The work of 5 distinguished pho-tographers is interpreted by 7 vi-sual artists in the exhibition Holes in the Wall at Dearborn’s Padzieski Art Gallery, July 12 through August 10.There is a free Opening Party & Re-

ception, Thursday, July 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., plus a special free Art & Appetizers Gallery Talk, Thursday, August 2 (6-8 p.m.).Over the last several months five

Detroit-area photographers have ventured out to capture the images and essences of some of the most iconic and beloved Holes in the Wall diners and restaurants in Greater Detroit. A term of affection, a 'hole in the wall' references those spe-cial, often overlooked destinations where hot food is served in a more personal, non-corporate atmo-sphere, where the conversations can be casual and friendly - even passionate – and where friendships can be made to last - or sometimes fade. Nearly 50 images representing

eight different establishments have been lovingly produced in this exhibition. Photographers Tim Tonachella

(Farmers, at top) Jim Aho (Greene's, 3rd down), Danny Rebb, Michael Kearney and Glenn Kujansuu along with painters Sharlene Wel-ton (Farmers, 2nd), John Lange (Greene's, bottom), Jack Noremac, Carrie Care Wheeler, Elizabeth Gullikson and Joe Hosler come to-gether to present this special col-laborative exhibit featuring the fol-lowing Holes in the Wall: Farmer's Restaurant – Detroit; Becky's Nip 'N Tuck Diner – Berkley; Greene's Hamburgers - Farmington Hills; Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips – Detroit; Duly's Place - Detroit; Hygrade Deli – Detroit; Bates Ham-burgers – Livonia and Red Hots Co-ney Island - Highland Park.Regular Gallery Hours: Tuesday

through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and select weekends. For more info, see dcacarts.org, or call (313) 943-5377.The Padzieski Art Gallery is lo-

cated in the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, located at 15801 Michigan Ave., in Dearborn.

SUMMER IN THE CITY

Art from Around the World

Very First Photo Safari at the Detroit ZooNo need to travel to Africa for this safari. The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS)

is teaming up with Woodward Camera to offer shutterbugs of all ages the oppor-tunity to exhibit their photography skills and compete to win prizes. Photo Safari will be held the weekend of July 14 and 15, from 9 m. to 5 p.m., at the Detroit Zoo. Participation in this inaugural event is free with Zoo admission; guests who pay $20 for early admission as well as DZS members can enter at 8 a.m.

“Photography can be both a challenging and rewarding adventure, especially when it comes to nature and wildlife,” said Ron Kagan, DZS executive director and CEO. “With 2,000 magnificent animals of 230 species, the Detroit Zoo is the perfect place to practice, hone and showcase these skills.”

Photos taken during this two-day event will be eligible for prizes; up to five im-ages per person may be submitted to the Woodward Camera team for consider-ation. Suggested photo themes include animal welfare/rescued animals/conserva-tion species, human-animal connection, mammals, amphibians/reptiles and birds/butterflies.

The event will also offer Photo Safari participants the opportunity to test out new photography equipment. Woodward Camera is providing $300,000 worth of cam-eras and lenses from vendors such as Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma and Sony for guests to check out for a two-hour period.

Photos taken during the event must be submitted to woodwardcamera.com by July 23 to be eligible for prizes. Finalists will be voted on by the Detroit Zoo’s Face-book followers the week of July 30, and first-, second- and third-place winners will be announced the week of August 6. The Detroit Zoo is located at the intersec-tion of Woodward Ave. and the I-696 Service Dr. in Royal Oak.

Last Michigan Survivor of U.S.S. Indianapolis SinkingThe sinking of the U.S.S. In-

dianapolis rates as one of the greatest tragedies in the his-tory of the U.S. Navy. On July 30, 1945, the Indy was en route from making a top secret de-livery: the primary compo-nents for the atomic bomb that

would be used on Hiroshima. In the middle of a sweltering night on the Philippine Sea, the Indy was hit by two Japanese torpedoes and sunk in 12 minutes. Of her crew of 1,127, only 317 would be rescued four and a half days later, with 19 survi-vors from Michigan. Today, 17 Indy survivors remain, including Richard Thelen, the last remaining Michigan survivor. On Saturday, July 7 from 12 to 3 p.m., Thelen will be at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum for a screening of a recent documentary about the discovery of his ship’s wreckage. Afterwards, he’ll talk about the sinking and the dramatic battle for survival that claimed the lives of most of his shipmates. Admis-sion to the program and the museum is free for all, all the time. For more info call the Museum at (313) 833-5538 or see detroithistorical.org. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located at 100 Strand Drive on Belle Isle.

36th Metro Youth DayLaydell Harper

The 36th Annual Metro Youth Day is set for Wednesday, July 11. For those readers that don’t know about Youth Day; it’s a day of food, fun, games and meeting local celebrities that are willing to spend time with young people. It’s a giant picnic for kids and for many of them, the only picnic they will have all summer. But local businessman and founder, Ed Deeb has made this day truly their day, and a very special day. “Metro Detroit Youth Day works hard to inspire our youth to do the

most good. The Michigan Food and Beverage Association (MFBA) and Michigan Business and Professional Association (MBPA) which I founded, have been working very hard to improve our communities and the state of our children,” said Deeb. “At this event, we invite nu-merous dignitaries, leaders, sports stars, entertainment, and others to join us at this popular and colorful event.” “We have recently established College Row where about a dozen

colleges and universities participate in the event as well,” comments Deeb. “Also we give out more than 120 college scholarships each year and honor undergraduates for academic achievement and com-munity service in the tri-county area.”This gigantic event, held at the Belle Isle Athletic Field has grown

from a few hundred kids to nearly 40,000 kids that are expected at this year’s event. Here’s just a few of the events they’ll enjoy; Water Stations, safety relay races, pie eating contest, horse/buggy rides, De-troit Lions football clinic, live entertainment and much more. Lunch is also included and it’s all free and all for kids. Metro Youth Day will be held July 11, on Belle Isle at the Athletic Field

from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Also, on Friday, July 6, Ed Deeb, Founder and Chairman of Metro Youth Day will be honored at a street naming ceremony at the Athletic Field on Belle Isle from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Belle Isle State Park is located on E. Jefferson Ave., near Mt. El-

liott, in Detroit.

