www.redmond-reporter.com [6] April 22, 2011 W ith the rising costs of modern medicine, many look for ways to improve their health and em- power their bodies to fight disease and aging through natural alternatives. One of these natural alternatives is using essential oils. Essential oils, such as frankincense and myrrh, were mankind’s first medicine. Today, many are finding wellness using some of the same essential oils. For example, one can stop or shorten the life of a cold with oregano oil, ease a headache with lavender oil, or treat an infection with melaleuca (tea tree) oil. Also, eucalyp- tus oil activates the red-blood cells and in- creases the supply of oxygen to the body, and its anti- septic properties render it useful in treating colds and wounds. Essential oils are the regenerating, oxygenat- ing, and immune defense properties of plants. ey are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the skin. ey are lipid-soluble and are capable of penetrating cell walls. ey contain oxygen molecules which help to transport nutrients to the starving human cells. ey can stimulate the immune system, provide power- ful antioxidants, prevent fungus, and prevent oxidation. eir therapeutic action is usually due to the natu- rally occurring chemicals found within them. e way these chemicals inter- act with each other gives an essential oil its unique quality and its healing properties. Using essential oils for holistic health is oſten referred to as aromatherapy. However, inhaling the aroma of oils is only one of several ways to tap into the power of essential oils. ere are more than 1,000 essential oils throughout the world. Only about 100 are commonly used. So, how does one know what oil to use for what ailment and how does one learn how to best use the oils for their particular ailment or need? ere are several books available on aromatherapy or one can take a class.
