Within West Sussex, we recognise that safeguarding children and stopping Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is everyone’s responsibility, and crosses many different services and disciplines.

As such we need to ensure staff, and educational establishments, have the tools and resources available to them in order to educate young people on the dangers of CSE, and work proactively to prevent them becoming involved with potential perpetrators.

Research shows that the most effective way to stop exploitation is to educate young people, families and professionals on the dangers of CSE and how to avoid it. Schools have a key opportunity to educate their pupils using a preventative approach through the PSHE curriculum. This learning can be reinforced throughout key stages to ensure that the level of understanding is checked and key messages are reinforced.

Real Love Rocks is a CSE prevention programme that focuses on helping all children and young

people to think about and discuss relationships, what they are, and how to keep happy and safe in them, whether that’s now or in the future. It is fully interactive with fun, animated videos that support the content and learning. It can be delivered to groups, or classes, as part of PSHE or used on a one-to-one basis. It is usually run over four weeks, with one hour a week delivery, however this can easily be adapted to meet the needs of the individuals. There are two programmes that can be followed, aimed at primary or secondary school aged children.

The Primary School programme is aimed at year 6 students and covers:

• Healthy and Equal Relationships

• Grooming

• Keeping Safe

• Online Safety

The Secondary School programme is aimed at students in years 7-9, but can be adapted and used with older young people, and covers:

• Healthy Relationships (including consent)

• Grooming and Child Sexual Exploitation

• Keeping Safe

• The impact of watching pornography and sexting

As a result of the positive feedback the LSCB now offer training on both versions of the programme and details can be found below. The training costs £95 per place and this includes a full days training on either the secondary or primary edition, plus the booklet with session plans and a USB containing all interactive materials. It is intended that one nominated staff member from each school attends and then supports the roll-out with their provision.

• October 24th at County Hall North

• November 21st at County Hall Chichester

There is also an option for schools to commission Barnardos to deliver the training direct within their provision. This costs £560 for delivery of 4x Real Love Rocks sessions, per class of students.
