8 RECREATE® | UWA Kids Sports

A dynamic school holiday sport and recreation experience.

The UWA Kids Sports Holiday Program

is an action-packed school holiday

program based on group sport and

recreation activities.

Held from 6-31 January 2014 at the

UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre,

children aged 5-13 will participate in two

streams of age-targeted activities aimed

at enhancing their physical education,

exposing them to new and exciting

sports as well as their favourite activities

in a fun, engaging and safe environment.

Children will get to meet and play sport

with some of Perth’s best professional

athletes in specialised workshops

with the Western Force (rugby), Perth

Wildcats and West Coast Waves

(basketball) and Western Warriors and

Western Fury (cricket). The Western

Force will run a Walla Tag session, a

non-contact form of Rugby Union where

children learn how to play rugby, catch

and pass a rugby ball and develop skills

in evading opposition players.

Other favourite activities include ‘Rugby

Octopus’, where kids try to evade each

other and avoid having their flag belts

captured by the other team.

Summer fun for the young

UWA Kids Sports SUMMER Holiday Program 6 to 31 January

Tobias Hoskins, RugbyWA’s

Development Officer, said children

respond enthusiastically to these

activities, gaining new skill sets, learning

about a sport they may not have played

before and possibly even discovering

their passion for a new sport.

“The kids get on great with our staff –

we are made up of young, active people

who love being out and about with the

kids and I think they can really feel that

when we are running our sessions,”

Tobias said.

The UWA Taekwondo Club will run an

action-packed introductory workshop

which will incorporate fundamental motor

skills and individual and team challenges

such as races and popular tag-sparring.

Adeline Cheong, a UWA Taekwondo

Club black belt instructor and examiner,

said children don’t need to be athletic

to enjoy the challenge and rapid pace of

taekwondo.

In addition to athlete workshops and

scheduled activities, children will also

visit the UWA School of Sport Science

where they will learn firsthand about

the processes that underpin human

movement and the activities they are

participating in.

“We hope the children gain a love

for taekwondo and for sport in

general and develop a desire to

lead a healthy and active lifestyle”

- adeline cheong

Children will also receive tickets from

West Coast Waves, Perth’s professional

women’s basketball team, to attend

a home game on 31 January versus

the Dandenong Rangers at the WA

Basketball Centre.

The program is led by UWA Sports’

qualified and experienced coaches and

instructors, all of whom hold First Aid

qualifications and Working With Children

cards, at UWA Sports’ facilities.

To register your child for the UWA Kids

Sports Holiday Program, or to find out

more information, please visit

Battle Post Xmas BulgeFight back against the silly season with this quick and intense living room workout

Filled with office parties, backyard barbeques and holiday meals with family, friends and

in-laws, it’s no surprise that we overindulge during the festive season. Don’t let all of this

year’s hard work on the field or in the gym be spoiled by a few indiscretions in the form of

Christmas pudding!

Fight the good fight to keep those kilos at bay with this simple exercise plan you can do at

home to keep you on the right track. Once you become comfortable with the exercises, try

adding on the more difficult options.

it’s a fact - Xmas and new year are the biggest celebration times of the year.

Set 1: BURPEES

Repeat: 20 times

Beginners: Focus on depth and range of

movement. Try to be as fluid as possible.

Intermediates: Aim for more power and

intensity; finish off with a strong tuck jump.

Options: lunge/squat can be substituted

for a ‘burpee’. Dumbells/light weights can

be held throughout the set. Try to work your

way through all these.

Set 2: STEP LUNGE

Repeat: 20 lunges

Focus on dropping your back knee down until it almost touches the

ground, then pull through the heel and lift your leg while keeping your

back straight.

Option: To make this exercise more intense, add the knee lift shown

in image 3.

Set 3: PRESS

Repeat: 10x wide, 10x narrow

Perform push ups alternating between

wide and narrow arm position.

Beginners: If you struggle to do push

ups, try them with your knees on the

ground.

Set 4: DOUBLE LEG RAISE

Repeat: 20x each side

Lying on the corner of your backside (not bone), hold your legs out

straight and together. Raise your legs by squeezing your obliques

(side-abs).

Beginners: Only raise your top leg, leaving your bottom leg bent and

resting on the floor.

Set 5: PIKE PRESS

Repeat: 20 presses

From pike position, bend the arms to

lower the head to the ground, then

extending the arms back to a straight

position.

Beginners: Perform only the plank

walk without the press.

Getting Official

LEWIS RICHARDS

UWA Social Sports Soccer

Competition Manager

Studying Bachelor of Law and Economics

I first officiated football (soccer) back in

my home country of England where I

was a linesman for my school’s teams,

after I found out it was a great excuse to

get out of class. After moving to Perth

eight years ago I have umpired cricket

and refereed soccer at my high school.

As a player I always enjoyed being right

in the thick of the action and refereeing

while at university has meant I can stay

close to the action even though my

playing days are over.

I have participated in both mixed and

men’s social soccer competitions at

UWA since 2009. As a student and a

player, I became close friends with Jay

Raja, the previous soccer competition

manager who introduced me to

refereeing through the Inter-Faculty

competition.

I was inspired by the passion the players

and referees had in the heat of the

competition and I wanted to become a

part of it.

Students, staff, community

and corporates all

compete in UWA Social

Sports. One of the great benefits of being a UWA

Social Sports official is getting paid to

do what you love - facilitating sport. This

year we have students, staff, the general

public and even a corporate law firm

playing in the competition. It’s great to

see so many different players of diverse

backgrounds getting involved.

We have a great range of teams, from

veterans coming back for a third or

fourth season to a team of freshers who

are playing for the first time.

Since coming to UWA I have been

involved in the Inter-Faculty competition

through Blackstone (Law) and ECOMS

playing in soccer, cricket, touch rugby

and other sports which I am ridiculously

bad at. The Inter-Faculty competition

is great for making long lasting friends

with your fellow students while keeping

active. I was also lucky enough to play

for the University Cricket Club for a year

before work commitments took over

most of my life.

Play, learn and grow. What I enjoy the most is seeing

the teams that start off relatively

inexperienced and nervous, grow

throughout the semester and then come

back in future semesters to challenge for

the finals.

I would encourage anyone who loves

sport to become an official for UWA

Social Sports, and I know they are

always looking for people to get involved

as it is a great way to enjoy the sports

you love (and get paid for it). I am lucky

enough to be in this position through

the support UWA Sports provides to the

Social Sports program and the great

professionalism the teams conduct

themselves with.

As many of the officials would tell you, it

is also a great way to learn life skills such

as decision making, communication and

how to conduct yourself in a respectful

manner.

It’s been a privilege to officiate the

teams that participate in UWA Social

Sports. As a former player in the

competition myself, I know what it is like

to be giving the referees a hard time.

This perspective has helped me in my

officiating and I can give informed advice

when communicating with players.

Become an Official

If you are interested in becoming a

UWA Social Sports official, including

referees, umpires and competition

managers, email your CV including

any qualifications and experience to

Brad Suriani.
