I would like to wish every Lion a happy Thanksgiving or if this reaches you after, I hope that you had a great Thanksgiving! No matter which one it is, we are at that special time of year when our thoughts should be focused on what we are thankful for. Some people, however, are only wishing that they had enough food and a warm home. This is a great time to fulfill one of the Centennial Challenges and do a project to help fight hunger or even to help children have a gift that they can open on Christmas. No matter how little we may have, there are always some who have even less. Remember the old story of the man who felt bad he didn’t have shoes and then he meet the man who had no feet. When we help others, we forget our problems, or they just don’t seem as bad as they did before. Sue and I attended the 1st Multiple District “mini forum” in Mahnomen and it was a really great time with 36 different topics to choose from.! The only bad thing is it will be 2 years before another one is held. Our District did have 3 Lions who gave presentations. IPDG Steve Collins and PDG’s Wayne and Vickie Radloff did a awesome jobs in presenting topics on recruiting new members, the Quality Assurance Program (CEP) and also the Women’s Symposium Panel. Great job Lions! I believe we had 11 Lions that did attend this event. I hope you are making plans to invite prospective Lions to a new member night . Have a little fun, food, etc and tell and show them what Lions are all about! Remember that Lions are about having fun while making our community be a better place to live. Just think what your club could accomplish if you had more members to help with projects, or what new projects you could do!

Myself and several other 5m3 Lions

have just recently returned from the

inaugural edition of the MD5M

Northern Pride Lions Leadership Forum

in Mahnomen, Minnesota. It was a

great event, that was equal to or better than its bigger

brother, the USA Canada Leadership Forum, but without

the long travel or higher cost of attending it in Portland

next year. Our Northern Pride Forum is going to be held

every other year, to not cross with the Regional Lions

Leadership Institute which is held every two years also.

So, if you have a desire to learn more of what Lions is all

about or how to overcome some of the problems that are

plaguing all of our clubs, please plan to attend this new

Northern Pride event in 2018. You’ll certainly be very

glad that you did.

Thanksgiving is finally here in just a few days! A

chance to gather with family, to reflect on the good things

in life that we've been given and, of course, to eat too

much. But, while you're enjoying this wonderful holiday,

take just a moment to quietly give thanks for the

opportunity you've been given to help another person. If

you've realized it or not, that is exactly what a Lion does,

help someone else. Directly or indirectly, whether you met

them or not, you have made a meaningful difference in

someone's life; which puts a good feeling in your core,

and makes you actually understand why you're a Lion. So

be well, be thankful, and enjoy!

THIS IS ONE CONVENTION YOU WANT TO BE AT!

This will be the 6th year that scholarships will be given from the LITPC.

The most important aspect of the Youth Scholarship is to help a young person pursue his/her education and follow their dreams!! The LITPC (Lions International Trading Pin Club) takes great pride in fulfilling the motto of Lions Clubs International “WE SERVE”. During the SightFirst II Campaign, the Pin Traders contributed US $144,000 to LCIF. The Youth Scholarship Program is another example of the Pin Trader’s slogan, “Lions First”. The 5M Pin Traders Club along with 13 other Pin Trader Clubs from across the USA support the LITPC Scholarship Program. Selection of a scholarship recipient is based on academic achievement, an essay stating the student’s goals, a statement of reason(s) for applying and an overview of work, community and school service, and letters of recommendation. Applications and supporting documentation are to be completed and submitted to the pin trading club scholarship chairman named below by March 1, 2017. ALL graduating seniors who are the children/grandchildren of Lions, Lioness, or members of Leos Clubs are encouraged to participate in the Scholarship program. This does include students from Canada. Hall of Fame Award– Each District can award 1 per year. An application has be submitted to the DG in advance

of the convention and is voted on at the business meeting. The winner is announced and awarded at the MD5M

Convention in Bemidji. Do you have a member who qualifies for this award? If so, go to our 5M3 website– Forms.

Submit them before February 1, 2017 to DG Larry.

Al Jensen Award– This is an MD5M award that is given at the MD5M Multiple Convention in Bemidji on April

22nd. Only 2 are given in the Minnesota, Manitoba & NW Ontario area. Criteria for this award is listed at the 5M3

website under Forms.

MD5M Diabetes Dream Catcher Award– An accumulative donation of $1,000 to the Diabetes Foundation or

Camp Needlepoint or any other donation related to Diabetes will merit qualifications for an award. You need to

track your own club activity in this area and notify Lion Mary Snobl at [email protected] (507-629-4734) OR

Lion Bob Schirlinger at [email protected] (507-354-8940) to acquire the award.

