HOWDY!Fifteen years old and still looking like new! It is hard to believe that fifteen years has already passed since then Student Body President Toby Boenig and the Aggie Family opened the Rec Center on August 25th, 1995! Thanks to the vision of student and staff leaders, over nineteen million guests have entered the Rec since it opened!

Since the inception of the building, the futuristic vision of staff has ensured that funds are set aside yearly to preserve and update the appearance, equipment and technology of the Rec Center. This philosophy has kept the Student Recreation Center on the cutting edge. Like those that saw the need and voted to pass a fee that would allow for the building of the Rec Center, current students see the need to keep the Rec in great condition. As such, students have assumed the role of care taker of the Rec Center and those who use the facility take care of it to ensure future Aggies will have quality equipment, technology and a facility that continues to meet the expectations of all Aggies.

As always, special mention must be made of our Aggie Family. I would like to thank all our former student staff, former sport club members, and friends who have supported the Department of Recreational Sports. Your support allows endowments to provide scholarships, leadership development opportunities, equipment, and other benefits for sport clubs and individual student staff.

For those interested in supporting some aspect of the Department, now is the perfect time to donate. Thanks to the Texas A&M Foundation and their online giving program, donating has never been easier. Go to givenow.tamu.edu. Use the “Select a College or Program to Support menu” and select “Recreation Sports” from the Student Affairs section. Then, direct your gift to the appropriate endowment or fund you wish to support.

In closing, I would like to encourage all former student staff to reflect back on the time they were in school and in need of financial support. Now, you have the opportunity to provide support to the next generation of Aggies in their educational and recreational endeavors. Therefore, I request that you continue to support the Department of Recreational Sports. Donate today!

Thanks and Gig’em!

dennis corringtonLifetime of Fun. Profession of Service.

THESE DAYS, COMMITTING TO ONE JOB for an entire career is not always the norm. In fact, many students entering the work force have been taught to pursue multiple jobs throughout their professional lives. But for Dennis Corrington, the Department of Recreational Sports has been the perfect fit for over thirty-seven years.

Corrington, who was hired in 1973 as the Director of Intramurals, has played an integral part in making Rec Sports what it is today. As a testament to his hard work and dedication, Corrington was recently named Executive Director of the Department of Recreational Sports.

During his time at Texas A&M, Corrington has seen the student body grow from 18,000 students to 50,000+ students and the Rec Sports annual budget of $50,000 increase to $16 million. However, Corrington said the biggest adjustment he has seen during his time here has been a change in the mission of the Department of Recreational Sports.

When Corrington began working at Texas A&M, the goal of Rec Sports was to “provide sports recreation and/or competitive outlets for students.” This was primarily fulfilled through extensive intramural opportunities for students.

Today, the mission of Rec Sports is to provide quality programs, services and facilities to a diverse Texas A&M community. Rec Sports also encourages a lifestyle of healthy living that will extend beyond the average four years that most students spend at Texas A&M University. Corrington aims for every Aggie “to have the opportunity to understand what living a healthy lifestyle means.” Rec Sports does this by giving Texas A&M students, staff, and former students the facilities and means necessary to accomplish their overall goal.

“This has meant a significant shift in thinking about how we do business at Rec Sports,” Corrington explained. The addition of strength

training equipment, Group RecXercise classes, day-long recreational swimming, massage therapy and a healthy living lecture series are all examples of how Rec Sports embraced the new mission to help Aggies live healthy lifestyles.

“The college experience is supposed to be an educational experience,” said Corrington on reaching out to the student population. “If every Aggie that graduates here has learned something about living a healthy lifestyle, then we are benefiting the population of students and beyond.”

Though it is a challenge to keep up with the ever-growing student population at Texas A&M, Rec Sports has been able to develop alongside the university. The high standards of Rec Sports and its commitment to students are well known throughout the country. Corrington said of other universities, “If they aren’t benchmarking against us, they should be.”

Rec Sports is often in the process of upgrading and maintain facilities. Currently, plans are being finalized to update and improve the Golf Course and add four artificial turf fields at Penberthy. When asked what to expect for the future of Rec Sports, Corrington anticipated that future construction will almost double the size of the Rec Center, and could be underway within the next six months.

It is clear that Texas A&M and the Department of Rec Sports have greatly benefited from Corrington’s thirty-seven years of hard work and dedication. John Meyer, former Assistant Director at Rec Sports, spoke highly of Corrington at the Rec Sports Reunion on October 16th saying, “Dennis Corrington was a great boss. He gave you the tools you needed to do your job. That is a mark of a great leader!”

