British agents handling top teenage raves are constantly being phoned by American bookers who want to buy British-following the success of the Beatles. Dave Clark, accom- panied by organist Mike Smith, flies out this week -end as a result of an urgent transatlantic phone call from the Associated Booking Cor- poration. Dave will do TV, radio and press and promotional work in New York in connection with Glad All Over and his about -to -be released first LP. Dave was offered an engagement at the Par- amount, Broadway, from March 27 but had to turn it down because he will then be in the middle of _a British variety tour (March 16 at Empire, Liverpool, for a week; March 23 week at Hippodrome, Birmingham; 34 one night stands from March 29 to May 6). Then the five tour Scan- dinavia; Holland, Ger- many and Belgium. But before starting their summer season in Blackpool the Dave Clark Five may go to America to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show and for a Carnegie Hall concert. Dusty Springfield re- turned this week -end from a 36 hours visit to America where she lined up a three -weeks tour of U.S.A. starting in April. She'll stay awhile in New York for four concert dates and a probable recording session with American musicians. Bern Elliott and the Fenmen (whose Money will be released in U.S.A. during March) fly to New York on April 7 for four days of TV and promotions. The Tornados (whose Telstar topped the American charts a year ago) will make their first American visit and tour with a big package show next October. Heinz' You Were There is about to be re- leased in America and if this catches on, he too will be making the trip across the water. WHAT'S WRONG WITHTHE TV POP SOUND

IREAD that many pop artistes are disappointed with the lowsound level on their TV shows. I'm inclined to think that

as long as the technicians get a good clear picture, theycouldn't care less about the quality of the sound. But havingseen the excellent performances of some of these stars ontour, it is annoying to see the way they work just as hardon TV but are foiled by low -powered mikes. Cilia They Call HerA Female Beatle

IT'S indefinable, this-IL business of sorting outwhether a performer hasthat real star quality. It'ssimply something you sense-and I was sure it was therethe first time I met up withCilia Black.

Why so sure? A variety ofreasons. The way she talks,the assured manner, theDEFINITE opinions. The wayshe understands the popbusiness. Enthusiasm. Thestriking looks-that bee -hiveof marmalade -coloured "hur".

The way she is entirelyHERSELF - and hang allthose who don't accept herfor herself.

OPPOSITIONShe had only the one

record when I first encoun-tered her. "Love of theLoved"-a good debut disc,blessed by the golden touchof Beatles Lennon andMcCartney as composers.Cilia showed, I thought, thatshe was about to put someof the pretty-pretty, English -rose singers to utter dis-grace and rout.

Then "Anyone Who Had AHeart". Great song. But sois Dionne Warwick a finesinger. I had doubts. I don'tlike "cover" jobs much, any-way. And the "afficionadoset" seemed dead setAGAINST Cilia's version.

JONESBut David Jacobs leapt off

the fence to boost Cilia'sinterpretation. And that wasit-the fastest -rising singleby any girl anywhere inmany years.

Says Cilia: "I love theDionne Warwick version. Butthis song was too good forme to turn down. I didn'tthink it would be a big hit,because it's such a goodnumber. But you have totake a chance if you reallybelieve in a song . . ."

Even now, still visiblyshaken at her success, Ciliadisplays a way-out person-ality. Says: "No I can't stickto a formula. I'd like tomake follow-up discs of may-be out-and-out R and B, orblues, or calypso, or gospel.I'll have to start talking hardnow to persuade them to letme . . ."

Talking is something whichappeals to Cilia.

"After the first record, Imet up with John and PaulBeatle. They said they wereworking on a new one forme. 'Too late', I said. 'Maybenext time-but my new oneis an American song.' Thatshook 'em. They should havebeen faster off the mark . .."

In fact, she is almostanother Beatle in personalityand style. She's a mate ofmost of the Liverpool topgroups. She remembersbeing called up on stage atthe Cavern, in the days whenshe was Swingin' Cilia White,and belting out "Summertime" with the Beatles.

"What key?" asked John."Oh a Yale key", said Cilia.

