As you purchase new products, it is important to properly dispose of your outdated items. The next time you upgrade your smart phone, iPad, or get the latest gaming system, explore your options for disposing of the old products.

Reduce your generation of e-waste through smart procurement and maintenance.

• Lease It — If you’re going to upgrade in a year anyway, why waste the money?

• Buy Green — Companies continue to make better devices and are more aware of their environmental impact. Research a product before you purchase it and support businesses that are doing their part.

• Donate/Reuse — Still functioning electronic equipment can be donated or sold to someone who can use it.

• Recycle — Electronic products should not be considered “waste.” They are a resource. Useful materials such as glass, copper, aluminium, plastic and other components can be extracted for reuse or recycling.

but are not considered electronic items.

Don’t throw away your television,

recycle it!

REUSE, DONATE OR RECYCLE

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, e-waste is the fastest growing segment of the municipal waste stream. Rapid advances in technology means cell phones, tablets and TVs become obsolete in 18 months or less.

It is estimated that only one-quarter of all e-waste is recycled, resulting in a waste of energy and materials, and posing serious environmental and health risks when not properly handled.

Reuse and Donating OptionsDonating used (but still operating) electronics for reuse extends the lives of valuable products and keeps them out of the waste stream for a longer period of time. Reuse, in addition to being an environmentally preferable alternative, also benefits society. By donating your used electronics, you allow schools, nonprofit organizations, and lower-income families to obtain equipment.

Not sure how to recycle your used or unwanted electronic equipment? Call Collier County Customer Service at (239) 252-2380. We ensure transportation of the equipment to an electronics recycling facility and make sure that no hazardous waste (e.g., mercury, cathode ray tubes, and lead) is placed in a landfill or sent overseas.

Collier County promotes the recycling of electronic equipment to conserve landfill space and preserve our environment.
