Scotty & Sinx could re ce ive but not trans m it. Fine on th e ground but w ith th e us ual in-fligh t e nvironm e nt th e ir trans m is s ions rate d crappy at be s t. Th e fie ld is righ t on your doors te p w ith s h e lte r to h arbour your aircraft from th e w e s t. Upon landing Pilch ie w as s till no w h e re to be s e e n. A ce ll call re s ulte d in a m e s s age le ft w ith Moth e r Goos e e xpre s s ing h e r conce rn. Minute s late r Pilch ie calle d back to inform us h e w as a couple of paddock s w e s t of us w ith a de ad m otor. A couple of McKe nz ie paddock s as w e found out can m e an s e ve ral k m 's . H ow e ve r follow ing h is bad luck Pilch ie h ad s k ilfully poppe d dow n in th e m iddle of a paddock , tie d h e r dow n, and w ith th e as s is tance of th e Subaru ligh ts found th e e nd of th e s trip, not to m e ntion a s e ction of s w am p, on foot.

As w e approach e d th e junction of th e Lindis and th e Ah uriri th e bre e z e droppe d aw ay allow ing ye t anoth e r s m ooth and com fortable pas s age into th e m as s ive Ah uriri Valle y. Afte r a partial tour around th e valle y w e re turne d to a s trip at th e e as te rn e nd of th e valle y. Dis cus s ion re volve d around a s m all pas s th at w ould provide a q uick pas s age back to Tw iz e l. Th is track took us a fe w m ile s s outh of Lak e O h au and provide d us w ith s om e s pe ctacular vie w s of th e s urrounding country. Th e pas s prove d to be a little lum py in place s but w e ll w orth th e journe y. Th e tim e s ave d by com ing via th is pas s put us back at th e s trip in Tw iz e l about 2.00pm w h ich prove d e xce lle nt tim ing for Ed & Pilch ie w h o h ad m ade it back alre ady. W ith Ed's PTige r e xh aus t re paire d a plan w as h atch e d to re trie ve Pilch ie s M irage w h ich re q uire d Sinx and I to give ae rial dire ction to th e ground cre w w ith th e obje ctive of finding th e e as ie s t pas s age to th e s trick e n Mirage . It could

be s aid th at ae rial m is dire ction w as th e w inne r of th e day and th at Pilch ie s ne w Toyota 4W D w as duly te s te d. Pack ing up th e M irage turne d out to be a ple as ant s urpris e in th e fact th at it all h appe ne d w ith re lative e as e . Ed as s is ting Pilch ie w ith th e drive out, Sinx and I re luctantly de cide d th at m ore aviation w as in orde r and roare d off in abs olute ly pe rfe ct conditions for anoth e r e xcurs ion around th e footh ills of Puk ak i Dow ns . Failing ligh t again h as te ne d th e re turn to bas e and w e cruis e d back to finis h ye t anoth e r am az ing day flying. W e h ad be e n aw ay about an h our and appe are d s om e w h at s urpris e d to s e e th e re s t of th e te am s till in th e paddock jus t s h ort of th e gate by th e cane l. Day 3Again th e alarm s ounde d at 6.00am and th e te am h ad de cide d to h e ad for h om e via Puk ak i and th e Te k apo cane l. A s trip oppos ite Saw don Station w as s e le cte d as a fue ling s top be fore atte m pting Burk e s Pas s . At jus t afte r 8.00am w e launch e d again into pe rfe ct conditions for th e firs t le g h om e . W ith Ed back in th e air w e cruis e d along th e e dge of Lak e Puk ak i and clim be d up to follow th e cane l pas t Mt Mary. It w as jus t s h ort of th e cane l th at Scotty m ade an uns ch e dule d arrival on a le s s th an de s irable track . W ith Moth e r Goos e circling, th e gos ling gath e re d to s urve y th e pligh t of our falle n buddy. Afte r s e ve ral pas s e s and e s tablis h ing Scotty w as ok w e s e arch e d for a h andy landing s pot. Jus t at th at m om e nt I glance d up to s e e Scotty roaring s k yw ard once again. In fact it w ould be fair to s ay th at from th e re to Saw don Station w e s aw th e unus ual s igh t of Scotty flying clos e to w h at w e be lie ve w as th e s tratos ph e re . Not a s igh t any of us h ad s e e n be fore , but all jok e s as ide h e dis playe d gre at s k ill in s aving th e Quick ie from w h at could h ave be e n a ve ry nas ty s ituation.

