Motivation/Background Building Organize students into cross ability groups. Ask students how they obtain bus directions. Tell students that they are going to 1) use their smartphones to get bus directions and 2) use the Metro website. Ask students if they know the name of the Metro website. Write the acronym WMATA on the board. Ask students if they know what the letters WMATA mean. Write Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Ask for a volunteer to explain why the abbreviation is WMATA. Explain that the abbreviation is derived by using the first letter of each word. Explain that even though students may not use the WMATA website on their phones, it’s important to understand how to navigate a website and how to ask for and give information about bus directions. Explain that first we’re going to study some transportation vocabulary to make it easier to understand bus directions. Presentation / Practice (Vocabulary) Handout 1 (Side A and B) is a compilation of most of the vocabulary words that students will encounter on the WMATA website. This handout includes definitions and a question-answer activity. Distribute this handout to students and explain that this is a double-sided paper with Side A and B marked in the upper right corner. Ask students to study the 12 words and their definitions. Poll for questions. Have students ask each other the question on the top of the page: What does _________ mean? Ask students to look at the NUMBERS section. Because the “th” sound is often challenging for students, give students an alternative option for reading aloud decimals (e.g. “zero, point, number” to express the decimal). Explain that 0.1 is stated “zero, point, one”. Explain that the other way to say it is, “one tenth.” Explain that 0.2 is stated “zero, point, two.” Or “two tenths.” Have students practice the A / B dialogues both ways: "zero, point, number, " and using the ordinal numbers. Instruct students to practice each dialogue twice: Each student should read A once and B once-- so that both partners have equal practice.

Refer to the NUMBERS section for an explanation of when to use “point,” “dot,” “period.” Write www.wmata.com on the board again. Tell students that we’ll use this website later. Explain that when we read a website out loud, we pronounce the small dot mark as, “dot”. Model this by reading the website letter by letter emphasizing the two “dots.” Explain that some websites can be pronounced as a word and for others each letter of the website needs to be pronounced. To check comprehension, ask students to read aloud the www.wmata.com website to a partner. Give students an example of a website that should be read as a word instead of letter by letter (e.g. www.reepworld.org). Ask students if it’s better to pronounce this as a word or if it’s better to spell out each letter. Model this by reading aloud the website. Instruct students to read aloud the website with a partner. Remind students to say, "dot." Finally, write the Arlington Public Schools website, www.apsva.us on the board. Ask students if they recognize this website. Explain that this is the website for Arlington Public Schools. Ask students if it’s better to pronounce this as a word or to spell out each letter. Model this by reading aloud the website. Instruct students to read this website aloud to a partner. Remind students to say, "dot." Build on students’ background knowledge by writing one or two sentences on the board. Ask students for the name of the mark that goes at the end of the sentence. Explain that you say “period” to describe this mark. Review when to use “point, dot, and period.”

For the ABBREVIATIONS section of the worksheet, take students step by step through the instructions. Instruct students to practice the dialogues on the worksheet and then check comprehension. Application and Evaluation (Vocabulary) Handout 2 Side A and B Handout 2 Side A includes a screen shot of WMATA generated bus directions. Above certain words and abbreviations, there is a circle in which students will fill in a number. On the right side, there is a list of imperative sentences that ask students to match definitions by placing a number in the circle above the word or abbreviation on the left side of the page with the corresponding definition. Handout 2 Side B has dialogue practice. Give students Handout 2 Side A and display a copy onto the board. Direct students’ attention to the left side of the handout. Ask students to take a minute or two and read the left side of the handout. Ask student to explain what they see on the left side of the page. Explain that once students start using the WMATA website on the smartphones, this is an example of the what they'll see. Demonstrate that the left side it divided into Section 1 and Section 2. Direct students to the right side of the Handout 2 Side A. Ask students to read the instructions. Have students repeat the instructions after you. Poll for questions about the instructions. Ask students to complete Number 1. Walk around the room to monitor progress. Demonstrate on the board how to complete the sheet. The answers for Section 1 (on the right side) are found in Section 1 (on the left side). Monitor progress and answer questions. Ask students to check partner’s progress and help if needed. Once students are finished, write answers on the board. Application and Evaluation (Abbreviations) Handout 3 asks students to write out abbreviations. Explain that students will practice writing abbreviations. Tell students that they will each receive a worksheet, but that they should help one another and correct each other's paper when finished. Distribute Handout 3. Ask students to begin. Circulate and monitor for questions. Once most students are finished, write answers on board and review. Ask students to check their work. Presentation Handout 2 Side B contains WMATA generated bus directions on the left side. It's the same WMATA information as Side A. On the right side are dialogues that ask and answers questions about the information on the left side. There are also arrows from the dialogues that direct students’ attention to relevant parts of the WMATA generated information. Display Handout 2 Side B on the board to use as reference. Tell students that the left side of the handout is the same as Side A. Explain that students will practice dialogues about the bus directions. Ask students to take two minutes to read the dialogues silently. Tell students that as they read each line, they should follow the arrows to the left side of the sheet so they can understand the relationship between the information in the lines of dialogue and the bus instructions on the left side of the handout. Circulate and ask if there are questions as students read. Once students have read the dialogue displayed on the board, direct students’ attention to Number 1 on the right side. Ask students to repeat after you as you model speaking the dialogue. Ask students why there is an arrow on number one and scan for a volunteer to answer. You might point out that the word, "from" usually indicates the origin of a trip and that the word appears in the question, "Where am I leaving from?"