THIS YEAR’S 39TH ANNUAL GOLF

CLASSIC will be held May 20th and 21st at the Texas A&M Golf Course. The event is open to the public and offers tiered pricing for Texas A&M students. The tournament features a six man scramble format, making it unique to any other tournament in the Bryan College Station area.

The Texas A&M Golf Course staff expects to register at least 120 participants but space is limited to the first 144 participants. Registration fees include green fees, cart fees, range balls for two days, complimentary beverages and snacks, ditty bag, hat, contest holes, lunch Friday, food and two drinks at the Friday evening event, breakfast and lunch Saturday and awards. Profits from the Golf Classic are used to finance the daily operations of the Golf Course and to promote junior golf for Bryan/College Station youth.

Each year, the Texas A&M Golf Course offers scholarships to junior golfers granting them access to the golf course for three months during the summer. The Texas A&M Golf Course targets students entering grades 6-8 because they are not eligible to play on

high school teams. Typically, eight to fifteen students are selected.

There are also many opportunities for businesses to support the mission and values of the Texas A&M Golf Course and junior golf through sponsorship opportunities in the 39th Annual Golf Classic. In the past, businesses have donated items that can be used as prizes or for bid in the silent auction. Some companies prefer to be a tee, range, club house, meal or corporate sponsor each of which gives varying degrees of exposure to the Texas A&M Community.

For more information about how to get involved with the Texas A&M Golf Classic please contact RICK KAHLICH or MARK HAVEN at 979-845-1723 or 979-862-

1419. If you are interested in participating

in the 39th Annual Golf Classic you can find registration information at RECSPORTS.TAMU.EDU.

Space is limited! We recommend that you complete your registration as soon as possible to ensure you have a spot in this year’s Golf Classic! Look for details online soon!

For some, the road to and from Texas A&M is well traveled. For Jim Jeter, his time at Texas A&M Rec Sports was an experience he will never forget. Jeter graduated from Texas A&M University in 1970 with a Health and Physical Education Degree. After graduation, Jeter left College Station and served for two years in the army. It was in 1973 when Jeter returned to Texas A&M, but this time as the Assistant Director of the Department of Rec Sports.

Jeter describes his time working for the Department of Recreation Sports as a “dynamic time” for both the University and Rec Sports. “We had such a low participation rate when we first got here,” Jeter recalled, “but there was so much potential, and the university was growing so fast.” The university’s growth challenged the Department of Rec Sports to create quality programs and services that would appeal to the student body. While Jeter worked for Rec Sports, most recreation was focused on intramural competition.

“One of the things Rec Sports helps you develop is career sports you can do for the rest of your life,” Jeter says. “You’re not going to be a professional football player for the rest of your life but you might cycle, you might swim, play racquetball or even golf, and Rec Sports is a place where you can learn all those skills.”

“One of my initial responsibilities was recruiting and training intramural officials and supervisors,” Jeter explained. He estimates between two hundred to three hundred students were working for Rec Sports as officials by the time he left in 1979.

When Jeter reflected on the changes he has seen since he has left Rec Sports he said, “I think Rec Sports continues to expand the quality of the facilities that are available, the level of competition for the sports clubs and the breadth of intramural competition, all of which are really pretty amazing.”

In 1979, Jeter accepted a position at the Texas A&M Alumni Association where he worked for twenty years. Currently, Jeter works in Mississippi as the Chief Development Officer and the Executive Director of the St. Dominic’s Health Services Foundation. Jeter returned to Aggieland once again for the Rec Sports Reunion last October.

John Meyer, upon his return to A&M for the first time in ten years, was proud to say, “it’s good to be back!” Meyer, a graduate of Iowa State, was hired by Dennis Corrington in 1974 as the Assistant Director of the Department of Recreational Sports.

“When I arrived here, Texas A&M was the fastest growing university in the country” he said, “We had 33,000 students at the time.” During his two years as an employee at Rec Sports, Meyer remembered initiating innertube water polo, canoe races on the Brazos and saw the “big sports” like softball, football and soccer increase to nearly 500 teams each year.

“Everybody pitched in and did everything together” Meyer explained. “We had incredible student employees.” He credits this team work to the incredible growth Rec Sports saw in intramurals during the early 1970’s.

“Because I’ve been at several different universities people will ask me, which is my favorite” Meyer explained, “ I say the school that is head and shoulders above anybody in terms of the traditions and spirit, has been Texas A&M.”

Meyer still considers Texas A&M, “one of the premiere places in the country to work because of the students.” For Meyer, the students make the difference in the quality of programs offered at Rec Sports. Their energy, contributions and commitment to keeping quality programs in place at Texas A&M really stand out.

