Requiring'theStateBoardof Educationtoestablisha processfor thecontinualreviewofnewlyproposedcorehighschoolcoursestomeettherequirementsfor industrystandardsandto addressemergingacademicandlabormarketneeds;requiringthatacurriculumreviewcommittee,whosemembershipis approvedbytheWorkforceFloridaBoard,reviewall newlyproposedcoresecondarycourse~;requiringthatthesubmissionandreviewofnewlyproposedcorecoursesbeconductedelectronicallywitha 60daywindowforapprovalordenial.

Thisactamendss. 1003.492by:. RequiringtheAgencyfor WorkforceInnovation(AWl)to identifyappropriateindustry

certificationsbasedonthehighestnationalstandardsavailable;requiringtheDepartmentof EducationtoworkwithWorkforceFloridaandEnterpriseFloridatocollectandanalyzeacademicachievementandperformancedataofstudentsparticipatinginacademies.

Thisactamendss. 1003.493by:· Definingcareerandprofessionalacademiesasresearch-basedprogramsthatintegratea

rigorousacademiccurriculumwithanindustry-specificcurriculumaligneddirectlytoapriorityworkforceneedestablishedbytheregionalworkforceboard;requiringthatstudentsreceivea standardhighschooldiploma,thehighestavailablecertification,andopportunitiestoeampostsecondarycredit;statingthatexistingcareereducationcoursescanserveasthebasisfor thecreationofa newacademy.

Thisactrepealss. 1003.49~· (CareerHigh-SkillOccupationalInitiativeforCareerEducation[CHOICE]academies),but

stipulatesins. 1003.493thattheOkaloosaCountySchoolDistrictCHOICEInstitutesshallserveinanadvisoryroleandshalloffertechnicalassistancefora three-yearperiodbeginningJuly1J 2007, asdistrictscreatenewcareerandprofessionalacademies.

Thisactamendss. 1011.62by requiring'· theFloridaEducationFinanceProgram(FEFP)toprovidea bonusweight(0.3FTE)forthe

fundingofstudentsenrolledinanindustry-certifiedcareerandprofessionalacademyandwhoareawardeda certificateofsuccessfulcompletion.

Thisactcreatessection1003.496,FloridaStatutes,toofferhighschoolstudentinternshipsbasedonpartnershipsdevelopedwithemployerswithinthecommunitiesservedbythedistrictschoolboard.Aninternshipmustbecoordinatedwiththecareergoalsofeachstudentparticipantandincludea studentevaluationeachsemesterbytheemployerofferingtheinternshipto monitortheacademicvalue.

Studentsintheninth,tenth,eleventh,or twelfthgradesmayparticipatein theprogramif theyhaveaminimumweightedgradepointaverageof2.0. Studentparticipantsmaynotberequiredto workmorethan20hoursperweekduringtheinternship.An internshipmustbeat least8 weekslongbutmaynotlastmorethan20consecutiveweeksduringanyschoolyear.Eachstudentmayparticipateinoneinternshipperschoolyear. .
