Dear Friends: “Growing as stewards of God’s gifts” is our stewardship theme this year. We plan on addressing stewardship issues in 3 different ways this year. The first is our annual stewardship drive to secure

commitments for 2014. As an aging congregation, it falls on the rest of the congregation to grow in giving to sustain our ministries, staff, and facilities. Each year 8-12 members are going on to their eternal reward. With each death is a loss of support for our ministry. To continue providing quality ministry we need new members to join in the support of the congregation, existing members to continue their level of giving, and other members to continue to grow toward the goal of a 10% tithe. Every small amount makes a difference, but all of us working together will allow us to grow. Please make sure you have returned your commitment card so the church council can responsibly plan for next year’s budget. I hope that everyone will consider an increase in giving. Even $1 a week by every giving member would represent more than a $10,000 increase in giving: just $1 a week. The second emphasis on stewardship is our endowment fund. Studies show that the average inheritance is spent within 6 months. We will be educating and encouraging members to remember the church in your estate planning. By setting aside 10% of your estate for the work of the church, you can guarantee that a portion of your wealth will be set aside to continue providing ministry for years to come. No matter what your family members may decide to do with their inheritance, a gift given to the church is guaranteed to be set aside for the future support of mission work. You can make a huge difference through a gift of your estate. You also might be pleasantly surprised that there are many gifts that can be given that provide tax benefits now and allow you to give a gift later. We will be hosting seminars in the coming year, please consider attending one of them and finding out how you can grow as a steward of God’s gifts to you.

The third emphasis on stewardship is a solar power system for the church. The church council is exploring the feasibility of installing a solar power system on the roofs of the church. With tax incentives by the state, we would actually pay for a system over 10 years and begin making savings in our budget the very first year. Edison is planning increases of 8% per year over the next 5 years. Installing a system this year could literally save the congregation over $600,000 over the next 25 years and it would reduce CO2 emissions by producing clean energy and reducing our reliance on coal generated electricity. This is not only a wise financial investment, it is good stewardship of our creation. I’m excited about the prospects of making huge differences through our stewardship efforts in the coming year. In Christ,

Pastor BrianPastor BrianPastor BrianPastor Brian New Member Class We will host a new member orientation on Monday, November 10 from 7-9 p.m. During the evening we will talk about the Lutheran faith, the ministry of Our Redeemer, and get to know one another. If you are interested in becoming a member or of learning more about the Lutheran faith, call the church office to let us know you will be attending.

Confirmation: Sunday November 2 Matthew Wood, Travon Thomas and Colin Prothero will be confirmed on Sunday, November 2. They have completed a two year study of the Lutheran faith, they have demonstrated their understanding of the basic aspects of the Christian faith, and they will share their faith in both worship services on November 2nd. There will be a reception for them in between the services on the patio. Matthew Wood and his sister Olivia will also be baptized at the 8:30a.m. service that morning.

Online giving is available for our members now, and it can be accessed from our

church website at www.orcgg.org. On the church homepage at the le side is a green

buon labeled “Online Giving.” This will take you to a secure webpage (recognizable to

you by Our Redeemer’s name at the top) at which you are invited to create your online

profile (on the right side of the screen) and set up details of how you wish to give your

offering. This can be done automa(cally on a weekly, monthly or annual basis.

Full repor(ng of your online giving is available to you from your login, so keeping track of your dona(ons to

your church will be easy and efficient. We can also use our online giving webpage to give to special causes,

such as a fund-raising campaign for a specific need (like solar panels).

Your church sincerely hopes that you will find the online giving webpage makes your life simpler, as

you can now give your offering online from your own home. The accoun(ng process will be more efficient

and easier for the volunteer counters, too.

If you are happy with the way you already give and would like to con(nue to write a weekly or

monthly check, or already have an automa(c withdrawal set up with your bank, then that’s fine, too.

Online giving is there for you if you’d like to use it, but you don’t have to.

We expect there to be some ques(ons in the beginning months of using online giving, and we

will answer all your ques(ons as quickly as we can! Just call the church office and ask to speak to

Lynne Prechel. I’ll help you figure out this new way of giving!

