Motown LP Release a Sensation Regional Meets Wrap-up:

And in Monaural, Too 18 Chess LPs InBy DAVE FINKLE

One of the success stories ofthe week is the success of thenew 15 -piece Tamla/Motown al-bum release. And a large per-centage has been mono sales.

Label, which wrote ordersamounting to $4 million at theAugust convention, already re-ports re -orders from a numberof distributors.

Barney Ales, Motown, VicePresident, told Record Worldlast week the activity has beensurprising considering t h elarge amount of orders takeninitially.

"We gave our distributorssizable quotas at the meeting,"he said, "and although theydidnt balk, they figured and wefigured that it would take acouple of months to sell thequantities. But that hasn'tbeen the case. Some of themare re -ordering already, es-pecially on monaural. It seemsthat some of our distribs knowthat if they merchandise mon-

aural records, they will sellthem. This is true in the Eastand it's spreading to the Mid-west."

`Much Better Than Expected'Murray Discosa of Alpha

Distributors in New York notedthat the Tamla/Motown re-lease was "fantastic. It hasbeen doing much better thanwe expected," he said, "and weexpected a lot. Right now it'sour second biggest line." (War-ners is their biggest.)

Discosa also said that mon-aural sales have been sizeable.

Schwartz Brothers in Wash-ington, D. C., reported havingmoved 100,000 units as of earlylast week, 40% of which weremonaural.

Gil Roberts of Arc Distribu-tors in Detroit, who handle theMotown and Soul Lines, toldRecord World that the twolabels were doing "tremendousbusiness" and selling one mon-aural record out of every three.

"The real reason for the rec-ord binge," says Key, "is tobuild our artists, keep our ros-ter to a minimum and workhard on the records that we dorelease. The artists that wehave would get lost on a majorlabel, while we can give themconcentrated effort worth bothour whiles."

As for the branching out ofhis company, Key related that,"The days of buying 20 radiospots and placing up 10 post-ers, and expecting a crowd ata C&W show are over. We'redoing this to be closer to thescene and to really promotethe shows that our artists arebooked on, in the event thereis insufficient promotion."

UA on RoadThe complete sales force of

UA Records will take to theroad in early October to presentdistribs with new album prod-uct. Each UA distributor willbe visited in their local areabeginning Oct. 9, and at thattime will be shown and soldthe new album merchandise forthe fall and winter selling sea-son. Shipment on the programwill begin Oct. 10.

This departure from UA'sstandard method of presentingnew product was specificallyinitiated by the label in answerto requests from distributorswho are finding it increasinglydifficult to attend the numerousmeetings held by the disk com-panies they represent withoutlosing valuable selling time.UA is also responding to edi-torial campaigns being con-ducted by several of the lead-ing industry trade organs inreference to the costly andtime-consuming slate of meet-ings that an independent dis-trib is obliged to attend yearly.

At the same time, the com-pany will be able to presenttheir new line to an entire localstaff, instead of to just severaldistributor representatives, asis the general custom at na-tional or regional meetings.

Exec ItineraryUnited Artists Records' VP

and Director of Marketing,Mike Lipton, will head the salescontingent. He will be visitingNew York, Newark, Chicagoand Philadelphia. Album saleschief David Greenman willtravel to Cleveland, Detroit,Minneapolis and Madison; sin-gles sales topper Sonny Kirsh-en has Baltimore, Atlanta,Charlotte and Miami on hisitinerary; regional sales stafferLee Levine hits Pittsburgh, St.Louis, Nashville and New Or-leans; Norman Weiser of UA'sWest Coast organization goes

With Productto San Francisco, Seattle andSalt Lake City; and CharlesGoldberg, also on the PacificCoast, treks to Los Angeles,Dallas, Houston and Denver.Rounding out the United Art-ists schedule is David Skolnickin Albany, Hartford and Bos-ton, and Ron Eyre who willsupervise the Canadian con-clave.

In addition to the regularnew line of UA merchandise, the company's sales force willbe showing new Christmas re-leases and product from suchsubsidiary labels as Solid State,Unart, UA International, Tale -spinners for Children and Veep, and will review catalog albumsand tape cartridges.

