Sparks Around the Fire
On Wednesdays during Lent, everyone is invited to share a simple meal of soup, salad and bread and be reminded
of a common journey through Lent. Dinners take place at 6:00 PM in Endter Hall with a
Lenten service to follow at 7 PM.
Volunteers are needed to bring pots of homemade soup, salad and loaves of bread or rolls to share with others. It is a good opportunity to get to know other
members of the church.
Dear Friends: Remember that Vitality study we took last year? We’ll we finally got the results and met with a representative from the Synod to explain the results to us. The first set of questions tried to measure our relationship with God. Of all the ELCA churches that have taken this study in the Pacifica Synod, we had the highest ranking. You indicated that you see God’s presence in our world today-you connect to God through worship and study.
You indicated you feel joyful in worship, and the church is making a difference in the world through the many ministries that are conducted here. We connect well with our community through The Lord’s Pantry, Real Help, SHIP, summer swim program, VBS, community grief group. There is room for growth in connecting with our community on issues that are raised by the community and not just the church. We are not well connected to our city council, local schools, or other organizations that serve the people of Garden Grove. We connect well with one another. There is a men’s group, 4 women’s circles, multiple Bible studies, book studies, dinners for 8, and other fellowship opportunities. There is a good spirit among the members of the church. Probably the greatest room for growth is our view toward the future. There is concern over what will happen when I retire, there is concern about the changing neighborhood and how to reach the new ethnic communities around us, and there is concern about the overall direction of Christianity in California and this country. The study divided congregations into one of six quadrants. The top 3 quadrants were concerned with the vitality of the congregation. The bottom 3 quadrants were concerned with the sustainability of the congregation. We were ranked as a strong and vital congregation, but we were just outside the top quadrant of sustainability. If a congregation has trouble feeling positive about the future, it is less likely to invest in ministry that prepares it for the future. So the good news is that we are a vital positive congregation that connects well with God, one another, and to our community. The challenge for this congregation is to look to the future and have the energy to invest in future programs and outreach. In the months ahead, the church council will be working through a workbook, and then involving the congregation in ways to continue the good things we do, and prepare for our future together. In Christ,
Pastor Brian

Reflections from the Intern Pastor by Pastor Jennifer Garcia
What does it take to become an ELCA pastor or deacon*?
Our Redeemer has done a lot of faithful ministry to pastoral interns like myself over the years, so you have seen what goes on during an internship year. Do you know what else happens between the time I realized God was calling me to be a pastor and when I will be ordained?
Entrance: There are 3 major steps in what is called the “candidacy process”: entrance, endorsement, and approval. Entrance is the first step that I started when I realized God was calling me to be a pastor and started a conversation with people at the Synod Office (our regional administrative office). The process varies slightly by Synod, but for me it required an initial interview with a retired pastor, an application and essay, a psychological evaluation, and an entrance interview with my candidacy committee (a panel that follows me through my candidacy journey). I completed this step before going to seminary (the graduate school portion of becoming a pastor). Endorsement: The next step of candidacy is endorsement, which happens after Clinical Pastoral Education (also known as CPE, which is a 400-hour internship as a chaplain) and before internship. My CPE experience was as a chaplain at PIH Health Hospital in Whittier the summer after my first year of seminary. Endorsement involved another essay and an interview with two Synod representatives at the beginning of my second year of seminary. Approval: I am currently working toward this step of candidacy. This step happens after I have completed enough of my internship that my candidacy committee can tell I am ready to be a pastor. They will be reviewing my work in seminary and my evaluations from CPE and internship. I have been working on another essay for the past couple months, and I will have my final interview with my candidacy committee at the end of July. I would love your prayers as I work toward this step. Assignment: Our bishops meet together to assign candidates to Synods so we can start interviewing with congregations for a first call. Ordination: Once a congregation calls a candidate as their pastor, the candidate works with the Synod to plan ordination and installation services. This is the step where I will officially be a pastor and will make vows to care for God’s people and be a faithful leader in the church. I attended the ordination of one of my friends from seminary a few weeks ago, and it was a beautiful experience. I can’t wait to invite you all to mine.
*This article is primarily about my own journey through this process toward pastoral ministry, but it is a very similar journey for deacons.

Welcome to our new office manager, Rebecca G. Terrones. Rebecca started on January 27th and jumped right in. Rebecca is getting her master’s degree in Social Work from California State University in Long Beach. She has a degree in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine. She is engaged and getting married in April! Her free time is filled with enjoying spending time with her four pets, playing ukulele, crafting, listening to podcasts and learning new skills (we are keeping her busy learning all kinds of skills!). Rebecca has a diverse work background ranging from office administration to respite caregiving and is very excited to be here (and we are excited to have her!). Rebecca has already made so many positive improvements at Our Redeemer. As many have noticed our font size has increased and we can read the bulletin. She has also instituted many new procedures to make us more efficient and accountable.
Stop by the office and meet her!