Ringo Starr and Ciliafrequently argue. Mostlyabout which one has the"thicker" Liverpool accent.Difference between them isslight, but Cilia already hasthe knack of taking off adozen different accents.

Confidence is important toa star. Cilia has that . . .

a -plenty. Remember her"Juke Box Jury" appear-ances? She lammed into theunfortunate Heinz and mademillions sit up, for once, andreally take notice.

Confidencc shows, too, inthe way she dresses. Someselections are outrageous.But being DIFFERENT isanother part of the businessof being a star.

Yes, confidence shows. Butnot conceit. Says Cilia: "I'vea lot to learn. Sometimes itfrightens me how muchthere is I don't know about

THERE'S a bouncy newbass sound running

through many of the recentBritish pop discs - and,armed with magnifying glassand bloodhound, I set out totrack down the man respon-sible . . . background guitar-ist Eric Ford.

Now Eric is tied up onrecording sessions most daysfrom nine in the morningtill ten at night. A toughbut, he says, "exhilarating"life. He lumbers four guitarsand an amplifier round threestudios a day and also copessingle - handed with parkingproblems.

Four GuitarsI met him at 8.30 a.m. one

Saturday. No five-day weekfor Eiic. I asked "Why fourguitars?"

He said: "Studio musicaldirectors are constantly look-ing for new sounds and Iwas lucky coming up witha six - string bass developedby the Burns company. Thesix strings give a wider com-pass than the normal four -string instrument and theshorter neck gives me greaterflexibility."

Dubbing is quite a tech-nique in itself - you have tolisten to the original trackthrough earphones and playin the new bass part.

"Kathy is one of myfavourite artistes", said Eric."I've known her since weworked together with DennyBoyce at the London Lyceum- she has bags of band ex-perience and becomes 'one ofthe boys' in the studio.

"And I believe Dusty

Springfield has a great feel-ing for rhythm 'n' blues.She's also very decisive,knows exactly what shewants."

Eric said the hectic busi-ness of so many sessionsmeant he forgot many ofthem . . . but he did likeEden Kane's work on "BoysCry".

Apart from accompanyingsessions, Eric is kept busy

with commercials on whichhe also used the new bassguitar sound. But he's reti-cent about his work in thebackground of some of thebeat group records. "Thereare some sessions I just don'tdiscuss", he said.

Peter Jones turns the spotlight on . . .

THE FORGOTTENKINGS OF BEAT

AS has possibly been observed before, it is all happeningin Hamburg. There is more big beat per square yard on

the Reeperbahn, with its nest of clubs, than in most othercities in Europe. And, of course, groups like the Beatles,Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Searchers cut their molarson experience gained from long hours in clubs like the Starand the Top Ten.

But despite those starrynames, two other Britishproducts are the biggesttalking -points in Germany.They are King -Size Taylorand Tony Sheridan. Both arcreleased, disc - wise, here onthe Polydor label, whichmeans there's a danger thatthese two talents may notget the publicity they de-serve.

Herewith a fair slab ofblack - and - white to putthis matter right.

Tony Sheridan. I remem-ber, was a talented guitarist,Norwich - born, skiffle -

grounded, long before theGermans realised his abilities.But his break was too slowcoming in Britain. He spreadhis wings. . . .

BEATLESTo Germany, where he had

the privilege of employingthe then largely unknownBeatles as his backing groupon "My Bonnie". Tony was"guv'nor" in Hamburg inthose days. British groupslined up to watch him workand learn a few wrinklesabout beat -purveying. Ironic-ally, he didn't register hereat all until Polydor released"Bonnie" and got it into thecharts on the strength of theBeatles' backing sounds.

This disc, incidentally, hasalso sold over quarter of amillion in the States... againbecause of the Beatles beingon the label.

He next joined Vince Tay-lor's backing group, latermeeting Brian Bennett andLicorice Locking and forminga trio which backed CliffRichard, Vince Eager, ConwayTwitty, Johnny Preston, GeneVincent.

STUPIDProducer Jack Good fea-

tured Tony on "Oh Boy",forerunner of the telly -beatshows. "There should havebeen others", says Tony."But I went a bit haywireand turned up late, or forgotmy guitar or something. Iwas stupid. And Jack Goodwas much more patient withme than he should havebeen."