Bach LibertyRegional Sales Mgr.HOLLYWOOD - Mike El-

liot, Sales Director, LibertyRecords, Inc., has elevated RussBach to Regional Sales Man-ager of the entire mid -west,covering distributors and terri-torial sales offices.

Bach, who reports directlyto Elliot, will headquarter atLiberty Records DistributingCompany of Illinois in-betweenextensive traveling schedules.

Bach nowacts as liaisonwith all majoraccounts a swell as Lib-erty branchesand independ-e n t distribu-tors. As a rep-resentative o fthe corpora-tion, it will be

his responsibility to coordinateall sales activity. Bach willconcentrate heavily on sales, merchandising and market an-alysis.

MOST PICKED RECORD: Cowsills."To Sir With Love," Lulu, owns the nation.Uni Records Has a Hit: "Incense & Peppermint," Strawberry

Alarm Clock, 'is a giant in L.A. Went on most of the big stations.Johnny Bond Does His Number: "As Long As You're Here,"

Zal, went on every West Coast station within 24 hours of release.Fast re -orders in L.A. and S.F. On WMCA, KHJ, KFRC, KYA,WFIL, WCFL, WDRC, WRKO, WCAO, KDNB, WHK, KNUZ,WCOL, WUBE, KRIZ, WPGC. Bill Drake played the record firston KHJ.

Dickie Klein of Atco Did His Number: Some laughed whenDickie Klein, Supermite, screamed that "Can't Stop Loving You,"Last Word, was a hit. He gave you top 10 in Miami and all Flor-ida, #1 in Lansing and Flint and all that stuff -now can you be-lieve an order for 6,500 from Dallas off KLIF and KVIL? Some-thing's going on!

Joe Niagara, WIBG, Philadelphia Says Hit:"Love You Till Tuesday," David Bowie, Deram. So Hal Moore, WHK, says "I'm a Believer." It'son WOR-FM and Ton Donahue in S.F.

We Tipped You On: "You Mean the World ToMe," David Houston, Epic. So WMCA, N.Y.C.,said we believe and went. Now we'll really see.WIBG, WHK, WCAO, WRIT.

Why Won't They Believe Philadelphia Hits:"The Pleasure of Your Company," G.T.-C.N.,

Amy, is close to 10,000 off WIBG. Doesn't anybody want to playa proven LIVE record? . . . And then WIBG broke "EverlastingLove," Robert Knight, Rising Sun, to 40,000.

Sam & Dave Are a Pop Act: "I'm a Soul Man" is playing Bos-ton and Milwaukee. They're as pop as Dino, Desi and Billy. Andis this record selling.

Tom Jones is getting the big play every place but California. His secret is the kids dig him, and young adults and oldadults love him. Top 40 stations wish there were more artists inthis category. The sales are coming in now.

Shelby Singleton has a solid hit with "Let It Out," Hombres.Tip: "I Can't Happen Without You," Power Plant, Diamond;

WCFL, WMCA, WIBG.Kingpins Pulled It Off: "Ode" instrumental is up up and away!Martin and Tammi Are Pop: Name me one label that doesn't

want to get into R&B now. This will be Aretha Franklin's Biggest: Written by Goffin &

King and Jerry Wexler. That King girl used to come into Jerry'soffice when she was still in high school. Everyone was nuts abouther even then. Some of us think she's the greatest white soulsinger in the biz. Ever hear her demos? The title "You Make MeFeel Like a Natural Woman" was Jerry's idea. The monster "B"side from the LP, "Baby Baby Baby," will cause this one to dodouble sales. (Continued on Page 22)

Nina is GreatNEW YORK - RCA's Nina

Simone, having left the VillageGate field fallow for over twoyears, returned there recentlyto sow new seeds of content anddis-.

(She returns after her cur-rent and first stint in Las Vegasat the Caesar's Palace Lounge.)

There are few unique talentsin show business today. NinaSimone is one of them. Theantithesis of the singer whocomes out to woo, wow and winthe audience, Nina Simone be-lieves first in her songs, sec -only in herself and only lastlyin her audience.

In these days when some per-formers would swing from atrapeze with a tri-lingualsuckling pig dangling fromtheir teeth if they thought itwould please the crowd, it's apleasure somehow to watchMiss Simone come out and getlost, voice and flickering -flamebody, in her songs, waving offdisturbances from ringsiderswith an imperious gesture.

