TWA Parent Challenge!
Parent Involvement! T. Wingate Andrews High School is making a concerted effort to increase
parent involvement! Educational research has concluded that when parents are involved students have:
Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
Better school attendance
Increased motivation, higher level of self-esteem
Lower rates of suspension
Decreased use of drugs and alcohol
Fewer instances of violent behavior
In an effort to increase parent involvement, we are implementing a parent involvement pledge program. We have work that needs to be done.
What Is a Parent Involvement Pledge?
The Parent Involvement Pledge is a program in which parents commit to volunteering at least ten hours over the course of the school year to sup-port school initiatives.
The Challenge
Over the course of this school year, at least one TWA parent or family mem-ber per student is asked to commit ten (10) volunteer hours. Volunteer op-portunities exist at the school, at home, and in the community. The list on page 3 under Why Volunteer? explains the many activities which qualify.
Make Your Pledge
Completion of the Parent Involvement Pledge will make you a volunteer. Students who return a signed pledge on behalf of their parent( s) will be entered into a raffle for an IPOD shuffle. All parents who volunteer for at least three hours each grading period will be entered into a raffle for movie tickets and a restaurant gift card

TWA PRIDE
"Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction."
~John F. Kennedy
Dear T. Wingate Andrews Family,
t is hard to believe, but we are just about to complete the first semester of the 2012-2013 school
year! The end of the first semester grading period will be January 18, 2013. Parents, I encourage
you to sit down with your son or daughter and review their academic progress for the first half of
the school year. Now would be a good time to set personal and academic goals with your child as
you review their successes and any areas that need to be addressed on the report card. Grades are
a benchmark of a student’s academic progress but they do not tell the whole story about their abil-
ity and work habits. Be sure to acknowledge your child’s strengths, identify areas for additional
support, and encourage them to utilize the resources provided by the school to reinforce their ef-
forts in achieving academic success.
Our first semester EOC testing will begin Monday, January 14th. In an effort to maximize our stu-
dents’ success, we will continue EOC tutorials afterschool before exams begin, and on each exam
day. Please see the exam day tutorial schedule below and encourage your child to participate in
this valuable opportunity. Bus transportation will be available on each tutorial day.
Monday, January 14th: 2nd Block Tutorials following dismissal
Tuesday, January 15th: 3rd Block Tutorials following dismissal
Wednesday, January 16th: 4th Block Tutorials following dismissal
As always, parents, we need your support! Our combined efforts will help us reach our goals for
our students and our school. Remember, our goals for this school year are:
1) Increase our composite score to 70%.
2) Increase student attendance to 94%.
3) Make AMO (Annual Measurable Objectives).
Thank you for making T. Wingate Andrews the best place to learn! Go Red Raiders!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
When you volunteer at your children’s school you show your kids that you care about their education
and their school. It also sets the example for your children to follow. When your children observe you
helping out at school it gives them pride in you as a parent and will inspire them to help others. You
will feel good knowing that you have helped the students and the teachers. It gives you the opportunity
to learn about your child’s friends and backgrounds. This puts you in a better position to answer any
questions that your child may ask about diversity or economical differences. You are able to extend the
skills that you have to help out your school and students. Interestingly, you may acquire new skills
that may add to your career or even take you to a new career path. But above all this you get to know
more about your children and how they spend their time during school.
What Counts for Volunteer Hours?
At Home:
Ask your children to explain what they learned in school
Create a homework space in your home
Have a weekly family reading/math night
Purchase items to be used in the classroom
Help your child study for a test/quiz
Check your child’s agenda for assignments and notices
Visit the website and find out one new thing about Andrews HS
At School:
Chaperone at a dance/ field trip
Make a presentation in a classroom
Help organize volunteers
Mentor/tutor a student
Create bulletin boards
Help teachers on teacher’s workdays
Assist in the library
Welcome new families

Guilford County Council of PTA launched The Real Men Are F.B.I. Program in the 2011
– 2012 school year. The new program focuses on increasing male involvement in our
schools and local PTA units. This program promotes Fathers Being Involved in our
schools and is geared towards fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and any other
male figure in the community that supports education and student success.
Studies show that students perform better when both mothers and fathers are both
involved in the education of their children. Men and women think differently and bring
different perspectives and skills to school and PTA activities. School communities and
PTA’s thrive when both men and women participate. Yet men remain a largely un-
tapped resource. This program seeks to combat this phenomenon.
The GCC of PTAs urges more men to join T. Wingate Andrews as volunteers in any way
they feel the most comfortable. Increasing male involvement through the Real Men
Are FBI program at Andrews will have a significant impact on our students’ success.
For more information ways you can help, please contact
Chris Herndon or Darren Cason at [email protected]
Students that need help in math, science, history, English, and PSAT/SAT/ACT are encouraged to attend.
Parents please utilize this terrific program. If your child misses school they can makeup time and receive tutoring. It is a phe-nomenal way for our students to stay on track.
RED program days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
The program will run through May 30th 2013.
