The history of the town goes backto 1775 when of the fi rst known settlers in this community “sailor” hector mcneill received a land grant from king george the iii of england. He also purchased an adjoining track of land that had ben granted to george sizemore in 1767 the little stream that runs behind houses in scottish heights and the middle school is known as sizemore branch, these grants cover most of the present town includ-ing fl ora mcdonald college campus lands.
The mineral springs in the areea were known for their benifi cial quali-ties long before he town was formed. It became a mecca for many who benefi ted from the health
giving waters, the name of the town is derived from the rust colored sediment caused by the iron and suf-fur deposits in the water
Why is the water red?A folklore that is shared
by manygoes like this. An indian brave at sun-set returning from the days hunt, knelt to drink from the deep spring that bubbled from the sands
beneath the towering pines. He decided to rest awhile before returning to the lodge where a dark-eyed maiden waited, but his rival for the maidens hand, lurking in the forest, sent a death arrow and thee stricken warrior fell forward into the spring waters and sank from sight , only the bronze colored blanket fl ung across his sholder was left fl oating
on the surface. It is said that even today when the late afternoon sun throws its slanting rays through the trees, the dying light cathes the gleam of the blanket fl oating beneath the surface.
The deep wide pool that the indians drank and to which many years later many families seeking the health giving waters came to enjoy is gone. In itss place came pipes from which the waters still fl ow, a hotel was later built and many people came by train and carriage to visit the area for the health giving qualities of the water.
