This term the Reception class have been learning about recycling and water. We

looked at recycling in school and at home and made posters to encourage people to

recycle, reduce and re-use. Linking back to our last topic on transport, the chil-

Year 1 Maths-In Maths this term we have been telling the time to the hour and half past an hour.

We have also been finding half and quarter of a shape and numbers.

English– The children have been writing recounts about the school trip and trips with their

families.

Science– This term we have been learning about plants. We enjoyed a trip to Knightshayes

where we explored the gardens, planted seeds and made leaf rubbings. In school we have

been able to identify different plants, trees and flowers.

DT- We have been studying different fruits and vegetables and creating still life drawings

of them. We have also been writing instructions ready to make a fruit salad.

Topic– Our Topic work has been about Brazil. We have been finding differences and simi-

larities between the UK and Brazil. We have also looked at plants and fruits grown in Brazil.

Plus making our own weather forecasts.

ICT– We have been using the computers to make our own graphs showing the classes fa-

vourite animals and colours .

Year 2 Oh we do like to be beside the seaside!

This half term we have all been enjoying learning about seasides. We had a fantastic

day on Exmouth beach, building sandcastles, making sand sculptures, writing postcards,

meeting the life guards and eating delicious ice-creams!!

We have been enjoying reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s

Lunch’ and other stories in this series. We have written some

newspaper reports about Mr. Grinling the Lighthouse keeper,

and what he did to scare away the naughty seagulls!!

In DT we also designed and made a Lighthouse keepers Picnic,

which we then got to all enjoy eating on our school field.

In History we have learnt lots of facts about what it was like to go to the seaside over 100

years ago. We have found out about entertainment at the seaside, what people wore

to go for a swim, how people travelled there, and many interest-

ing facts.

Did you know that people used to get changed into their swim-

wear in a ’bathing machine’ and ice-creams were called

’Hokey Pokey’s’?

Countries day was great fun!! We

learnt lots about Mexico. We found Mexico on the world

map and talked about what we thought the weather was

like. We learnt a few Spanish words and tasted some dif-

ferent fruits that grow in Mexico. We also got to try a few

other tastes of Mexico, like nachos, salsa, guacamole and

some Chilli Chocolate! Some of us thought it was really

hot and others said they could hardly taste the chilli!!

We listened to Mexican music and tried a bit of dancing!!

We all had a go at making a ’Mexican Gods Eye’ from

wool and craft sticks. They were quite fiddley, but all look really good!

We have had a fun half term, and have enjoyed our whole year in year 2.

Thank you for all your help at home this year. Have a lovely time during the summer holi-

days. Mrs Moss and Mrs Wright.

Year 3 Our final half term in Year3 has been extremely busy. We have been on our school trip to Knightshayes,

had our Nugget Treat, Countries Day, a camping experience on the field, completed the pond project,

Sports Day and spent an hour in the new class room, ready for next year.

Here are some pictures of our experiences during the last half term.

Mrs Hayman and Miss Cookson

have thoroughly enjoyed teach-

ing and working with us this

year. They would like to thank

all of our parents for their help

and support throughout the

year. Goodbye and enjoy Year

4.

It has been another busy half term in Year 4!

In Science we have been learning about Habitats and in English we

have been writing about woodland creatures. To enrich our expe-

rience and learning in these areas, we have really enjoyed visiting

the woods at Sandy Lane in Uffculme and going to Stover Park.

Our Inca topic has continued this half term and we have enjoyed learning about the Andes Moun-tains in Geography. In Art we have been looking at Inca patterns and have made Inca-style print boards. We have then produced a wonderful whole class art work by printing onto fabric. This is now on display above the photocopier in the Key Stage 2 area.

As part of our DT bridges project, Mr Dentith who is a construction engineer, came into school and spoke to us about bridge design. He then left us with the challenge of making model bridges out of art straws in small groups. When he re-turned a week later, we had made 8 fan-tastic bridges which we then had great fun testing to see how much weight they could hold. All of our bridges did really well but the challenge was finally won by Golden Bridges Ltd (Jonah, Aduka, Isla and Josephine) and CBRM Construction Company (Kisa, Kathryn, Freddie and Har-ry R).

We have really enjoyed Sports Day at the top school and learning about Peru

for Countries Day when we made quipus, pan pipes, potato prints and wrote a

postcard to Paddington Bear from Aunt Lucy in Peru.

Well done to Luke, Isabelle and Makan who were presented with end of year awards for

engagement, progress and contribution at the presentation evening last week. A well done

also to Keira and Will who were awarded with special leaves during last weeks achievement

assembly for improved learning. Miss Andrews and Mrs Morgan would also like to take this

opportunity to say a very big well done to everyone in Year 4 - you have all had a tremen-

dous year and we have thoroughly enjoyed teaching you (we might even miss you next year

as well)!!!!!

Everyone in Year 4 would like

to say a very big goodbye and

good luck to Molly Dyer who

is moving to Wales in the

summer holidays.

We would like to thank Mrs Hansford for organising and helping us during our practice, we would also like to thank the rest of the school and all the parents who came to watch our performance. We had fun making bread for our lunch making a sharing plate full of nice and healthy things, then we made some Lemon Granita for dessert it tasted like a Slush Puppy. For our main we had some Pasta Shells in sauce. We had fizzy cranberry flavoured water that actually tasted like Red Wine . Lastly we had chocolates! We made them ourselves 2 days before, they were white, dark and milk chocolate flavoured disks. We wore red, green and white clothes and even face paint and make-up! By Seth and Daniel

Bird Boxes and Insect Hotels

This month, at Top School we have been making bird houses and insect hotels. We used professional tools like band saws, hammers, nails, electric drills including pillar and a hand saw. We are going to put our bird houses and insect hotels out in to our wooded area to help our environment grow. Also, special thanks to Mr Kemp and Mr Bale for letting us use their tools and facilities. We all had a really exciting time! By Riley and Ava

Year 6 have been having lessons with

Mrs Cheetham discovering loads of

Uffculme Top School Taster Day

The Year Sixes went to top school to see what it would be like for them in Septem-

ber and to meet their new tutor.

Some people were happy with their tutor, some people were not so happy. By the

end of the day everybody was happy because they had made new friends.

We were all familiar with top school before we went, so we knew most of the teachers already and we

knew were most of the rooms were.

Lots of our tutor teachers had never taught at that school before, so they will be new as well as us.

we hope we have represented Mid Devon well!

The Year 6 Trip

On The 14th July, we used the money that we raised from the fiver challenge to go on a school trip to

Torquay’s Riviera Centre. We went on the train to Torquay (which we paid for) we then walked for

about 10 minutes. When we arrived at the swimming pool we immediately got changed and jumped

in and had a lot of fun (especially with the wave machine). After, we had our pre-ordered lunch and

ice cream, went to the park, and then rushed back to the station.
