social satire and a psychological study of a new kind of protagonist, the urban social climber whose
success is based on his skill and ingenuity rather than privilege.
The cast features Conor Tansey, Jeremy Johnson,* Brian Linden* (2-time Innovative TheatreAward nominee), Peter Reznikoff* (Bway: Irena’s Vow, New York Shakespeare Festival: Richard
III ), Tara Schoch Frederickson (Metropolitan Opera, Classic Stage Company) Alison Burke, Philip

Growing up in Verrières, a small village near the French Alps during the reign of Charles X, 19 year
old Julien Sorel, the ambitious son of a poor, uneducated carpenter was schooled by a retired officer from Bonaparte’s army and taught perfect Latin by the town priest. Hated by his father and brothers for
his intellectual pretensions, Julien is fortuitously offered a position as tutor for the sons of the town
mayor, Monsieur de Renal who uses Julien to enhance his image among his rivals, chiefly theunscrupulous director of a local orphanage named Valenod. Complications ensue when M. de Renal’s
beautiful wife Louise becomes infatuated with Julien’s charm; yet he views her only as a member of
the hated aristocracy. He despises and rejects her—but will that change?
Deloss Brown’s first play, Heart of a Dog was produced at the McCarter Theatre before premiering atCSC Repertory in 1990. His 2007 play The Sheik inspired by Richard Steele’s 1703 comedy “The
Tender Husband” produced at the Medicine Show Theatre got rave reviews including one from the New York Times. Other plays include The Landlord’s Daughter produced as a reading at Manhattan
Theatre Club and Symphony Space, Reduced Voltage and Cleaning Solution; both produced at the
Direct Theatre, and Jonathan Wild , produced at the Houston Playwright’s Theatre. As a director he’sworked on numerous productions for companies including Riverside Shakespeare Company,
