GEN NEXT

It’s about the future; their opportunities and their potential. It’s about you, now; expanding your knowledge and shaping what’s going on around and after you.

Think forward. Lead now.

“I am investing my time in my own future. When we are free and have to start rebuilding from out of the ruins, I want

to see the world reborn as fast as possible. If there is, then, some working capital in the right hands--in the hands of

our best, our most productive men--it will save years for the rest of us and, incidentally, centuries for the history of the

country.” --Atlas Shrugged

Membership Progress

A few years ago, Gen Next was just a handful of friends

united by their concern with trends that didn’t seem to

bode well for future generations. The world around them

was changing rapidly without the talent of our best and

brightest helping shape the future. They felt disconnected,

and weren’t satisfied being on the sidelines. They realized

that to be influential, they had to attract other successful

and driven individuals to learn about and get engaged on

these issues.

They did just that. In a matter of a few years Gen Next has

grown from a handful of individuals with an idea to more

than 160 Members nationally. At the start of 2012 Gen

Next welcomed 50 New Members –and had a retention

rate of more than 93%.

Our Members intensify and deepen the pursuit of our

overall mission, as our ability to be consequential is directly

driven by the growth and commitment of our Members.

Organizational Snapshot

Similar to most businesses, we’re building to last. We spent a substantial portion of 2011 building operational capacity:

focusing on functions and structures; streamlining budget controls and the program model; implementing systems

and processes that enrich the Member experience; creating execution curriculum and implementing performance

management; and more. In 2012, we look forward to growing Membership in existing and new markets and improving the

way in which GN and GN Members power our impact through our network, Gen Equity, and the Gen Next Foundation.

ONLY IN GEN NEXT

Membership in Gen Next is a truly valuable and meaningful

experience. Our Members have their own individual stories to

tell about Gen Next. Behind each account is a common thread:

Members who are curious, passionate, and successful enjoy

experiences in the context of a big vision for the future.

For many, membership has been invaluable. Affording them

unprecedented access to some of the most consequential

thought leaders and decision makers. For some, it’s an

opportunity to learn about and engage in critical issues

facing future generations and build lasting relationships with

other Members – iron sharpens iron. And for others it’s an

opportunity to expand life’s experiences and demonstrate a

level of leadership in a way they never imagined.

The tour of Fort Huachuca was amazing. It offered unprecedented access to some of the Army’s most guarded technologies

pertaining to MI (military intelligence). We were briefed by both civilian and military leadership on the newest training

techniques and leading edge battlefield information systems that are just now being deployed down range. I rest easier now

that I have intimate knowledge of our MI resources and capabilities.

- Chris Deutsch – GNAZ

On the couple’s trip to Napa I had the opportunity to experience cult wineries such as Bryant, Araujo, and Ovid. Off

limits to the public and coveted by many wine aficionados, we toured the vineyards with the winemakers and tasted

wines not yet for sale. Aside from the wine, the trip was an amazing opportunity to build friendships with Members

from other regions. The experiences were definitely unlike any trip I have been on.

- Anthony Nanula – GNSD

The Russian experience was a 15 on a scale of 1 to 10. From Moscow to St. Petersburg, we were immersed in both

well-storied Russian history as well as history in the making as the current political shockwaves lit up. You could not

ask for more: meetings with high level government officials, successful Russian businessmen and women, interesting

Americans operating in Russia, the U.S. Embassy personnel on the front lines of a very complicated relationship with a

country with one foot in the past and an uncertain future. Who could forget the Karaoke in a private restaurant with a

Russian oligarch, backed by his personal band? Yes, we had it all.

18 Gen Next Impact - Venture Philanthropy

A Case Study: Combat Violent ExtremismThe Gen Next Foundation (GNF) and Gen Next Members

participated in a project spearheaded by Member Jared

Cohen, Director of Google Ideas, on a project that united

former violent extremists, survivors of violent extremism,

NGOs, and private sector executives to learn how to

use technology as a tool to combat extremism and

prevent young people from committing violence. The

Summit Against Violent Extremism (SAVE), launched

in Dublin, Ireland in 2011, was the first time violent

groups were brought together in one place to explore

the commonalities and differences in the causes of

extremism across different cultural contexts.

Gen Next Members, with specialties ranging from

national security and public policy to digital and social

media, attended the conference to add perspective. The

Gen Next Foundation gave the “Innovation in Impact“

award for the team who implemented the best idea post

conference. Edelman Public Affairs, Google, and eBoost

Consulting also awarded winning ideas. SAVE was

covered by national and international media, including the

Washington Post, Financial Times Magazine, New York

Times, and more.

As an outgrowth of the summit, the Gen Next

Foundation worked with Google Ideas and the Institute

for Strategic Dialogue in London to launch AVE,

AgainstViolentExtremism.org, a virtual community that

empowers former violent extremists, survivors of violent

extremism, NGOs, and business leaders to share ideas,

foster new collaborations, and speak to the world on the

solutions to violent extremism. Nothing exists like it.

GEN NEXT IMPACTGen Equity PACS

We won’t get the world we want by simply voting for it. By engaging our Members in the political process, we provide

another platform to have an impact. Gen Next Members make up the committee-run entity, entrusting and empowering

Gen Equity PACs of Gen Next to find and support political leaders and policies that demonstrate political courage and

commitment to forward-looking solutions. We have successfully helped impact candidates and initiatives giving us a

proven track record. (Partial list):

GEN NEXT IMPACTGen Next Foundation

Started by Gen Next Members, the Gen Next Foundation (GNF)

embraces new thinking on unresolved problems through applying

untested solutions, private sector and entrepreneurial methodologies

to generational challenges and by combining unique hybrids of for-

profit and non-profit business models. With the help of our Members,

we develop innovative and high-impact solutions to overcome these

issues. We draw on a diversified pool of resources and ideas from our

far-reaching and dynamic network of organizations, people, and other

centers of power to assist us in the pursuit of our mission. We have

a responsibility to help future generations succeed in inheriting a

competitive, free, and prosperous world.

At our very early stage, GNF and Members of GN worked with

and supported a number of compelling ventures and think tanks,

including the American Enterprise Institute, Washington Policy Center,

BASIS Schools, Goldwater Institute, the Federalist Society project

with Kauffman Foundation, Full Court Peace’s work to de-militarize

basketball courts in Ciudad Juarez, Just Like My Child, Institute for

Strategic Dialogue based in London, Quilliam Foundation, Google

Ideas, and more.

2012 Election This year we will see competitive races across the country

not seen for decades—not to mention a presidential

election. The Gen Equity strategy focuses on talent,

impact, and the future. Our approach works on electing

and supporting political leaders who have political

courage, forward looking policy priorities that will make

us freer and more competative, and will raise influence

beyond this election.

We are focusing on:

1. Electing new talent to the U.S. Senate

2. Defending our friends in the U.S. Congress

3. Remaining opportunistic in statewide opportunities

4. Amplifying the involvement of our Members active in the presidential campaigns
