Speaker Bios  James Berger Partner, King & Spalding James Berger specializes in international disputes, particularly cross‐border and multi‐jurisdictional proceedings.  A partner in the law firm King & Spalding's Global Disputes practice, James represents clients in a broad range of international and domestic commercial conflicts.  James has substantial experience in litigating matters under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, and other statutes and legal regimes that apply in cross‐border proceedings.   Brian Burke Partner, Shearman & Sterling Brian Burke is head of the law firm Shearman & Sterling’s Asia Litigation and Investigations practice.  Brian has conducted investigations in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.  As a fluent Mandarin speaker, Mr. Burke has a particular focus on advising multinationals with operations in China in the areas of FCPA/anti‐corruption, economic sanctions, antitrust, shareholder litigation, anti‐money laundering and other compliance and investigative matters.  Clients describe Mr. Burke as a “very, very skillful communicator, including at board level” and note that his 

“language and passion for Chinese culture are unique.”   Chris Cogburn Trial Lawyer, Kobre & Kim Chris Cogburn is a trial lawyer who represents clients in multijurisdictional disputes, particularly those involving the enforcement of high‐value judgments and arbitration awards, securities litigation, and white‐collar and regulatory defense. He also has experience conducting internal investigations that arise from government scrutiny.  Before joining Kobre & Kim, Mr. Cogburn practiced at O’Melveny & Myers and Jones Day.  Professor Martin S. Flaherty The Leitner Family Professor of Law at Fordham Law School Martin S. Flaherty is Leitner Family Professor of Law and Founding Co‐Director of the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, where he was Fellow in the Program in Law and Public Affairs and a Visiting Professor at the New School in New York. Professor Flaherty has taught at China University of Political Science and Law and the National Judges College in Beijing, and co‐founded the Rule of Law in Asia Program at the Leitner Center as well as the Committee to Support Chinese Lawyers.  Previously

Professor Flaherty served as a law clerk for Justice Byron R. White of the U.S. Supreme Court and Chief Judge John Gibbons of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.  Professor Flaherty's publications focus upon constitutional law and history, foreign affairs, and international human rights and appear in such journals as the Columbia Law Review, the Yale Law Journal, the Michigan Law Review, the University of Chicago Law Review, Constitutional Commentary, the Harvard journal of Law and Policy, the Harvard Human Rights Journal, and Ethics & International Affairs.   Carol Lee Senior Associate Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman Carol Lee has handled a wide array of commercial disputes in federal and state courts in the U.S. She has had extensive experience working with international clients.  She routinely works with Chinese clients, including some of China’s largest banks and corporate entities. She has successfully represented major Chinese investment conglomerates in obtaining seven‐figure and eight‐figure judgments against U.S. defendants. She also worked on a successful case of first impression in the Cayman Islands. Carol is fluent in written Chinese and in spoken Mandarin and Cantonese.       

Michelle Ng Senior Associate Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman Michelle Ng, Pillsbury Litigation senior associate fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, advocates for her clients’ interests and helps resolve their legal disputes and regulatory matters efficiently. 

Michelle’s clients have included U.S. and Chinese corporations with operations in both China and the U.S. Additionally, she has also completed a secondment in the Legal and Compliance Department at the federal branch of a top‐five Chinese state‐owned bank in New York.    Geoffrey Sant Partner and Co‐Chair of the China Practice, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman Co‐leader of Pillsbury’s China practice, partner Geoffrey Sant maintains a practice focused on advising clients on complex litigation with an emphasis on commercial, corporate and financial litigation and transactions.  Known for his extensive experience in representing both Chinese and U.S. financial entities, Geoffrey represents some of the world’s largest banks, investment companies and businesses in both litigation and transactional matters.  Geoffrey teaches “China in U.S. Litigation” at Columbia University School of Law, and has taught Banking Litigation and fundamental lawyering skills classes at Fordham University School of Law, and at China University of Political Science and Law (in Beijing).