Meyer reflected on his return to Texas A&M saying, “I came back after thirty-five years and the Aggie Spirit, it is contagious.” Though College Station has “grown up” and nothing but the Dixie Chicken seems the same to him, Meyer is reassured because, “the spirit is alive and well.”

For many, the connection to Texas A&M begins as a student and most of the time, continues as a proud Aggie Parent. Keyea Peters attended her first Rec Sports Reunion this fall, and really enjoyed bringing back her student staff memories with Rec Sports alumni.

Peters graduated from Texas A&M in December 1977 with a degree in education and worked as a part time student worker for the Department of Rec Sports. At the time, Peters was one of six staff members for Rec Sports. Peters explains how she “answered the phone and took racquetball reservations, a few hours a day, three to four days per week.”Peters job was fun, and the best part about it, it worked around her school schedule.

Even though she was not full time, Peters said she worked as part of a close team with the other staff members. Peters said about working with Dennis Corrington, Jim Jeter and John Meyer; “I know they worked hard, but it was a great environment to be a part of.”

Despite the times the staff put in long nights and hours, Peters remembers, “They were great to work for, if you could call that work! We all had so much fun. I remember Jim and John just having a good time while working, everyone enjoying all of their laughing and cutting up. “

Like Jeter and Meyer, Peters remembers a strong focus on intramural sports during her time at Rec Sports. “It seemed like everyone was involved in some kind of intramural sport.”

Corrington, Meyer and Jeter all seemed to agree that Peter’s personality and enthusiasm had not changed a bit since she had last worked at Rec Sports. Peters said seeing Corrington, Jeter and Meyer again was one of her favorite parts of the Rec Sports Reunion.

After graduation Peters spent fifteen years teaching, and is now enjoying being a stay-at-home mom. Her daughter Kaylie is a freshman at Texas A&M and also attended the reunion with Peters this year. Peters says she is so proud of Kaylie, and hopes her son will be attending Texas A&M in the near future.

IT IS GAME DAY at Kyle Field. The unique blend of the War Hymn echos through campus, whoop’s are passed among strangers and the sound of senior cadets’ boot spurs on the concrete is impossible to recreate. The collective Spirit of generations of Aggies arriving to represent the 12th Man cannot be described, only felt.

Nothing can compete with Game Day in Aggieland. So why experience Game Day anywhere else?

Instead of being stuck on a couch on Game Day, the Department of Recreational Sports invites all current student staff, former student staff, and Sport Club members to stop by and enjoy the sounds, spirit and fun offered at a Fightin’ Texas Aggie Tailgate.

For each home football game, Rec Sports sets up a tailgate on the front lawn of the Student Recreation Center and grills hot dogs and sausage. Water and non-alcoholic beverages are provided.

Chris Weachock, a graphic artist for Rec Sports, helps set up the tailgates before each home game. He says, “These tailgates are a great way to meet new people and mingle with current and previous Rec Sports Staff. Usually alumni and current students are the ones who stop by so

you get a wide variety of interesting people.”Rec Sports would like to encourage Sport Clubs,

intramural teams or other groups associated with Rec Sports to host a joint tailgate with Rec Sports in the future. This fall, the Judo Club reunited with current and previous club members through a joint tailgate with Rec Sports. It was a great way for the Judo Club to get everyone together again to reflect on great memories from the past and get excited about the great activities planned for the future.

If you are interested in attending a specific tailgate in the fall, please contact JAMES WELFORD at [email protected]. Knowing how many to people to expect at each tailgate helps Rec Sports ensure that there is enough food and water for everyone.

Rec Sports hopes to see you at a tailgate next fall!

rec sports reunionKeeping the Aggie Spirit alive.

REC SPORTS REUNIONS are great for catching up with old friends, enjoying the atmosphere of game day and reliving memories with current and previous Rec Sports Staff. This year, the Texas A&M University, Department of Recreational Sports hosted its annual reunion on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Student Recreation Center. The reunion coincided with the home football game vs. Missouri.

More than 200 current and former staff attended the Reunion. Attendees were given the opportunity to use the Rec Sports facilities free of charge for the weekend and were invited to tailgate and attend the Reunion BBQ following the football game.

With game time set for 11:00 am the Rec Sports tailgate started off three hours prior to game time at 8:00am, with coffee and breakfast tacos available to those who arrived before the game. The tailgate continued until the end of the 4th quarter.

Spirits were high as the Reunion BBQ kicked off immediately following the game. More than four

decades-worth of former student workers, staff and sport club members came together to share stories and reunite with old friends.

