Assessment Review

The child that I conducted the Illinois Snapshots of Early Literacy on is the

following. Before I began the assessment, I asked my mentor teacher who is an emergent

reader in the classroom and my teacher informed me to conduct the assessment on A.S.

She is a six year old, an emergent reader, her first language is Albanian, and she receives

reduced lunch as well. When I conducted the test I was surprised at a few of the findings.

The findings are described below.

In the first snapshot of letter recognition, A.S. scored a 52 which places her in the

30th percentile. When she was reading the letters, she self corrected three out of the

five letters that she mispronounced. I was surprised at on the second snapshot she did not

use more vocabulary from the story. She did want to look at the pictures from the book

to help her with the questions. She scored 13 out of 21 which places her in the 20th

percentile. In snapshot three she got all of the questions correct. She was very quick in

giving her answers as well. Having 100% put her in the 90th percentile for this snapshot.

In the fourth snapshot, she was not instructed a second time to point to the words on the

page. She followed directions clearly. She had difficulties with naming two out of six of

the words. She scored a seven out of nine on the snapshot putting her in the 20th

percentile.

In snapshot five she was able to create the sound for the consonant words without

a flaw. Part of the reason that I think this was is because most everyday that I have

observed in the classroom, the teacher has the children pronounce the sounds of the

letters as a class. Although, when it came to short vowel and digraph sounds, she only

received three out of eight correct. This gave her a score of 21 out of 26 placing her in

the 50th percentile. A.S. struggled with snapshot six. During her spelling tests, in the

beginning of the year primarily she was having difficulty with spelling. She primarily

got the first and last letter of the word correctly; it was in the middle that she had

difficulty. She received 14 ½ out of 27 on this snapshot placing her in the 40th percentile.

When I gave A.S. the sheet for snapshot seven she looked at the words and immediately

commented on how she did not want to do this one because the words were too hard. I

told her just to try to say the words. She was able to receive 12 out of 22 on this snapshot

placing her in the 60th percentile. A.S. did really well on snapshot 8. She liked to talk

about the words in depth by including prior experiences. She received 9 out of 14 which

places her in the 80th percentile.

For the reading portion of the snapshots, A.S. did the following. She was able to

read the story, Toy Models well. She only had one pronunciation mistake in the

beginning. She was very good with the comprehension as well. She received a five out

of five on the first reading. On the second reading, A.S. struggled with the reading more

but she liked talking about the story and gave great comprehension of the story. She

received a three out of five on this story. This ended the assessment.

Overall, A.S. scored an average in the 40th percentile. Her reading is still

emerging and she does well with phonemic awareness. Working with A.S. more on her

spelling words would benefit her in not just her spelling but with her reading as well.