The Simone ability to createmood is well -documented. Thenight this enraptured criticsaw her, she created manymoods, like the snappy one oncurrent RCA moralizer "You'llGo to Hell." But none of hermoods was better than the ex-ultant one she spun with BillyTaylor's "I Wish I Knew HowIt Would Feel to be Free."This number could become an-other Simone signature song.

Crossroads Celebrates FirstBirthday with Major Campaign

With the slogan "You'veHeard This Line for a Year,"Crossroads Records is launch-ing a major ad and merchan-dising campaign to celebrateits first birthday. The medium-priced line of classical record-ings was introduced to the con-sumer by Epic Records inSeptember, 1966.

Epic introduced and marketedCrossroads in a lighthearted, whimsical manner. This uni-que approach was manifest incolorful, humorous album cov-ers, clever advertising whichcombined the comical drawingsof the album covers with eye-catching slogans such as"Strike a Blow for Brahms"and the introduction of a Cross-roads digest of musical min-utiae entitled "Poof! You're anExpert." This booklet was madeavailable free to consumerswhen they mailed in the couponcontained in each Crossroadsad.

In January and February,1967, a massive advertisingand in-store follow-up cam-paign entitled "Update YourEars" was initiated. Samplesof Crossroads' stereo qualitywere provided to over 120,000potential customers in the formof a free sample stereo recordwhich contained short exerptsfrom ten Crossroads albums.A custom merchandising kit, which contained the samplestereo records, along with acomplete catalog of Crossroadsreleases to that date, a dispen-ser for the sample records andcatalogs, a selection of pre -designed ad mats and a postercompiling the reviews receivedby the Crossroads product in

4. Point of purchase displaysfor retail outlets including ban-ners, window streamers andgiant posters.

5. National advertising fea-turing the slogan "Lend a Handto the Fallen Angels."

6. Continuing articles on theFallen Angels to appear in th.eRoulette Newsletter.

Normand Kurtz, Roulettelegal counsel and director ofinternational operations, con-ducted the negotiations withEnglish Decca for the releaseof the Fallen Angels record-ings. Roulette's man in London,Andrew Heath of Planetary -Nom (London) Ltd., will coor-dinate on record releases andmusic publishing of Fallen An-gels material in England.

the first six months of its exist-ence was made available to thedistribs.

Now another major advertis-ing and merchandising cam-paign has been planned, againwith a lighthearted approach. The campaign is scheduled forOctober and November.

Advertising based on thelead slogan "You've HeardThis Line for a Year" has beenplanned for record and hi-fi/stereo publications as well asfor college newspapers. Theseads will feature the new Cross-roads releases as well as acoupon announcing the newfree booklet, "Poof II-For theAdvanced Expert." Based onthe successful "Poof!" of oneyear ago, this new booklet of"musical one-upmanship" alsodoubles as a complete Cross-roads catalog including all newreleases. This year, however, inaddition to sending the bookletto all consumers who mail thead coupon direct, large bulkquantities, along with con-venient counter dispensers, willbe sent to distributors who, inturn, will make them availableto retailers.

Taking Care of Businessby Del Shields

In a recent column we re-ferred to one of Chicago's out-standing jazz jocks as follows:Of the many jazz jocks cur-rently on the scene taking careof business on the airwaves ofAmerica's radio stations, thereis none prettier or more soulfulthan Chicago's Yvonne Daniels.

Miss Daniels fills the 7-11P.M. slot on WDSM/FM, as theLate Den Pal.

Miss Daniels was the formerpartner of Sid McCoy, the veter-

an jazz giantof the nationwho almostbuilt a dy-nasty in theWindy Citythrough hismany years ashost of thenighttime jazzshow on the50,000 watter,

WCFL. Her selection by Sidcame following the high ratingsand loyal following she hadchalked up during her period atneighboring WYNR.

When she joined Sid, shebrought an amazing accumula-tion of jazz knowledge. Spicingher shows with a dash of fem-ininity and presenting the fe-male side of jazz, she helped tocreate one of the most popularmale and female radio teams toever hit the airwaves.