Jeremy Blevins, Class of 2006, worked for Rec Sports for two and a half years. He said coming to his third reunion was something he had been looking forward to because of the “great food and chance to reconnect with old friends and co-workers”.

During the Reunion BBQ, current and former members of the Judo team and student staff scholarship recipient, Matthew Altendorf, took the opportunity to thank donors for their continued support of Rec Sports programs and endowments.

Next year the Rec Sports Reunion will be held on October 15th, the same day the Aggies face off against Baylor, so be sure to save the date! Additional information about next year’s reunion will be available in the Spring. Make sure to RSVP at HTTP://RECSPORTS.

sailing to successTexas A&M Sailing Team sets sail for next spring!

SAILING TO SUCCESS is the perfect description of one of the main goals for the Texas A&M Sailing Team. Members use their knowledge and talent when competing in sailing regattas throughout Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Florida. “We race each other solely by our ability to use the wind as power,” says freshman Physics Major Travis Conger about the Texas A&M Sailing Team. “I love the mechanics of sailing and the ability to go out and glide across the water by using the power of the wind.”

As part of the Texas A&M Sailing Team, Conger and his teammates have the opportunity to develop both athletic and leadership skills through practice and competition. The team was established in 1990 as a Rec Sports Club. Conger described the team dynamics, “The team is made up of only students who all work together to coach, manage, and compete. We all want to get better at sailing and the upperclassmen really help us by teaching us the many aspects of racing and sailing”.

This fall, the team traveled almost every weekend and competed in events like the district’s Sloops/Team race championship in Dallas, the district’s single-handed championships at Oklahoma State and also hosted the Alumni Regatta on October 2nd.

The team’s president, sophomore Petroleum Engineering major, Colin Fiek explained that the fall events were used as learning experiences for new team members, including the four freshmen who joined at the beginning of the fall semester.

Like all sport clubs, the Sailing Team is managed by students. This management includes everything from setting up practice times, to securing equipment and fundraising. The Sailing Team is one of several Sport Clubs that have chosen to utilize an endowment to help financially support their team.

Richard Thorp, a senior Accounting Major explained, “In a student led and student coached organization, fundraising is always an issue. Additional cash flow from the Endowment will allow us to keep dues low, bring in guest coaches and allow us to travel to bigger regattas across the country!” However, Thorp says the key focus of the endowment is sustainability. “We have former members from as far back as the 1980’s and all of us on the current team look forward to attending future alumni regattas to get to know the Sailing Team Alumni Members,” he explained.

The Sailing Team’s goal is to raise $25,000 over the course of two years. This goal will allow the endowment to generate a minimum annual cash flow of $1,000. After the $25,000 is raised, the endowment can continue to grow.

The team hosted its first fundraiser dedicated to the endowment

at the Houston Yacht Club on November 13th. “Our goal was to first re-connect with old members and make new connections with Aggies that did not necessarily sail in college. Second, we wanted to raise money for our endowment,” Fiek, explained.

The Texas A&M Sailing Team encourages any student with an interest in sailing to join, even those with no prior sailing experience. Thorp elaborated on this point saying, “We take a lot of pride in making a nationally competitive team available to anyone who is willing to put in the effort and time necessary!”

“Sailing is an expensive sport, and our team at A&M is extremely accessible for students who would not ordinarily ever get the chance to sail,” He explained. “This endowment will help ensure that this opportunity will be available for the generations of Aggies to come.” The team is planning a similar event at the Fort Worth Boat Club to be held this spring.

Next semester, the team expects to be competing almost every weekend. “Though our official district schedule has not been released, we expect another similar semester of traveling throughout Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana,” Fiek explained.

So what makes the Sailing Team successful? For Thorp, “The Sailing Team is successful because of current student dedication and the constant support of our former members.” Thorp continued, “Of course, I can’t say enough about the high level of support Texas A&M provides our team through Rec Sports and the Texas A&M Foundation. Through working with teams from other universities I have been able to see how blessed our team is to receive the amount of support we do. ”

endowmentsThe benefits!

SPORT CLUBS OFFER STUDENTS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to develop both leadership and athletic skills through collegiate competition at the state, regional and national level. Because Sport Clubs are administered by students, the team members are directly responsible for operating and managing a successful organization. Management includes maintaining the funds needed for expenses such as travel, equipment and facilities. Many of Texas A&M’s Sport Clubs have chosen to create an endowment account as a way to financially support their team presently and into the future.

Below are the endowments cureently used:

The Texas A&M Sailing Team Endowment.

TAMU Gymnastics Fund.

Texas A&M Cycling Team Endowment.

Texas A&M Men’s Rugby Team Endowment.