Read each line of dialogue and have students repeat. Poll for questions after every two or three sets of dialogue. Point out that the arrows are showing the relationship between the dialogue and the left side. Remind students that the left side of the sheet is what they will see when they start using their phones. Once students have completed the pronunciation practice, students should practice the dialogue with a partner two times. Each student should read A once and B once. Walk around and assess for questions. Practice 1 Handout 4 provides writing practice. Students should complete dialogues using WMATA generated bus directions from Handout 2. Students will continue to work with a partner. Distribute Handout 4 to each student. Display a copy on the board. Point out that this handout is like Handout 2, but it doesn’t have arrows and it has incomplete dialogues so that students can practice writing. Explain that students should try to complete this paper without looking at Handout 2. If students have difficulty, they can refer to Handout 2. Review answers to the first two incomplete dialogues as a class and check for questions. Have student complete remainder of the dialogues. Tell students to correct their partner’s sheet once both are finished. Students should ask their partner or teacher for help if needed. Once most or all students are finished, review answers on the board. For each dialogue, rotate around the room so that different students give answers. Practice 2 Handout 5 (Side A and B) provides practice of dialogue writing using WMATA generated bus directions which look similar but include different content from Handout 4. On Side A, students need to fill-in-the-blanks on the right side with information from the left side. Side B has arrows to direct students’ attention to the relevant sections of the WMATA bus instructions. Handout 6 contains the correct answers for Handout 5 and 1 copy can be given to each pair if needed. You may choose not to use this and simply correct the answers together as a class on the board, or you can ask students to correct their own handout using Handout 6. Give students Handout 5. Explain that it is double sided. Draw students’ attention to Side A and B. Explain that the sides are the same except that Side B contains arrows and this helps to complete the form. Tell students that Side A is a little more difficult than Side B and that they can choose which side to complete or they can complete both sides if they prefer. Remind students to ask their partners or teacher questions if needed. When finished, students correct each other's paper. Presentation 2 Handout 7 Side A contains a step by step guide for how to generate WMATA bus directions using a smartphone. Side B shows a screenshot of what should have been generated if the steps on Side A have been followed correctly. Side B lists yes/no questions that guide the student to compare the information generated on their smartphones with the screen shot. Explain that students will now work in pairs and use their smartphones. One partner must have a smartphone with a working internet connection. Explain that if both students have smartphones, they should use one at a time so that they work together. Display Handout 7 Side A on board. Give students one handout per pair. Review the trip details. Point to the “Work together…” box on Handout 7 Side A. Ask students to proceed step by step through Side A. Circulate through the room to answer questions. Once students are finished Side A, display Side B on the board. Ask students what they see on Side B. Discuss. Explain that Side B is what should appear on their phone. Ask students to compare their phone with Side B and complete the questions on the right side of Side B. Before students begin, point out the IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS on the bottom part of Side B.

