Introduction

Hi, and welcome to My Savvas Training. In this tutorial, you will learn how to use ReadyGEN® to teach close reading to your students and help them apply close reading strategies to complex texts.

What is Close Reading?

Students must be able to read and comprehend complex grade-level text in order to be college and career ready. Teaching students how to read texts closely is one way to help them gain a clear understanding of the texts and content areas. Close reading is focused, sustained reading and rereading of a text for the purpose of understanding key points, gathering evidence, and building knowledge.

Close Reading in ReadyGEN®

Close reading is an integral part of instruction in ReadyGEN®. Students read texts closely during whole- and small-group instruction in order to practice and master the process. Students then apply this process during independent reading.

Whole-Group Close Reading

Students engage in multidraft reading of challenging texts in ReadyGEN®. During the second reading of ReadyGEN® texts, teachers guide students through a whole-group close reading of the text. Students focus on specific parts of the text while rereading, answering focused text-dependent questions, and having text-based conversations.

During whole-group close reading, ReadyGEN® students have the opportunity to deconstruct the text and examine individual words, sentence structure, and the development of ideas. This close examination of the text helps students to gain deep understanding of the content, text structure, and vocabulary.

Text-Dependent Questions

Asking text-dependent questions is one of the most important parts of close reading. ReadyGEN® text-dependent questions focus on key ideas and details, vocabulary, and craft and structure. Students must return to the text to find information or evidence to answer these questions.

Vocabulary

ReadyGEN®’s generative vocabulary approach is incorporated across lessons during guided close reading. Students are taught words in clusters, rather than in isolation, with a focus on words that are critical to understanding the text.

Benchmark Vocabulary words are important for understanding concepts within a text. These are highlighted within the Benchmark Vocabulary section of each lesson. Look to the Benchmark Vocabulary Routines at the back of your Teacher’s Guide for support on how to teach the meanings of these words. The Vocabulary to Unlock Text section at the beginning of each unit module lists all of the Benchmark Vocabulary and related words for the anchor and supporting texts.

During guided close reading in ReadyGEN®, students are also introduced to By-the-Way Words. By-the-Way Words are sophisticated or unusual words for known concepts that can be stumbling blocks to comprehending a text.

Small-Group Close Reading

The first step of Small Group Time in ReadyGEN® is Focused Independent Reading. Focused Independent Reading uses self-selected texts to motivate the reader and provide students with opportunities to practice what they learned during the whole-group close reading lesson. To ensure purposeful independent reading, students are assigned a process focus and a strategy focus. Students will apply both focus points while closely reading their self-selected texts.

Based on student performance during whole-group close reading, you will determine which small-group scaffolds or extensions are appropriate for students in your classroom.

Scaffolding Close Reading Instruction

ReadyGEN® offers both strategic support and extensions within close reading lessons.

Suggestions and resources for scaffolding close reading instruction are incorporated throughout the Teacher’s Guide to support all students with close reading.

Refer to the Scaffolded Strategies Handbook for deeper, targeted support, tools, and useful strategies for English language learners, struggling readers, and accelerated readers. The Unlock the Text section provides evidence-based scaffolds and strategies for close reading of every anchor and supporting text.

Sleuth

Sleuth, a magazine-style reader, is a collection of short, high-interest selections used to teach and practice the steps of close reading during ReadyGEN® small-group instruction.

As students work through the Super Sleuth Steps to close reading, they learn to:

• Look for clues to help them answer the questions being asked;

• Ask their own questions based on their reading;

• Make a case for their argument by citing the evidence they gathered; and

• Prove it by completing performance tasks.

Close Reading Digital Resources

Savvas Realize provides access to ReadyGEN®’s close reading digital components, including the Teacher’s Guide, Scaffolded Strategies Handbook, and anchor texts.

You also have access to videos that demonstrate how to read closely and cite evidence in the text.
