m r the principle of propulsion and inertia. Id est, propulsion occurs when their is wind in the

sail, and the boat has forward inertia (e.g. keeps going forward even after propulsion has been

    removed)

    -Practical Take Home points

-LUFF OR BACK - The sails need to be luffing or backed in order for the boat to stop-WINDWARD - It is easier to have the sails luff when pointing into or close to the wind

-WAIT - the boat wont stop instantly, it needs time to slow down

-FILL & GO - fill one/both sails, and keep sailing

    Elaboration of key points

-LUFF vs. BACK luffing takes longer to stop, but is often easier to execute (especially in

strong winds), backing stops you quickly, but can also make you go backwards

-APPROACH - very difficult when approaching running/broad reach, easier beam/close

reach, EASIEST CLOSE- HAULED to Irons.

-STOP QUICKLY? wind and wave conditions will affect how fast boat slows (big waves

slow you down quickly, pointing into a strong wind slows you down quickly)

-FILL the jib....you control where you go! port side......go to starboard (port tack)

DEMONSTRATION: sheet in/out, reaching, vs. close hauled vs. irons., using actual

boat, showing the propulsion force on the sails on different points of sail

    CONFIRMATION - LAND

Can students say the three key points? (LUFF to WINDWARD, WAIT, FILL & GO)

    BRIEFING H20

    THEME GAS & BRAKE

Objective: STOP (including at a particular place) and GO (in control

    1. STOP SIGN!

-Stop the boat at a mark

    Key Points:

-review approach CH, LUFF/BACK, WAIT (HOW LONG?), STOP at the sign (Orange

    mark)

-OUTCOME!!!!: Braking like a pro-stars give props to the mark while motionless

-Take off like a hot rod - FILL & GO

*setup marks so that no more than two boats at each mark to minimize collision risk

    2. RED LIGHT/GREEN LIGHT

    -Stopping starting on a whistle

-Boats all on same tack, following coach boat

    -Whistle....RED Light......brake like bugs bunny

-Whistle.....GREEN light......accelerate like the road runner

    Key Points-ibid

    -Try BACKING your sails

-Which way can you back your jib to avoid hitting joe cadet beside you?

    3. Drag Race

    -Challenge a boat!

    -3-2-1......STOP

    -3-2-1......GO

-Who has the best finesse on the brake?

    -Who has the most horsepower?

    Key Points

    -ibid

    -crew coordination is key

-correctly judging wind speed/waves will win

    SAFETY

-Any weather/geo hazards to worry about?

-Collisions......NOT NASCAR! (tiller towards trouble, crews lookout, always avoidcrashes)

-Stay on the same track (close to each other/ pace setting car/CB)

-Hail/wave paddle if in need of assistance

    -Yellow flag

    -Red Flag

    DEBRIEF

    -group debreif.....did we meet outcomes?

-did we hit all the key points

-individual debrief.....incoroporate in group, or talk one-on-one seperately, has outcome been

    achieved, why/ why not.

    Emergency Action Plan

    1. Persons in charge: Instructor responding to emergency on the water, raise red flag, the

instructor in charge of water sessions will respond and take charge of person(s) injured, and

ensure other personnel on water are safe (or a delegate)Senior Officer on land will be in charge of overall scene management

Officer manning the boatshed radio is the CALL PERSON, who will call EMS to scene, report to

Instructor and senior officer that EMS IS EN ROUTE, send personnel to meet EMS.

    2. Activitating EMS.

Via cell phone of senior officer on land, officer manning boatshed.

If no cell phone is present, telephone is located at the Park office, ~200m south.

    3. Emergency Numbers

    911 - all EMS services

Contact Numbers for personnel - carried by cadets escort officer, staff numbers on file at

    boatshed

    4. Medical information - contained in cadets swimming files, health card info carried by escort

officer (verfied by trg O at beginning of day)

    5. Directions to EMS- Simcoe Muskoka Geneva Park

Located approximately 2 km north of Casino Rama, on Rama Road, signed Simcoe Muskoka

    Geneva Park

    6. First Aid Kit - one in each coach boat, one in the boat shed.

    PLAN:

Once instructor assesses emergency and notifiies other personnel via visual, auditory, and radio

signals, all personnel will proceed to shore, and a head count will be performed. Instructor in

charge of medical emergency will administer First Aid, all other instructors/officers will assist in

assuring timely EMS response and ensuring all other souls return to land safely.