Tell students to take a minute and read the IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS. Poll for understanding. Students should begin work on Side B. Circulate through the room answering questions. Tell students that once they've successfully input the data and answered YES to questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 to raise their hands. They will be given another handout that they can use with the other cell phone. Or, if the pair has only one phone, one student can be the primary user and the other can assist. Practice 3 Handout 8 is a dialogue completion writing practice for the bus directions generated on Handout 7. Once students have finished Handout 7, give pairs Handout 8. Instruct students to raise their hands once they are finished. When students finish, they can check a partner’s paper using Handout 7. In pairs, students should practice the dialogue twice. Each student should read A once and B once. Application and Evaluation Handout 9 (Side A and B) includes details for two different bus trips and questions and answers. Handout 10 shows WMATA generated results for the two bus trips listed on Handout 9. Handout 11 Side A and B includes the WMATA generated results for Handout 9 Side A and B. Handout 9 asks students to input origin, destination, date and time into a smartphone for two different bus trips. Students should work together and enter the bus trip information for Side A first. Once students think they've done so correctly and before they proceed with completing the dialogues, students must check the information their phone has generated against Handout 10. Handout 10 is single sided, but divided into two halves. The left half contains the correct WMATA generated result for Side A of Handout 9. The right half contains the same for Side B of Handout 9. Once students have reached the correct result, they can use the information on their phones to complete the dialogues in Handout 9. Handout 11 can be used as an answer key for Handout 9 Side A and B. Explain to students that they will now use their smartphones to search for bus directions on the WMATA website. Remind students to work together on one phone at a time if both students have a smartphone. If only one student has a smartphone, encourage students to share. Distribute one copy (per pair) of Handout 9. Direct students to work on Side A. Ask students to read the information above the questions. Remind students that they can refer to Handout 7 if they need a reminder as to how to begin. Point out that once students arrive at the WMATA website, they will need to input the information found under "trip details" on Handout 9. Direct students’ attention to the box on the upper right of the page. Read the information in the box out loud and ask students to repeat. Check for comprehension. Explain to students that once their smartphones have generated what they believe are the correct bus directions, they must request Handout 10 to check the information generated on their smartphones. If students don't have matching information, they must input the information again until their smartphones generate the same results as Handout 10. Emphasize that once students have checked this, they can complete Handout 9. Suggest that students turn over Handout 10 so that they can't copy directly from it. Once students are finished Handout 9, they should request Handout 11 to check their written answers. Extension Activities for the Classroom and Beyond Computer Lab Activity: Handout 12 asks student to first write their home address on the handout which students will use later. The handout has a list of 5 addresses of local businesses in the local area. It asks students to Google the address to identify and write the name of the business located at that address. It then asks students to go to the WMATA website on the computer to find bus directions from their home address to each of the 5 address and answer 4 questions (A through D) on a separate sheet of paper for

each trip. This activity reinforces the procedures from the previous activities. After this activity, students compare the different bus directions with each other. Modified Jigsaw Activity: Handouts 13,14, and 15 Students are divided into cross ability pairs and pairs are organized into three groups with each group containing an equal number of pairs or as close to equal as possible. There are three different handouts that contain information about a different trip. The first steps are for each pair to study their handout, complete the dialogues, practice speaking the dialogues with each other to become experts on their trip. Once the pairs of all three groups are experts in their respective trips, give students conversation grids. Students will interview students from the two other groups and write the answers obtained from the other students in the appropriate boxes of the conversation grid. The conversation grid has three columns, one for each of the three trips. Students will need to interview one person, but not their partner. Write three column headers on the board: Trip One, Trip Two, Trip Three Under each column header, write the names of students assigned to that group. Try to have an equal number of pairs under each column. Hand out post it notes to students and have students write, TRIP ONE, TRIP TWO, OR TRIP THREE on their post it notes depending on the column under which they find their name. Distribute Handouts 13,14,15 for Trip 1, Trip 2, and Trip 3 respectively to each student assigned to each of the three groups. Point out the instructions at the top of the sheet. Answer any questions students may have and let students begin. Circulate and answer questions. Once students have completed this activity, distribute Handout 16, the Interview Grid. Say each question and ask students to repeat. Make clear that one of the interviews will be with a person who completed the same trip that he or she has completed, but not a partner. Emphasize that students can interview whoever is available and complete that portion of the grid. It’s not necessary to start with Trip 1. Explain that students should wear their post it notes so other students can see which trip they studied. Remind students that the student answering questions will read Part B of the dialogue. Students should correct the dialogues once they’re finished before moving on to another interview. Circulate and answer questions.
