READING THE RECEPTOR

Presented by Dr. Daniel Kalish

KALISH INSTITUTEEducational Webinar

1. Explore the three types of neurotransmitter imbalances:

• Type One - Deficiency Types

• Type Two - Damage Types

• Type Three - Genetic Types

1. Neurotransmitter Deficiency: Stress, poor diet, poor digestion, drug depletion, supplement depletion

2. Damaged Neurons: Toxins or physical trauma

3. Genetic Factors:Bad genes

THREE TYPES OF IMBALANCE

A. Stress: High stress levels kill neurons, shrinking brain

B. Lack of nutrients from poor diet or poor digestion: lack of protein, Vitamin B6 or other nutrients leads to insufficient neurotransmitter production

C. Depletion from drugs or supplements: Anti-depressant drugs and single amino acids deplete neurotransmitters

TYPE ONE: THREE PRIMARY SOURCES OF DEFICIENCY PROBLEMS

•It's quite clear that chronic stress is related to depression – a common feature of depression is an excess release of cortisol into the blood

• Some neuroscientists and psychiatrists are now suggesting that the major changes in serotonin and other neurotransmitters seen in depression are not the cause of depression, but secondary to changes in the stress response

• Contrary to traditional ideas, the adult brain does make new neurons, but only in very restricted areas - for example, the hippocampus of an adult rat makes between 5000-10 000 new neurons each day

• Joe Herbert’s lab in Cambridge has showed that cortisol dramatically decreases the rate new brain cells are made, so perhaps some of the adverse effects of stress are related to fewer brain cells being created in the hippocampus

HIGH STRESS HORMONES IMPACT BRAIN

• Average American diet easily leads to vitamin and mineral deficiency states

• Quality of protein, amount of protein, vegetarian or vegan diets all contribute to amino acid deficiencies that impact both brain chemistry and detox pathways

• Even if eating the right foods, malabsorption from leaky gut is common and protein is not absorbed properly

LACK OF NUTRIENTS FROM POOR DIET OR POOR DIGESTION

• Prescription drugs – anti-depressants, ADD medications, anti-anxiety medications

• Recreational drugs – meth, cocaine (even alcohol can deplete dopamine)

• Individual amino acids – tyrosine, phenylalanine, 5-HTP, tryptophan

• The program actually works!

• 500 doctors using it, not just Dr. Dan

• 2012 graduates have ordered $1.12 Million in labs/supplements

• Shows you where to start with each new patient

• Helps you increase your income by streamlining your business and increasing lab and supplement sales

• I work 8.3 hours/week and generate over $40,000/month - you can work towards this over the course of several years

WHAT IS THE KALISH METHOD MENTORSHIP ALL ABOUT?

• Great for… • New grads just getting started, or • Folks new to functional medicine, or• Successful practitioners looking for a change

• Half of our practitioners are going through a life transition:• Slowing down their regular practice and looking to add in

something new • Wanting to increase income• Wanting to help people at a deeper level• Wanting to organize an existing FM practice• Wanting to update an existing clinical nutrition practice

• If you give 5HTP alone serotonin levels increase, but this stimulates an increase in the enzyme that helps increase serotonin

• This will also increase dopamine synthesis from tyrosine, which in the beginning may relieve symptoms, but if 5HTP is administered over a long period of time it will deplete dopamine unless tyrosine is also supplemented

• The reverse is also true - using tyrosine alone will lower serotonin

SYNTHESIS

• If you increase serotonin with 5HTP the body will increase the enzymes that breakdown the serotonin - unfortunately these same enzymes break down dopamine so the long term impact of using 5HTP will include the reduction of dopamine

• The reverse is also true –long term use of tyrosine alone will deplete serotonin

METABOLISM

TRANSPORT (UPTAKE AND SECRETION)

• Function as one system (intertwined)

• Giving only:

• Serotonin precursors deplete catecholamines

• Dopamine precursors depletes serotonin

Depletes the other system:• Using only L-dopa depletes serotonin

• Use of L-dopa in competitive state• While serotonin is in the endogenous state

• Using only 5-HTP depletes dopamine• Use of 5-HTP in the competitive state• While dopamine is in the endogenous state

• Chemical or heavy metal induced cell death of post synaptic neurons from neurotoxins in the environment

• Physical trauma to post synaptic neuron from TBI

• Most of the conditions we are considering have a genetic component

• Question is, “What percent of the problem is genetic vs. environmental and how does that impact the long term outcomes especially in regard to being able to eventually get off of the supplements?”

• What are the variables that control whether the genes will be expressed?

TYPE THREE: GENETICS

• This takes time and practice

• You can’t learn it in a single lecture or weekend seminar

• The Kalish Institute was built to give you that same mentorship experience, including:• Patient communication techniques

• Lab interpretation skills

• Confidence designing protocols

• Business guidance for practice setup

LAST PIECE…PROTOCOL DESIGN
