I have loved Italian madrigals since my studentdays, and “Recitation Book” for SaxophoneQuartet feels something like a madrigal collec-tion, but with a grand finale. My approach tocomposing is vocal, and the singing quality ofsaxophones is one of their fine strengths. emovements in this piece are relatively brief andintimate songs.

Much of my recent music draws its inspira-tion from the distant past. An old melody push-es open a door in my mind and a parallel worldor dream makes its way out. Each piece in thisset found its inspiration in that way.e title “Recitation Book” implies a set of

lessons. I don’t want to say explicitly what each“lesson” means, but the titles of the pieces circle

around the theme of death, which for me im-plies the passing of the old, and the coming ofthe new.

I have not only quoted a number of old mel-odies in “Recitation Book,” but two whole briefpieces as well. is first is J.S. Bach’s four-partchorale “Jesu, meine Freude,” and the second isan arrangement for the four saxophones of thefi ve-voiced madrigal “Ecco moriro dunque” byGesualdo di Venosa.

My acquaintance with the Masato KumoiSaxophone Quartet began several years agowhen I received a  in the mail. When record-ings come unbidden I am generally prepared

for something less than I want to hear. But thisrendition of “Mountain Roads” (my first com-

position for saxophone quartet) was the finestperformance of the piece that I had ever heard.Since then the Kumoi Quartet has performedthe piece many times, and they have promoted itwidely among players in Japan. In , MasatoKumoi commissioned me to write another quar-tet especially for his group, and you will hear thefirst performance of “Recitation Book” tonight. In May of , Masato Kumoi recorded a soloalto  (Simple Songs, Cafua Records), and in-cluded my “Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Pia-no.”is is a wonderful performance, and I amdeeply indebted to him for his brilliant play, andthe depth of his musical insight. I look forward

to many more years of our collaboration.  —David Maslanka