Then a Mr. Koschmieder,of Hamburg, booked Tonywith a rock group for theKaiser Kellar Club in Ger-many - a club originallyplayed by the Beatles. Thefirst real rock outfit in Ger-many, this. He moved on tothe Top Ten Club, then theStar, where he is still resi-dent and has shared billswith Ray Charles, BrendaLee. Little Richard, DuaneEddy, Everlys and so on.Observed Ray Charles: "Ireally dug this group. Thisboy Sheridan sings with alot of soul..."

Now King - Size Taylor,once front - man (and whata front!) of the Dominoesbut now leading the Shakerson the grounds that it is aneasier name to sell. He's aLiverpudlian, who went toLiverpool College of Art.

He also came up through

the skiffle days with a group,"The James Boys". They de-veloped into Taylor and theDominoes and did well inthe Liverpool beat scene untilnearly eighteen months agowhen they went to Hamburgto the Star Club.

They flitted between Ger-many and Britain for a while,finding more and moregroups growing up in Liver-pool each time they returned.In March, 1963, they returnedto the Star Club wherethey're still going strong,though occasionally able toreturn to liven the Liverpoolscene.

Says King - Size: "We'reglad in one way that Wecannot be classified as yetanother Liverpool sound, be-cause we developed our styleaway from the Liverpoolscene."

TRENDSAgain, it's odd that so

many "visiting" Britishartistes should rave aboutKing - Size and his giant -size talent, yet he staysvirtually unknown in Britain.

These two stars have pion-eered plenty in the beatscene. They've been respon-sible for the development ofseveral of the top groups inBritain, simply through set-ting trends along the Reeper-bahn - trends which havebeen eagerly followed.

In these two personalities,Polydor have potentialMoney - spinners. Personally,I'd like to see Tony andKing - Size really get thepublicity and acclaim theydeserve here in their owncountry.

Just hope I've helped a bitwith this story, that's all.

THITHE Crystals, the girls

who made the Britishcharts when other Americanartistes were hopelessly outof fashion just don't knowwhy they are so successfulin Britain. They can't saywhether or not it's theirvocals, Phil Spector's arrange-ments, or the songs theysing. Or a combination of allthree.

Nevertheless they are prob-ably the world's top femalegroup at the moment interms of sales. Only theRonettes and the Shirellessell anything like as many asthe Crystals. And of courseit was the success of theCrystals that paved the wayfor the similarly -styled Ron-ettes.

TOUR

The girls themselves a r eengaged in an extensive tourwith Joe Brown, Heinz, Man-fred Mann etc. And enjoyingevery minute of it. And theirnew disc "I wonder" lookslike a worthy follow up to,their last few hits here.

The Crystals themselves'started out as a five oeceteam with ideas of becominga vocal group. They wouldmeet and rehearse, until oneday Phil Spector heard themin their New York studiosand immediately took an in-terest in them and wantedto sign them up.

IDEAS

"We thought that he was abit young though," the girlstold me. "He had such ideasand plans, and eventually wesigned up with him. We cutour first disc called 'There'sno other' back in May '61. Itwasn't released until Septem-ber of that year, but it madethe U.S. Top Twenty."

"Then we cut 'Uptown,'and that was an even biggerhit. We thought we were setup when we found out ourthird disc was to be 'He hitme (and it felt like a kiss).'We didn't like that one. Afterwe had cut it we absolutelyhated it. Still do. Phil was soparticular about the arrange.ment and the sound that wehad a terrible session.

"What made it worse wasthat after a few weeks hadgone by and the disc wasissued it was selling well. Butthe kids at school startedsinging it, and their teachersheard them. They didn't likethe title and lyrics so theParent Teachers' Associationgot it banned."

"He hit me" reached No.107 in Cash Box on August18. It was issued on July 21,and on August 25 "He's arebel" was issued after "Hehit me" was banned. So theCrystals didn't have muchluck with that one despitethe glowing reviews that allthe music mags gave it.

