1. THE BIRTH OF NAREN

On the 12th

January 1863, the auspicious day of Makara Sankaranthi, Bhuvaneshwari Devi

gave birth to a charming child. Considering him to be born through the blessings of Bireswar

Shivam, She named him as Bireswar. She affectionately called him Biley, a short for Bireswar.

Later he was formally given the name Narendranath Dutta. Every one called him just Naren.

2. A NAUGHTY BOY

As a child, Naren was very playful and naughty. He would tease his sisters and others at home.

Ofter it would become difficult to control him. On such occasions, his mother discovered that the

best way to bring him under control was to pour water on his head while uttering Shiva, Shiva.

He would then immediately calm down. When he was further told that if he did not check

himself, Lord Shiva would not admit him into Kailash, His divine abode, he would be grave and

silent at once.

3. AN INHERENT DESIRE TO HELP OTHERS

Many wandering monks and beggars came to the Datta household seeking food and clothing. If

the young Naren happened to see them, he would simply give away whatever articles he found

nearby--even the costly ones. Upset by this tendency of Naren, his people at home would often

lock him up in a room upstairs whenever they saw any beggar or monk coming that way.

Undeterred by this, Naren would call them up near the window and drop his clothes and other

things from there. This tendency to help others was thus inborn in him.

4. A COURAGEOUS CHARACTER

Naren had a daredevil attitude right from his early days. He would face everything with courage,

without caring for his personal comfort and safety. Once he went to attend a temple festival

along with his young cousin. As both walked on the road, suddenly a horse-drawn cart came

crashing with a tremendous speed, with its horse gone wild. Naren’s cousin was about to be

crushed under its wheels when Naren instantly rushed and pulled him out. It was quite a risky

action as the cart may have crushed both of them. When Naren’s mothers learnt of this incident

later, she blessed Naren, with tears of joy in her eyes, ‘Yes! Naren, always be a man!’

5. ‘GIVE ME LOVE AND DEVOTION’

Narendra started visiting Dakshineswar frequently. Meanwhile, Narendra’s father died

unexpectedly. This brought numerous hardships to everyone in the family. Extremely perturbed

about in the family. Extremely perturbed about it, Narendra requested Sri Ramakrishna to pray

to Mother kali to remove their sufferings. Sri Ramakrishna to pray to Mother Kali to remove their

sufferings. Sri Ramakrishna instead suggested that Narendra himself could go to the temple and

pray to Her. Narendra agreed. But when he entered the temple he forgot what he planned to ask

and instead prayed for devotion and knowledge. Sri Ramakrishna blessed him saying that

Narendra’s family would not lack in bare necessities of life.

Once Sri Ramakrishna had a divine vision of the seven great rishis mentioned in the Hindu

Scriptures. They were all lost in deep meditation in an intensely spiritual atmosphere. Just then,

a divine child, born of that intense atmosphere, moved slowly towards them. Putting its tender

arms around the neck of one of the sages, the child sweetly whispered

you also will have to come with me. The sage kept quiet but he expressed his approval through