Her constituents in the busi-ness praise her highly. She doesnot rely on total femininityalone. A look at her picture, however, indicates there wouldbe nothing wrong if she choseto take this course to put hermessage across.

The high compliments paidher are due to her overall

Del Shields

Yvonne Daniels

knowledge of jazz and the pro-fessionalism she displays as ajazz announcer.

Inasmuch as our picture waspainted in such complimentaryhues, there were some unbeliev-ers who felt that the picturecould not equal the talent.

But this is Yvonne Daniels. Her soft sell is not the purr thatmost female jocks use a la MissMonitor Weather. S h e ap-proaches her program equippedwith a deep feeling and under-standing of the jazz arts.

Perhaps this feeling may stemfrom her show business family. She is the daughter of BillyDaniels, who was the first sing-er to put real emotion in sellinga song. His classic "Old BlackMagic" was the sophisticatedforerunner of soul.

The jazz fans of Chicago donot think of her as the daughterof Billy Daniels. They embraceher because she has a personalway of communicating and mak-ing jazz the spiritual involve-ment and soul feeder it is.

Bill Frangus, WHOO/FM,sent the following missive fromOrlando, Florida:

"It was good seeing your col-umn in print again after a fewweeks' absence. You were soright about FM's relationshipto jazz - FM stations all overthe country have almost single-handedly kept jazz alive as far asradio time is concerned.

"In the latest Pulse ratinghere in Central FloridaWHOO/FM rated higher forevening listening than all otherAM stations in the area with theexception of one rock and rollstation. In the past, this hasbeen unheard of!

"In addition, last April Flori-da Gas, one of the South's fast-est growing corporations, bought my program. They wereso impressed that an additionaltwo hours were purchased onSaturday night. They were veryhappy with the results of FMadvertising in this area. Withorganizations of this caliberbacking jazz, our music isbound to make even greaterstrides in the future.

"One more plus sign for jazzin Central Florida, and I'llclose. I have been writing a jazzreview and news column for theOrlando Evening Star. This pa-

per has a large circulation inseveral counties in this state.Last, but not least, we held ajazz concert Labor Day eveninghere in Orlando. The city of Or-lando picked up the tab to flyFrank Foster in as guest solo-ist. I emceed the affair whichfeatured Frank's charts. Theconcert was offered to the pub-lic free of charge and was at-tended by over 1,800 jazz en-thusiasts."

Reports from Other JocksJim Samuels of WBNB, Vir-

gin Islands, dropped by on aquick trip to Montreal and wasfilled with good words about therecent NATRA Convention inAtlanta. Jim agrees with methat more jazz jocks should jointhe organization since personalcontact does much to increaseservice.

We also met with Rick Holmesof KBCA/FM, Los Angeles, whowas in New York and unfor-tunately had to cut short hisstay due to the death of hisfather.

During the afternoon we hada chance to talk, I was greatlypleased to learn of his manyactivities. He represents some-thing we've been discussingfor some time and that is thejock must get out from behindthe microphone and do a littleleg work. He tells me he hasquite a few national accountson his show.

Leather Boy BusyThe Leather Boy, currently

clicking on MGM with his sin-gle, "Soulin'," has been touringand doing TV and radio to pro-mote the record.

EMI Sales Conference Flies HighLONDON - E.M.I. Records

held its 1967 Marketing & SalesConference on Sept. 4 and thelocation was E.M.I.'s own largeconference room at ManchesterSquare.

The conference was attendedby all of E.M.I.'s outside salesstaff plus key personnel, bothfrom Hayes and ManchesterSquare. The theme for th.e con-ference was "Fly High withE.M.I."

In keeping with the theme,E.M.I. had a promotional tie-upwith BOAC and the ManchesterSquare headquarters was madeto resemble an airport terminal.

The welcoming address wasgiven by Managing DirectorKen East.

Dealer Incentive PlanJohn Fruin, the General Man-

ager of E.M.I.'s Sales & Dis-tribution Division, unfurled thefirst major item -a massivedealer incentive plan which hasbeen called "Fly to the Sun."This offers E.M.I.'s top 36 rec-ord dealers (and their wives)luxury holidays in Bermuda. The scheme starts Oct. 1 andruns right through until th.eend of January, 1968. It is thefirst time any major British rec-ord company has launched adealer incentive scheme on thisscale. In addition to the majorprizes, there are to be numerousconsolation awards.