NEW YORK

The first three Crystalsdiscs were cut in New York,and only one of them"There's no other" was issuedin Britain at the time. Thatwas on the Parlophone label."He's a rebel" and the sub-sequent releases up until"Little boy" were cut in Cal-ifornia, "Little boy" and "Iwonder" were cut in NewYork again.

UNAFFECTEDThe Crystals themselves

are a bunch of unaffectedgirls who have been dashingaround London sightseeingduring their spare moments.There are four Crystals atthe moment - La La Brooks,Dee Dee Kennibrew, BarbaraAlston and the new girl, ex -dancer Frances Collins. Thetwo ex -Crystals are PatWright, founder -member ofthe group who left becauseshe wanted to continue her

studies. She thought of thegroup's name, but wasn't veryinterested in Show Businesssay the other girls.

RAGE"But we are though . . . "The other was dropped

when four -girl groups becamethe rage. Another reason forher leaving was to get mar-ried. The favourite artistesof the girls are the Shirelles,Sam Cooke, the Impressions,Major Lance, Jerry Butlerand Dionne Warwick.

"We like the Beatles, butwe would have got to the tophere with 'Then he kissedme' if it hadn't been for'She loves you' . . . theysaid laughingly.

FAVOURITE

Their favourite of theirown numbers is "He's arebel," and all the girls liketheir music to be calledrhythm and blues ratherthan rock. They say theyare a very happy group,unlike a lot of teams whohave tasted tremendous suc-cess and they reckon thatthey want to develop a dif-ferent style from the onethey already have. They plana maturer approach, in factthey greatly admire theMcGuire Sisters for the waythey have become evergreenentertainers.

Just for the record, noneof the girls is married. "We'dlike to be though," they say.But -to do that the girlswould have to give up theircareer with the fabulousCrystals.

What a choice . . . !

writing tips"QONGS," says MitchLi Murray, "are very per-

sonal animals. They appealto spontaneous emotions andtherefore there cannot beany strict rules for writingthem'? And Mr. Murray shouldknow what he is talkingabout.

He has built a vast bank balancefrom his writing in the past yearor so-and now he passes on somehints to beginners in a very read-able and well -presented book.

CATCHY

Mitch reveals that the wordsusually come first with him. Heprefers to express his words withthe music-and he normally triesto start with a catchy title. "Thetitle is very important-it is vitalto put it at the beginning at.d endof every verse."

He says songs should tell stories.And. as with most hits, they shouldbe simple and original. "At notime should the meaning or con-tinuity be sacrificed for the sakeof a rhyme. There are alwaysways of 'Fiddling'-as with theword 'better,' when you can alwaysuse two smaller words like 'gether' or 'let her.'

"And DON'T," he says, "usehackneyed rhymes such as 'loveand turtle dove' or 'arms andcharms.' This shows poor, lazythinking. It is unprofessional.

CONTRAST"The opening of your song should

hit people squarely between theeyes; it should make them sit upand listen. When you've capturedtheir imagination, go ahead andtell the story. The middle eightshould be something of a contrastand the conclusion should be acomplete conclusion and, if not ahappy one, then at least a hopeful.one. No song should end withoutthe hope of a happy prospect. Onlyvery rarely does a miserable songsell."

Mitch presumes: "You have, likeme, no musical knowledge at all.It may surprise you to know thatmost of our top songwriters are inthe same boat.

"But buy a tape - recorder. Afine investment - never trust yourmemory or you may lose a hitsong."

Once you have your song, youtry to find fault with it. Check thatthe words are "singable", withoutunconscious tongue - twisters. Ifit's all right, then the next stage isthe demonstration disc.

IN pour the letters. Most of them say howDARE Bobby Vee imitate the Beatles!

So let's set the record straight: Bobby is notsorry about his latest Liberty single She's Sorrywhich is based on the Beatles' sound.

Why on earth should hebe?

Consider this: Where didthe Beatles get the vocabu-lary of their songs from (allthose "yeahs" and "babies"and "twists")? Where didthey get the inspiration fortheir rhythm-and-blues andballad melodies and chordsequences from? Where didthey get their drum kits andelectrified guitars from?