Grace and peace,

LynneLynneLynneLynne

“Online Giving now available” by Lynne Prechel, Associate in Ministry

I heard an old man speak once, someone who had been sober for fifty years, a very prominent doctor. He said that he’d finally figured out a few years ago that his profound sense of control, in the world and over his life, is another addiction and a total illusion. He said that when he sees little kids sitting in the back seat of cars, in those car seats that have steering wheels, with grim ex-pressions of concentration on their faces, clearly convinced that their efforts are causing the car to do whatever it is doing, he thinks of himself and his relationship with God: God who drives along silently, gently amused, in the real driver's seat. —Anne Lamott, Operang Instrucons

GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL

Wow! What fun we had in October. Starng the month, we got to play with shapes and enjoyed painng, stamping

and prinng… then the Fire Department came to the rescue. Garden Grove, Staon 2 came to visit with a “show and tell” as we

learned first hand about Fire Fighters, playing with matches, Stop, Drop and Roll and to see their Big Fire Engine.... it was very

excing. OCFA Fire Fighters from Staon 62 in Buena Park invited our big kids to see behind the scenes and where they live and

work… they were wonderful to all our children. We got to see a fire fighter dress up in their turn-outs, and check out their Fire

Engine too (It’s BIG) We even got to see them squirt their water… way in the air, into the cemetery!!!

We were closed on Friday, October 17th so that the teachers could a8end a very interesng conference on

Developmental Disabilies.

Then we had lots of fun ge:ng ready for Halloween. We went to the Pumpkin Patch, where they grow the pumpkins

and pick them right out of the field — everyone got to bring home a pumpkin, it was so much fun. We learned about bats and

caves and had lots of fun with some pumpkin science and spiders too. Then we got to dress up in costume and go ‘Trick or

Treang’ at school.

Coming up in November we will be doing lots of excing things too! We will be learning about Fall and ge:ng ready

for Thanksgiving as we enjoy a fun lesson about the Nave American Indians and Pilgrims as well as being thankful for some

special people in our lives. The children will be making many beauful cra?s; learning about the season of change… we so love

all the colors it brings, re-create a real (fun) Nave American Indian Pow-Wow as well as Celebrang our 3rd Annual

Grandparents/Loved Ones Day. The children will be inving someone special in their life to come to school with them on

Monday, Nov 24th. We will have a special me in Church with Pastor Brian and Miss Sharon, and they will sing; a recepon will

follow.

The school will be closed Tuesday, November 11 for Veteran’s Day as well as November 26—28 for the Thanksgiving

Holiday. .. It will be Christmas before you know it!

"I'll get to that...someday."

How many of you have said it just this month, or last week, or

even today? From all accounts, “someday” will be a great day! That's

the day we'll make that phone call to an old friend, plan that trip,

take that course, try that new haircut, read that book, send that

get-well card, learn CPR, enroll in a self-defense class...and so on.

We want to do so much, but it seems like there isn't ever enough

(me. I'm guilty of it, too - who isn't?

It's not a new message for us: life is short, and we should

enjoy it while we can. It's easy to say that. It's much harder to do it,

isn't it? I'd like to try, though, and I'm invi(ng you to join me.

A first step could be to make a list of things we want to do.

It's okay to start with generali(es, like: eat more healthily & exercise

more. But to make things more possible, get more specific in your

list, like: eat more vegetables & walk more. That’s more specific.

Then get even more specific s(ll, such as: keep cut up vegetables in

‘fridge for snacking & take a fieen-minute walk everyday. Do you

see what I mean? More specificity equals a greater chance of

actually comple(ng the task. There’s less chance of squirming out of

it if it’s very clear what to do.

So make your list. Aer puJng down all that comes to mind

over a few days or a week, take a good look at your list. Is there a

way to bring any of the air castles down to earth, or combine some

items? Maybe "catch up with old friends" could mean that you all

sign up for a self-defense (or kniJng, or origami, or cooking) class

together, do scrapbooking together once a month, or plan a monthly

picnic in a local park. For faraway friends or family, schedule a

virtual get-together by Skype or FaceTime. It could become a weekly

or monthly event to catch on loved ones’ lives in this way.

Maybe we won't get very far down our lists - and maybe

(with any luck) our lists will keep growing, as we acknowledge our

dreams, and as we grow more aware of what we really want from

our lives. Maybe items don't even get crossed off, but just the

making of the lists may cause us to pay aenon to our hearelt

dreams and the lile joys of everyday. And - perhaps this (me next

year, we'll have made some great memories.

Calling all Confirmation students:

Soon, thanksgiving will be here! We will begin the thanksgiving meal with prayer. When we begin serving the thanksgiving meal, we will have passed the food in a manner that tried to make certain our guests were served first. When the meal has ended and cleanup has begun, we will begin packaging up the leftovers. We divide up the packages so that we can give some to each of our guests to take home with them. Our lifelong stewardship is much like the thanksgiving meal. We make certain that the first fruits are given to God before satisfying our own needs. At the end of our life, there will be leftover gifts from God which we no longer need as we enter into His Kingdom. Before our departure, we package those gifts into a will or trust. We put names on the packages in the way of beneficiaries of financial assets. Was God present at your table during your lifetime? Is God’s name on one of the leftover packages? To help plan your leftover gifts through a will, trust or financial asset, contact our ELCA Gift Planner, Greg Shepherd at (909)910-6823 or [email protected]
