The Albuquerque Balloon FiestaHave you ever spotted a hot air balloon drifting across the sky? Most would agree that it’s
a breathtaking sight. Now imagine the sight of more than 500 balloons ascending into the sky! This scene happens each year at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Not only is the Balloon Fiesta the largest ballooning event in the world, but it is also the most photographed event on the entire planet!
Balloonists from all over the world travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to participate in the Balloon Fiesta. It takes place in early October because the cool morning and evening temperatures are perfect for a balloon launch. Also, the city is known for the “Albuquerque Box”, a term used to describe the ideal weather patterns and geography that allow the balloonists to have an unusual amount of control over their balloons.
The first balloon event in Albuquerque took place in 1972. On April 8th of that year, thirteen balloons launched from a shopping center parking lot. It was part of a promotion organized by a local radio station. The event grew in popularity with each passing year. In recent years, 500 balloons have been launched, and more than 850,000 people have attended the Balloon Fiesta.
One of the most popular events to attend is the mass ascension. During this event, balloons launch in two waves, starting at 7:00 A.M. The lead balloon carries the American flag and takes off while America’s national anthem is played. All of the balloons are launched within two hours of the lead balloon. As you can imagine, it is truly an astonishing and unforgettable sight!

The Floating Egg
Concept: Buoyancy
Materials:
● raw egg
● 3 tall, clear glasses
● salt
● water
Thinking and Predicting Question:
Which is more buoyant: saltwater or freshwater?
Will the amount of salt added to water affect its buoyancy?
What to do:
Fill all 3 glasses ¾ full with water.
Place a raw egg in glass #1 and observe. (It will sink.)
Put a several tablespoons of salt in glass #2. (Amount depends on the size of the glass.) Stir.
Now place the egg in glass #2 and observe. (Since you have lots of salt, it should float. If not, add
more salt.)
Now put half as much salt in glass #3 as you did in glass #2.
Place the egg in glass #3 and observe. (The egg should float, but not as high.)
Experiment with the amount of salt. Through trial and error, you may be able to get the egg to suspend
itself in the middle of the liquid.
Why this happens:
Salt changes the density of the water, therefore causing objects to be more buoyant.
Vocabulary:
buoyancy – the ability of an object to float in water

My essential Question: What factors led to the American Revolution? The American Revolution started because of the French and Indian War and began with shots fired at Lexington and Concord. French and Indian War was fought between France and England (Britain) over lands in the Ohio River Valley, which both the French and the English claimed. The British won the war, and gained control of these lands, but had a large debt as a result of the war. The British Parliament (their government) determined that this debt (money owed) should be paid by the American colonists whose lands the British had been defending. The British government changed its colonial policy. Before the French and Indian War, the British government ignored what was happening in the colonies and let them govern and tax themselves. After the French and Indian War, the British Parliament began to pass a series of laws that changed the relationship between the colonial assemblies (the colonists government) and the Parliament. Colonists believed it was the right of their colonial assemblies to impose taxes, not the right of the King or of Parliament and they resisted this changed policy.
The Stamp Act was a tax on all papers, such as legal documents and newspapers. The colonists were forced to pay this directly to the king and Parliament, and protested with the cry “No taxation without representation.” Colonists did not have a representative in Parliament, and therefore had no voice in Parliament. Colonists organized a Stamp Act Congress, which sent a petition to the King, and a declared a boycott on British goods that led to the repeal of the Stamp Act. They also organized the Sons and Daughters of Liberty in order to protest British taxes.
The Tea Act was not a tax. This act gave the British East India Company the rights to sell tea in the colonies. Colonists were boycotting tea because of a tax Imposed under the Townshend Acts. The Sons of Liberty feared that the availability of cheap tea would threaten the effectiveness of the boycott. In Boston, they threw the tea overboard. The Boston Tea Party resulted in the Parliament passing what the colonists called the Intolerable Acts.
The Intolerable Acts closed Boston harbor and took away the right of the colony of Massachusetts to govern itself. The British named these acts the Coercive Acts because they were designed to coerce, or force, the colonists to pay for the dumped tea and recognize the right of the Parliament to make tax laws for the colonies. Colonists sent delegates to a continental congress in order to address the problem of the Intolerable Acts. The First Continental Congress established a boycott on all trade with Great Britain and sent a petition to the King. This congress also advised American colonists to arm themselves. This led to the battle of Lexington and Concord and the start of the Revolutionary War.
Complete the cause and effect chart below: So, the British had a large debt to
pay.
The colonists believed it was the right of the colonial assembly to impose taxes.
As a result,
So, the colonists protested with the cry of: “no taxation without representation.”
The colonists though that the Tea Act was unfair and unjust.
As a result,
So, Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts
The First Continental Congress established a boycott on all trade with Great Britain and sent a petition to the King.