The answer, of course, isAmerica. Without the in-fluence of American popmusic the Beatles wouldsimply be four haircuts andfour unusual jackets.

Now an American-BobbyVee-has used the distinctiveBeatles sound (which issimilar to many Americangroup sounds of eight yearsago when Bobby was 12 andmost of today's Beatles fanswere far too young to knowwhat was happening on theU.S. beat scene) and loads ofBritish fans are crying, ineffect, "Stop Thief!"

To which the answer isNonsense! THIS is thecountry that is notorious forhaving local performers cashin on established Americanhits by "covering" them(i.e. copying them andsyphoning off the sales).Bobby Vee has had it doneto him (Marty Wilde did aversion of Rubber Ball) andat the moment there is a

particularly choice exampleat the top of the charts:Cilia Black's Anyone WhoHad A Heart is pulling inall the money over herewhile the version shecopied, by Dionne Warwick,languishes at the bottom ofthe table.

Bobby has covered norecord. She's Sorry is similarin _style to the Beatles' SheLoves You but it is not acopy, not an attempt to takesales away from anotherrecord.

This is Bobby's view: "Ihave the feeling that thisis the sound that will bearound for quite a while andif that is what people wantto hear I am happy to giveit to them.

"I love the Beatles. A yearand a half ago I did aconcert in Birkenhead andheard the Merseyside soundfor the first time. I believethey were playing nearbybut I didn't hear them inperson. I did buy their recordof Love Me Do, though. Itook it back to my recordcompany, Liberty, andsuggested they release it.They didn't want to know!

"Well, in the last fewmonths the pop scene in theStates was getting so dull.Something was needed toliven it up and the Beatlesprovided the answer. I thinka lot more singers will beusing a Beatles -type sound.I'd hate to be, say thefourth guy to do it. I thinkI got in at the right time.A month ago I recorded awhole album, Sounds FromEngland. It's a tribute tothe great Liverpool soundand I made the albumbecause I have a greatadmiration for the Beatlesand the other British groups.You know, it's easy to get

in a rut, and I was. ThisBeatles sound has helped meget out of the rut, and I'mgrateful."

And having said that,there didn't seem much elseto say about She's Sorry (onwhich Bobby does a bit ofdouble -tracking and has acouple of guys to help himget the group sound) so weturned the conversation toBobby's latest LP; I Remem-ber Buddy Holly. How welldoes Bobby rememberBuddy?

CHART CHATTERrLENTY of fast movement this week. Cilia takes over the

number one spot after only a week's stay by the Bachelors.while Brian Poole, Dave Clark, Dusty Springfield and Eden

Kane all shoot up the lists. The Rolling Stones crash in with theirfine rendering of "Not fade away," closely followed by severalother big names like Billy J. Kramer, the Hollies and Heinz.

Biggest surprise of the week must me "It's an open secret" bythe Joy Strings making the charts. This Salvation Army beat dischas had a lot of publicity, and could mean an even bigger hitfor Joy herself, and the once big -hit record company Regel Zono-phone which now deals exclusively with Salvation Army discs.

Andy Williams and Maureen Evans are two of the classiersingers to make the charts, while Mary May makes it with thethird version of the lovely "Anyone who had a heart." Freddie andthe Dreamers look like having their fourth big hit in a row with"Over you," but a lot of people feel it's not as good as some oftheir discs.

The SearchersLAST but by no means least of the Searchers is Chris Curtis, last one to join the group

but acknowledged by the others as their spokesman and leader. He moved to Liverpoolwith his parents at the tender age of four and has lived there ever since. He has beeninterested in music from a rather early age. In fact the first instrument he played was theviolin.

"But I don't talk about that. Nevertheless I grew pretty competent at it. In fact I've stillgot the old instrument lying around somewhere.""My musical tastes came

out very early in life ton.For instance I used to likeJosh White from a very ten-der age. From then I likednothing but blues. My tasteshaven't changed - therearen't many other forms ofmusic that I can stand. Idon't like British recordsusually, only American ones.My current favourite disc isDionne Warwick's "Anyonewho had a heart." I don'treally agree with the otherson musical things allthe time. But that doesn'tinclude work with the groupof course. We all pick outthe songs we would mostlike to record, and naturallyour first album "Meet T h eSearchers" had the best mat-erial on it although t h esecond was better recorded.