(313) 962-4555The performance of From

Mao to the MET by basso artist Hao Jiang Tian is set for this coming Saturday at 7 p.m., July 7, at the Selig-man auditorium on 13 Mile and Lahser. Tian has performed with

the Metropolitan Opera Company for many years and is highly recommended by Placido Domingo. For information, check mi-

[email protected]. The Detroit Symphony Or-

chestra will be appearing at the Ford House at the lake-side lawn of the enchant-ing estate in Grosse Pointe with fireworks. This will be taking place

on the 13th and 14th of July. On those evenings, the grounds open at 6 p.m., the performance begins at 8 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.Kerrytown Concert House

is featuring a relatively newer category of music titled WORLD. On Sunday,

July 15 at 8 p.m., it will feature Aron Kaufman’s Dream Ensemble. This past year, Mr. Kaufman has formed this new group hoping to fulfill a life-long dream to perform concerts and record CDs of music he has been composing the past 30 years, including many new works that have never been performed. His debut performance

with his Dream Ensemble at the Thread Festival in Ypsilanti this past March was enthusiastically re-ceived by a packed house. Mr. Kaufman’s work is in-fluenced by the modal ap-proach of Miles Davis, the folk-jazz of Oregon, the Cuban groove of Mongo Santamaria and numer-ous rock, funk and soul artists. His compositions feature a strong rhythmic foundation with evocative melodies. Kaufman is par-ticularly intrigued with odd meter landscapes. His

work is full of soul and sur-prise and features strong motifs, dynamic group in-terplay, and inspired im-provisation. Mr. Kaufman’s lifelong quest to expand his musical horizons led him to explore a brand-new instrument, the Rav Vast steel hand drum made in Russia. Kaufman will pre-mier some new pieces at Kerrytown on this extraor-dinary instrument. This is a very good time

for those who are thinking of buying subscription tick-ets. Currently, you might find them at lower prices than otherwise expected. The programs for the com-ing year are exceptional. With the concert season

being mostly over, the time has come for me to check across the border at the Stratford Festival, which I tend to find always ex-ceptional. One of the plays that I am considering is by American playwright

Eugene O’Neill, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. This play deals with problems involving morphine addic-tion and the disease of tu-berculosis. O’Neill in his time had per-

sonal experience with both problems, as his mother suffered from the addiction to morphine which devel-oped after difficult child-birth, and Eugene O’Neill himself had personal expe-rience with tuberculosis. I am also considering

Shakespeare’s The Tempest. From what I have seen in the previews, the produc-tion should be exceptional. And, perhaps, finally, a

play that was written in the 1970's as science fic-tion, Rocky Horror Show. I am not completely sure what I will be walking into, but it should be interesting as well as entertaining. For more information

about other programs at Stratford, see stratfordfes-tival.ca.

SPORTING LIFE

Tigers at the All-Star BreakBy George B. Eichorn

It’s nearing mid-season for the De-troit Tigers and the rest of the major league clubs. To no one’s surprise and on the heels of a confidence shat-tering losing streak, the Tigers are faced with the prospect of missing the post-season playoffs for a fourth consecutive year.Manager Ron Gardenhire is com-

mended for getting the most out of a roster that more resembles the To-ledo Mud Hens. In fact, at mid-point of the first half, the club was just a couple games out of the A.L. Central Division lead of the Cleveland Indi-ans. Gardenhire had the team winning

games they probably should have lost – mostly at Comerica Park – us-ing bunts, singles, base-stealing, running on pitches and other ‘small ball’ tendencies. But alas, a season-ending injury to

future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabre-ra and a murderous road schedule in June and July has caught up with Gardy and the Tigers. Only a win last Sunday over Toronto halted more misery as it broke the club’s season-long 11 – game losing skid. The Tigers certainly have some ex-

citing players and the farm system bodes well for the future. Yet fans are staying away in startling numbers this season at Comerica Park, costing owner Chris Ilitch millions of dollars in ticket sales, concessions, parking

and assorted revenue streams. On the field, the Tigers are led by

right-fielder Nicholas Castellanos (pictured) who belted a grand slam home run last Sunday and through press time leads the club with 13 HR and 53 RBI. He’s hitting a solid .310. Nick is certainly trade bait for a

team in search of offense but chances are GM Al Avila will hang tight with his best healthy hitter.Other possible moves at the trade

deadline by Avila could involve closer Shane Greene (2-5, 4.03 ERA), starting pitcher Francisco Liriano (3-4, 3.99 ERA) and shortstop Jose Iglesias (.273, 30 RBI) and maybe catcher James McCann (.230, 22 RBI). Rumors still swirl around start-

ers Michael Fulmer and Matthew Boyd that either could be dealt away should the Tigers receive as com-pensation highly-targeted prospects from another team(s).For now it’s a chance for the young-

sters to prove their major league val-ue as the Tigers play a more exciting game of baseball than we are used to. The long-ball sluggers are no lon-

ger prominent on the roster and the chances for a winning club seem a few years away. The best highlights remaining may
