    Vocabulary and reference

    Skill 1 : understand vocabulary from

    context.

    .You may be asked to determine the meaning of aword or phrase.

    .Relax!!!!!! the passage will give you a clear

    indication of what the word means.

    .Be careful !!!! Easy words may not have their regular

    meanings in the texts. (pgs. 10-11)

    Skill 2: Recognize referents

    You may be asked to recognize the referent for aparticular pronoun or adjective.

    Pronouns, third person object pronouns, possessive

    pronouns, demonstrative pronoun,( he, hers, these,which, etc.)

    A referent generally precedes the pronoun oradjective in the passage, so study carefully what

    comes before and after the referent. (p.17)

    SENTENCES : Reading skill 3: simplify the

    meanings of sentences.

    You will have to make a long story SHORT.

    Choose the answer that is the closest to the

    meaning. The one that summarizes the

    essence. (p. 26)

    Reading skill 4: insert sentences into the

    passage.

    You must click on one of the squares insertedin the passage, so you will decide where asentence could be added to one of the

    paragraphs. Take your time.

    Study the sentence to inserted and look at the

    context before and after the squares. If theymake sense all together just click and moveon.(p.35)

    DETAILS : Reading skill 5: Find factual

    information.

    Multiple choice questions.

    Often restatements of what it is written in the

    passage. It has to express the same idea, with

    different words.

    They are usually given in order in the passage,

    and you are also given the paragraph where to

    look at. (p.49)

    Reading skill 6: Understand negative facts.

    You will have to find a not stated, not mentioned or

    not true answer.

    It means three answers are stated, mentioned and

    true in the passage.

    2 kinds of questions:

    . 3 answers that are true and one

    that is not..3 true answers and one that is not stated or

    not mentioned. (pags. 56,57)

    INFERENCES : Reading skill 7: Make inferences

    from stated facts.

    Multiple-choice question in which you have to draw

    a conclusion from a specific detail or details in the

    passage.

    They will contain the words: implied, inferred, likely,probably, etc.

    Some information will be given in the passage and

    you will have to draw a conclusion, it will not be

    stated.(70, 71)

    Reading skill 8: Infer rhetorical purpose.

    WHY??

    Explain why the author chose to use certain words or

    phrases in a passage.

    Multiple-choice questions

    Decide which of the 4 options describes best the

    intention of the author ( what he meant, tried to

    highlight, expressed, the stance, etc) (pags 76, 77)

    READING TO LEARN:Reading skill 9: Select

    summary information.

    You will have to complete a summary chart with agiven topic for which you will have to choose themajor supporting ideas.

    It is worth 2 points for 3 correct answers, 1 for 2 and

    0 for 1 or nothing. Recognize the rhetorical pattern of the information.

    Compare and contrast, cause and effect, argumentsupported by reasons, etc.

    Include the major ideas and the critical supportinginformation.(pags 91,92)

    Reading skill 10 : Complete schematic tables.

    A SCHEMATIC WHAT????

    It is a table that outlines the key information from apassage.

    It may have 5 or 7 correct answers. 3 points for 5 answers, 2 for 4, 1 for 3, 0 for 2 or 1.

    Recognize overall organization of the information inthe passage, including the major points and the

    critical supporting information. ( 98,99)