Our s top at Saw don Station re ve ale d th at Scotty h ad s uffe re d from pos s ible carb icing. Sinx on th e oth e r h and h ad be e n conducting a th orough ins pe ction of Trans Pow e rs h igh te ns ion line s and w as h appy to re port th at all w as in orde r. Again th e local farm e r and s om e trave lle rs turne d up at th e s trip to h e ar our s tory, w h ich lik e all good s torie s ne e de d to be told to all th at

w ould lis te n. Truth w as , one of th e m w ante d to te ll h is ow n s tory and jum pe d into Scotty's Quick ie for a ph oto babbling s om e bulls h it s tory about w h at h e w as going to te ll h is daugh te r. Afte r a ne rvous one and m ore of Sinx's junk food w e clim be d s te adily tow ards Burk e s Pas s . At 3000' w e talk e d to oth e r traffic in th e pas s be fore de s ce nding into turbule nt air on th e e as te rn s ide . Ed droppe d to th e de ck and took advantage of a de ce nt tail w ind. Scotty cros s e d th e valle y but lik e th e re s t of us w as not h aving a good tim e of it. H e couldn't h ave gue s s e d h ow s ucce s s ful it w as going to turn out at th at s tage . Afte r m uch planning and organis ing it all cam e toge th e r w ith pe ople and m ach ine s arriving on Th urs day 13th April, from as far aw ay as Tak ak a and Karam e a w ith m os t of th e oth e rs com ing from Rangiora. Th e trik e s w e re duly rigge d and park e d in a ve ry s h e lte re d location adjace nt to Bob and Ch ris tine 's h ous e . Th re e of th e m ach ine s w e re able to be accom m odate d in Bob's h angar. Se ve ral of th e pilots couldn't re s is t th e opportunity of a q uick fam iliaris ation fligh t around th e are a be fore dark on th e firs t e ve ning and afte r th at it w as into th e planning for th e firs t s e rious m is s ion for th e ne xt day (Good Friday). W ith th e w e ath e r look ing as th ough it w as going to be a crack e r, th e plan w as to h e ad off ove r th e H ok onui H ills to Rive rton on th e s outh coas t jus t w e s t of Inve rcargill.Good Friday 14th April Th e day s tarte d w ith a pe rfe ct m orning and th e n got be tte r. 10 trik e s , accom panie d by Jack de Re e pe r in h is Bantam , all as s e m ble d at Ale x Taylor's s trip s ituate d about a m ile from Bob and Ch ris tine 's . Afte r s cone s , te a, coffe e , and m uch dis cus s ion, at Ale x's h om e w e got unde r w ay, h e ading for Rive rton jus t afte r 1100 h ours . Our cours e took us s traigh t

ove r th e H ok onui H ills in a s outh w e s te rly dire ction for about 41 nm . W e all arrive d s afe ly jus t afte r m idday. Afte r a brie f orbit around Rive rton, our le ade r (Doug) lande d in a paddock adjace nt to th e be ach (tide w as in s o no be ach landings ). Conditions w e re about as good as you w ould find anyw h e re . No w ind, w arm and cle ar. Sm ooth flying all th e w ay apart from th e odd m inor lum p ove r th e H ok onui's . W e de parte d from Rive rton at about 1300 afte r Inve rcargill ATC de cline d our re q ue s t to fly pas t th e s outh

s ide of Bluff, due to incom ing traffic. W e th e n h e ade d w e s t around th e coas t th e n north pas t Tuatape re w h e re w e lande d in a paddock to plan th e ne xt le g th rough to Ce ntre Bus h . Sce ne ry and flying conditions w e re s till about as good as th e y com e . On Saturday afte rnoon I drove to W h ak atane to vis it Dad's cous in Don. Don is 79 and cam e back to th e s trip late r in th e day for a look and a ride . Corros ion can m anife s t its e lf in m any form s and it can be caus e d or pre cipitate d by m any m e ans but it is alw ays a ch e m ical or e le ctroch e m ical re action w h ich conve rts th e m e tal back to a m e tallic com pound.Mos t m e tals on an aircraft are e th e r an alloy of s te e l or alum inium ; th e s e are m ade up of various m e tals adde d to a bas e m e tal (iron or alum inium ). Th e alloying e le m e nts form grains w ith in th e m e tal w h ich w h e n e xpos e d to w ate r or oth e r e le ctrolyte s caus e s m all e le ctric curre nts to flow th rough th e m e tal.
