Rebecca Moses is an artist with a well-earned respect in a multitude of creative disciplines. She is a creative visionary and fashion dignitary. Her most prolific work, however, lies in the field of fashion illustration. Rebecca’s growing presence in the world of fashion illustration is reflected by her collaborations with leading fashion forces, such as Franca Sozzani at Italian Vogue, Vera Wang, and designer footwear company, Fratelli Rosetti. Her book, “A Life of Style”, published by Monacelli Press in 2011, is a showcase of her creative vision and highlights her importance as a style force. Refined yet playful, Rebecca’s chic figures dance colorfully across the page breathing life and motion into every environment in which they live. In her most recent collaboration, she is working closely with MAC Cosmetics to create a series of delightful make-up bags and accessories.

Rebecca burst onto the international fashion scene in the early 1990s, captivating the European fashion landscape with her brilliantly sophisticated sense of style, playful use of color and unique perspective. Very neatly eclipsed by the success of her fashion and home products collections, Rebecca’s talent as an illustrator extends from her conceptually drives ideas and refreshing technique. Bergdorf Goodman quoted, “Her color palette is perfect for the times – rich, subtle, yet unexpected”.

Rebecca’s clients also include Vogue Italia, Vogue Nippon, Marie Claire Italia, Elle Japan, ICON Magazine, Random House, La Furla and Vanity Fair Italia. Rebecca’s ongoing work with Franca Sozzani dominates the Vogue.it website with everything from Tarot Card illustrations, Vogue Dolls series for the blog, as well as a creatively executed animated fashion short for Spring/Summer 2012. In addition to her editorial work, Rebecca designed a series of illustrated chairs for the Italian furniture brand Kartell in 2011. She is working on an ongoing basis with Colin Cowie, the famed wedding planner creating illustrations for his website and coffee table book. Rebecca’s second book for Monacelli Press (Random House) is due for release in 2013.

Rebecca currently works and resides between New York City and the Piedmont region of Italy with her two sons and their dog, George.

REBECCA MOSES Creative Direction and Illustration

Did you always want to be an artist? I always wanted to design and create.

Tell us about your technique. I love gauche-watercolor. I think it is all about the ability to create color. There is a dreamlike quality to watercolor... But in the last couple of years I have fallen in love with markers and pen. But I have learned to blend markers in a way to give me a similar movement of color that I do with paint and now I use all the mediums together.

Describe your creative process. Color is fundamental, moods are exaggerated, body language strong, and the attitudes are large. If I am illustrating space and interiors I like to create exaggerated, out of proportion attitudes. I think that imperfection is always so captivating.

Do you listen to music while you paint and if so, what music most sparks your creativity? I am stimulated by many things, sometimes music, sometimes silence. I love Cole Porter.

How has your artwork changed or developed over the years? Yes, it has become more humorous and spirited. I feel very close to the characters I create. I like being able to laugh at oneself. This is why I love maximizing each characters style and mannerisms.

Tell us one thing about you that nobody knows. I try to laugh at least once a day.

When did you first fall in love? When I met Giacomo.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?   Cecil Beaton’s illustrations, Cole porter music and a lifetime in the world of high style.

Describe your work environment/studio. Its’ a studio on wheels. I never depend on a fixed space. I need to be in a relaxed space and feel comfortable. But it could even be a train to Napoli or a plane to Japan.

If you had one day left on earth, how would you spend the day? With the people I love, doing something wonderful!

What would the title of your autobiography be? Live your dreams, no excuses.

What could we expect to find in your refrigerator if we took a peek right now? Wine < cheese milk

If you were a superhero, what superpowers would you posses? I would like to be super healthy!

What is currently playing on your Ipod? Pink martini, Adele, Bobby Short, Lady Gaga and Mozart

If you won $50 million in the lottery, how would you spend the money? I would first take care of my family and then who knows?

What is your idea of the perfect weekend? Hanging with the family, cooking, entertaining friends, watching an old movie and sketching!

Where was your last travel destination? Back home to Italy.

If you were mythical creature, what creature would you be? A mermaid.

If you were granted 3 wishes, what would they be? Great health, love and creativity ability for all that I love.

What is your greatest indulgence? My children.

Who are your favorite artists? Ceceil Beaton, Jacque Henri Lartigue, Modigliani, Man Ray, Giacometti,

Who is/was your mentor? Life has been my mentor.

What are you currently working on? I am working toward my first art show in New York City.

What is the best project you ever worked on? Every project I accept is a privilege to accept and create. Each one is challenging and exciting in their own way. This makes all of the projects I work on a very unique experience.

What is your mantra in life? Live each day as if it is a gift!
