This is the hallowed hall of heroes… this Memorial Coliseum.
A living memorial to our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters,
our fathers and mothers, and our dear friends who served their God and their country
with the last full measure of devotion.
It is not so much a monument to the generosity of the living
as it is a testament to the sacrifice of the honored dead.
Before its magnificence we are not so proud as we are humble.
This is the day of formal rededication, 9 November 2002.
From this day on, this stone and mortar, this steel and wood, this thing material
becomes spiritual as well: the consecrated symbol in Allen County of its
citizens’ abiding faith in, and love for our native heroes and their righteous cause.

★ Elvis Presley played a number
of shows at the Memorial
Coliseum during his lifetime,
including the next to last
concert before his death
in 1977.
★ During the catastrophic
flood of 1982 which
put Fort Wayne on the
national map, the Memorial
Coliseum served as shelter
and command post for relief
efforts. Many volunteers
helped sandbagging efforts,
young people who helped
sandbag received free tickets
to hear Indiana’s own, John Mellencamp, then known
as Johnny Cougar.
★ President Harry S. Truman gave a speech at the
Memorial Coliseum in 1958, but he wasn’t the only
president to appear here — Richard Nixon spoke
in 1969, Gerald Ford in 1976 and Ronald
Reagan in 1978.
★ The biggest convention ever held at the
Memorial Coliseum was the 25th annual Wing
Ding meeting of the Gold Wing Road Riders
Association in July 2002, which pumped an
estimated $8 million into the local economy.
Growth and renewal
In the 1980s, a new convention hall was proposed as an
addition to the original arena. The idea was to increase
the floor space of the Memorial Coliseum, thereby making
it more marketable.
In May 1989, the
108,000 sq. ft.
Exposition Center was
built, adding flexible
space for trade shows,
as well as, several
smaller banquet-style
rooms.
In 2001, a major renovation was initiated to expand the
Memorial Coliseum Arena and modernize the facility to
keep pace with the times. As part of the project, the
Memorial Coliseum’s 1200-ton roof was slowly raised
41 feet, 10 inches — one of the largest projects of its type.
The renovated, state-of-the-art facility now holds nearly
13,000 with more comfortable seats, luxury suites, and
greater accessibility for guest with disabilities.
In the new century, the Memorial Coliseum continues to
serve the tri-state area as a focal point for family entertain-
ment, arts and culture, sports, and community gatherings.
It draws visitors from all over the Midwest, and has earned
its reputation as one of the most successful facilities in the
country. Today, the Memorial Coliseum stands at the heart
of life in northeast Indiana, a fitting tribute to our veterans
as a living memorial.
Oh beautiful for heroes proved…Oh beautiful for heroes proved…

The Exposition Center with 108,000 sq. ftof floor space was completed in 1989.
Ground breaking ceremonies on March 20, 2001 includedrelocating the 25,000 pound anchor from the World War IIbattleship USS Indiana.
The new rotunda entrance built in 1989 featuressculptures by artist Ann LaRose from Loveland, Colorado.
Raising the 1200-ton roof 41 feet,10 inches on August 2, 2002, tookjust under five hours.