Melvin Jones Fellowships– highest award that can be received by a Lion is the Melvin Jones Fellow (MJF). It was established in 1973 as a means to provide funds to Lions Clubs International (LCI) and also to establish the

highest form of recognition for dedication and humanitarian service. Today, the MJF provide 70% of the funds

provided for the LCI humanitarian programs such as relief to victims of earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, etc. The

fellowship is obtained for US $1000. and may be given to men or women , not necessarily Lions, in recognition for

their service. The recipient receives an inscribed plaque and lapel pin. Financing needs to be completed within a

five year period with a minimum of $100 in any one year. For those who have a MJF, a Progressive MJF (PMJF)

is available for each additional $1000 with the recipient receiving a lapel pin with a “level” gemstone. This award

can be presented at a club meeting or at our 5M3 Mid Winter Convention. More information regarding this award

can be found at the 5M3 website or by contacting the LCIF District Chairperson PDG John Myers

[email protected] (507-841-1573).

Lions MD5M Hearing Foundation Award– The MD5M Hearing Foundation gives the Fellowship award for

$1,000. This can be an accumulative donation to achieve the $1,000 goal. Contact PDG Wayne Radloff at

Leader Dogs Founders Tribute– This program allows clubs to honor an individual club member or event sponsor

for his or her consummate service, dedication and commitment to Lionism and Leader Dogs for the Blind. The

Founders tribute is available in three levels: Bronze- $500; Silver- $1,000; Gold- $2,500. The award recipient is

given a custom engraved Leader Dog Founders Tribute plaque and a commemorative Founders Tribute pin and

patch. The plaques, pins and patches are tailored for each level. Contact: Lion Deloy King at

[email protected] (507-831-5706).

Can Do Canines- “Top Dog” Award can be given to any club, member or non Lion’s member with a $500.

donation to Can do Canines. Contact: Lion Galen Engholm at [email protected] (507-249-4443).

Helen Keller Awards– are given to honor those who have distinguished themselves within your Lions Club for

outstanding commitment or service to your club or community. This is an excellent way to honor a Lion, Lioness,

non-Lion individual, business, or organization. A $1,000 donation to the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation (for

the MN Lions Eye Bank, Lions Children’s Eye Clinic, the MAC Center, the Fund to Prevent Blindness in Infants

and Children, or other Vision Foundation projects) allows the donor to present a Helen Keller Award. The award

recipient receives a beautiful plaque and pin, and the recipient’s name is displayed on the Helen Keller board in the

University of Minnesota Eye Clinic. Both the donor and the recipient have the satisfaction of supporting

worthwhile Lions projects. Established in 1992, more than 2000 Helen Keller Awards have now been bestowed on

deserving recipients. Contact PDG LeRoy Levorson at [email protected] (507-354-5781) OR PDG Vickie

Radloff at [email protected] (507-865-4732).

and their families. The awards look much like a military ribbon that would be worn on a uniform. Most have put

them on club vests or jackets. We also have a PNH pin for a donation of $25. The ribbon awards are red, white

and blue ribbon with a rectangular medal that says Project New Hope. Levels of the award are Gold medal at

$300., Blue medal at $600. and Red medal at $1200. Black & White ribbon with red medal & our dog tag symbol

The MN Lions Diabetes Foundation sponsored

“World Diabetes Days Across MN”

In 5M3, Diabetes Awareness Days were held in Jackson at Sunshine Foods, Windom at HyVee and Worthington Wal-Mart on Saturday, November 12, 2016. Over 475 individuals participated in the 3 locations where they took American Diabetes Association “At Risk Surveys”, visited with Certified Diabetes Educators, sampled nutritious recipes and received resource information. 236 individuals received blood glucose screenings. Over 35 “SUPER” Lion volunteers from 5M3 partnered with GREAT diabetes resource agencies including Community Wellness Partners (Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles Counties), U of MN Extension SNAP Ed; YMCA, Sanford Health, Southern Prairie Community Care, Open Door Health and Medica along with Windom Area Hospital, Windom Area Wellness Center, Prairie Rehabilitation, Anytime Fitness, Lewis Drug, and Southwest Mental Health. This was the second year our MLDF joined with diabetes resource agencies in providing community education. Our GOAL for 2017 is to have a Diabetes Awareness Day in every Lion Club Community. Please join our fight to stop diabetes!!

On October 29, 2016, a number of Lions from 5M3 attended the annual

Thanksgiving for Vision which celebrates the close cooperation between

the Minnesota Lions and the University of Minnesota's Department of

Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences. It was our privilege to hear

reports from the Doctors at the University who told us about their work,

research and accomplishments. I have attended this event for five years

and it is amazing to hear about the much advancement done in such a short

time.