WRITING"Although we have only re-

corded "Sugar and spice" asan original - it was writtenby Tony Hatch - I mustadmit that I'd like to have ashot at writing some num-bers for the group myself.But I don't really knowmuch about the commercialside of recording work. Forinstance I thought that Pyehad made a big mistake inissuing the "Sweets for mysweet" EP. But it shot upinto the EP charts eventhough the single hadn't beena hit. The single itself waspicked by Pye out of the12 tracks we privately re-corded after we turned fullyprofessional last April. Theywere right. "Needles" was agamble as far as everyonewas concerned. But at leastit means that we'll be freeto change our styles arounda little now."

THIS WEEK

CHRIS CURTISPersonally Chris likes

blondes, London and Liver-pool, and like the others hasthe travel bug. Again hehasn't a driving licence. Hedoesn't like any form ofsport - he just isn't inter-ested in it, despite the otherswho actively support theirfavourite team, Everton. He'sprobably the most unusualcharacter in the Searchers-in fact anyone would be sur-prised to find him in a beat

group at all. But he has con-centrated everything on thegroup, and now t h eSearchers and their music ishis life.

He is one of the foulreasons why the Searcherslook like holding their topplace in the scene for manyyears to come. The otherthree reasons of course areJohn McNally, Tony Jacksonand Mike Pender.

It has been brought to our attention that we didnot give credit where credit was due last week in ourEden Kane story. It appears that Tommy Scott (above)was also very much involved in writing " Boys Cry."We regret that our information sources let us down.

HOW did it all start?-this controversial career of theRolling Stones? Well, starting point was in the Station

Hotel at Richmond, Surrey. In the late months of 1962 andspilling into 1963, a reputation was being built.

Six frantic youngsters, casual in dress and playing thebest R and B heard in Britain, pulled in crowds on theirweekly sessions-until it ended with hundreds being turnedaway each night. They also appeared weekly at Ealing andvarious other hot -beds of pioneering R and B interest.

But there was no sign of a record for the group in thosedays-and the group itself was unknown outside the Rand B clan.

And here we sound a trumpet on behalf of the RecordMirror. Giorgio Gomelsky, a film producer and promoter ofthe Station Hotel meetings, told this magazine that he wasfilming a session of the Rolling Stones . . . and wonderedif anyone was interested.

They were. Two Record Mirror writers hot -footed it toRichmond on Giorgio's recommendation. And were knockedout by what they heard and saw.

Note that there were then but SIX Rolling Stones. Pianoand Maraccas' player, Ian Stewart, dropped out to becomethe team's road manager, though he still often appearswith them in clubs and played on "Stoned," the bluesyinstrumental which was the flip of "I wanna be your man."

A glowing feature appeared in the Record Mirror, praisingthe boys' abilities to the skies. Next day, writer NormanJopling was beseiged by phone calls from all the majorrecord companies, asking if the boys were available forwaxing.

The answer was "Yes"-and the bidding for one ofBritain's hottest teams was to start. Decca won and havehad no cause for regrets. With "Come on," "I wanna be yourman" and now "Not fade away" all huge -selling hits, theStones have increased their popularity with each week.

And perhaps the biggest triumph of all-their EP, "TheRolling Stones," toppling the Beatles in the extended-playcharts.

But the Beatles are admirers of the Stones. John and Paulvisited the boys at Richmond and were greatly impressed-so much so that later they suggested the Stones shouldrecord "I wanna be your man." They also paved the wayfor the Stones to appear at Liverpool's Mecca of Beat, theCavern Club.

The boys have also been praised by THEIR idol, AmericanR and B artiste Bo Diddley, with whom they appeared whenhe toured here with the Everly Brothers-one of the mostsuccessful tours to date.

Independent disc producer Andrew Loog Oldham hashandled many of their releases so far and will be producingtheir new LP which will be ready soon.