Classical repertoire was dealtwith by Leonard Smith, JohnWhittle and Bill Simmons.

Pop repertoire was dealtwith by the pop marketing teamof Ron White, Roy Feather-stone, Jack Florey, Brian Jef-fery and Colin Burn.

White, the General Managerfor the E.M.I. Pop RepertoireDivision, outlined E.M.I.'splans, as far as pop repertoireis concerned, for the ensuing12 months. He also announceda special promo tie-up with theBritish Radio Corporation -E.M.I. is producing 10,000copies of a special promotionalLP to be distributed by B.R.C.with their new range of gramo-phones. One side will be class-ical, with a commentary byRusses Turner, and the secondside will feature pop with AlanDell as commentator.

Featherstone, E.M.I.'s PopMarketing Manager, addressedthe conference at length anddivided his talk under four

main headings: recent acquisi-tions, established repertoireand the "middle" market andspecial projects.

After referring to the acqui-sition of successful new actslike the Pink Floyd, he alsotalked about the deal withDenny Cordell's New BroadProductions, the fruits of whichare being released on the reac-tivated Regal Zonophone label. He discussed that LPs by theMove and Procol Harum are inthe planning stage, and thatTony Hall's THE firm is pro-moting all New Breed/RegalZonophone product. Feather-stone remarked upon the grati-fying success of the Beatles"Sgt. Pepper's" LP Which hadpassed the half -million salesmark in the U.K., and said thathe had high hopes of a newBeatles album before Christ-mas.

New product coming fromestablished E.M.I. favorites be-fore Christmas will include asingle by the Hollies (Sept.29), a new LP by the Group inNovember, a Seekers album, aHerman LP, a religious albumby Cliff Richard entitled "GoodNews," plus an EP featuringhim singing material from aBilly Graham film and albumsfrom Vince Hill, Kenn Doddand Lulu. Featherstone saidhow pleased E.M.I. was to seeFrankie Vaughan back in thecharts, after 31/2 years wtih hisfirst single for the companyfollowing his recent labelswitch. A Blue Beat series isto be launched on Columbia. An agreement has been con-cluded with the independentproducer Ziggy Jackson, whowill record Laurel Aitken, BlueRivers and the Maroons and theBees, among other artists. Theseries will be released with ayellow label by Columbia andpackaged in blue containerbags.

Featherstone explained thatthe term "middle market" ex-cludes the enthusiatic pop andclassical markets but encom-passes film and show music, humor, the stereo series and so-phisticated artists of perennialappeal. This area will be pro-moted under the tag of "Rec-ords for All on E.M.I."

Half a million "Records forAll" booklets will be availablefree in October to support this

market and advertising spacehas been booked in Weekendand the Radio Times from Oc-tober till January. Various dis-play items have been designedfor dealers.

Command LaunchingFeatherstone gave details of

the plans concerning thelaunching of the Commandlabel on Oct. 1. Releases wouldbe in stereo only, with an ini-tial issue of 12. The label hadbeen available in the U.K. pre-viously but was now being com-pletely repackaged with fullcolor laminated sleeve frontsand backs, with the focal pointof the front repeated on theback. The LPs would retail at35s each, and to ensure theoriginal American sound, thealbums are being pressed fromAmerican metal parts. Specialpromotional aids have been pre-pared for the Command bow.

and Papas held a press confer-ence last week to announce 1)That they are not breaking upthe act; 2) they are doing nofurther recording and 3) theyare leaving for Europe for anindefinite period of time.

John Phillips, speaking forthe group, said that they reachedthe decision to leave the countryduring a recording session fortheir fourth album which willnow remain incompleted. Phil-lips said the main reason fortheir decision was the fact thatthey felt they were "grindingout the same old stuff" and weremaking no progress creatively. He blamed this on the pressuresof meeting personal appearancecommitments and recordingschedules.

They may do three concerts, one each in London, Switzerlandand Germany, but outside ofthat do not plan to work. Theirchoice of a place to live is eitherGreece or Spain. Phillips saidhe hopes to carry on his workwith the Monterey Pop Festi-val, in which he was one of themoving spirits, from Europe.