One area which reveals the changes and progress in treatment is how

they are now doing corneal transplants. From taking the entire cornea to

transplant they are now taking a layer from the back of the donor cornea

for transplantation to the recipient.

This is what we as the Lions of Minnesota are supporting with our time

and money. We heard from the mother of a donor and a recipient of a

cornea. Their stories are significant as they encourage each and every one

of us to become donors and contributors to the Lions Vision Foundation.

A big Thank You to all who support these efforts because it is the gift of

sight is immeasurable to all of us. It is even more important

to someone who has had their sight restored by a corneal

transplant.

Greetings from 5M3 Lions KidSight,

KidSight is a nationwide program to safeguard the vision of children ages 6 months

through 6 years with a mission to ensure that eye screening and follow-up care is given

to all children because every child deserves to learn and see the world clearly.

Minnesota KidSight has received the $100,000 grant from MLVF and has applied for a $100,000 matching grant

from LCIF. This should be approved and received in January 2017. Because of this, the original $100,000 from

MLVF cannot be used to purchase the vision screening systems until the LCIF grant is approved. Therefore, the

Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screening systems that we will be receiving will not be ordered until January 2017. This

will delay starting our screening programs until approximately April by the time we receive the equipment and

training on the systems. Minnesota KidSight is also in the process of establishing a 501C3 tax free foundation to

handle all funds received for the Minnesota KidSight program.

In the mean time, I have been traveling and giving KidSight briefings/presentations at zone and club meetings to

spread the word about what the program is and how we hope it will work. I have presented at 4 zone meetings and

4 clubs so far and have 3 more clubs scheduled before the holidays. I would like to take this opportunity to Thank

those clubs that have already donated to the 5M3 KidSight Program. These funds will be critical to sustaining the

KidSight Program within the district. If your club would like to donate to this worthy cause, make the check

payable to 5M3 Lions and put KidSight in the memo field and mail it to me as the 5M3 KidSight Chairman.

Thank you for your support.

I got the word to get my article in for the December

news letter. So here I am trying to put my thoughts down

in words. All is well at Can-Do-Canines. On October

22nd we had our fall graduation and we now have

another 17 teams put together. On the 27th of Oct. we

held our fetching the ball fundraiser and as usual it was a

big success. Our Woofaroo was held in Sept. and we had

210 walkers that raised $52,000. What a great turn out.

As always we continue to need your help.

Made my way up to Canby the other night and had a

great time. If anyone else would like to have me come to

give your club a presentation, PLEASE don’t hesitate to

give me a call and I will do my best to get to your club.

Here is an article that was in the Howler that I would

like to share with you.

Gary Wenisch of Minneapolis, Minn. is not one to

let his circumstances slow him down. Despite living

with quadriplegia and using a wheelchair to get

around, Gary is always on the move, visiting local

parks, fishing or pursuing his passion for

photography. Gary's van, which is fully equipped

including a motorized ramp for his wheelchair, is

his vessel to pursue the independent life he

envisions. He admits that as he gets older, however,

it's becoming more difficult to perform daily tasks.

Gary experienced a spinal cord injury while diving

at age 22. A bilateral break to his spinal column left

him with the use of only one side of his body. Years

later, while living at the Courage Center, he was in

a serious car accident; the resulting fractures and

broken bones exacerbated his previous issues and

decreased his mobility even further. Fate finally

intervened to give Gary a break when he adopted a

Border collie mix named Ace in 2001.

As you know we were trying to work something out with Amtrak as to having a train car for Lions to go to Chicago for the 2017 Convention.

As of this update we have filled the dedicated Lions Car on the train. However if anyone is still interested in riding the train you can go out on line to the Amtrak web at: www.amtrak.com/tickets-reservations and sign up. The train number we are taking is 8/28 leaving at 8:00AM on Thursday June, 29, 2017 and we will be returning from Chicago on train 7, leaving at 2:15PM on Wednesday July 5, 2017. For some of you this may be a good opportunity for you to get on the train at a location more convenient to your home location. Unfortunately those that signed up to ride in the Lions Car must come to the St. Paul Amtrak Station to get onto the train as Amtrak was not willing to pick up a large group other that at one stop. We hope that those of you that may have been thinking about the train will do so fairly soon as we think the train may fill up fairly quick as for other Lions to the West and North of us may see this as a viable and reasonable way to get to Chicago for our Lions Centennial Celebration. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me. Best Regards, Lion Lynn Farley (651) 426-9407 [email protected]
