Dictionary Use
1. My basic use of the dictionary is when I do not know a word, but also it can be very
useful when I do not know pronunciation or spelling of some words.
2. It gives me much information than I really need at the moment of my doubt,
because my questions are very specifics. For example, when I am writing, reading
or listening. I know that in a dictionary a word has syllables, spelling, examples in
sentences and all kind of orthography needed to write correctly, such as
capitalization, punctuation, phrase verbs and others which I can find in the middle
section of the book. In conclusion I have to know how to discriminate the
information of the dictionary and use what I need.
3. Actually I like use both. When I was learning English at the beginning I just used
the bilingual dictionary, but now I prefer use both because sometimes I can
understand enough with the monolingual and sometimes not, then I go to the
English-Spanish Spanish-English. I think I am in a kind of transition between the
bilingual to the monolingual English dictionary.
4. When we born we do not know any language, but is through the time that we learn
the environment language, this is in our babyhood when we have amazing naturals
skills to learn languages, but when we are growing up we lost that skill. So, I think
that the pros and cons depend of the talent and skills of each one of us. For example,
if someone has a really good talent to learn English he probably will not need often
a bilingual dictionary because he can imagine the meaning of the word and relate
with the real world. However some people cannot and need to know the word in
their own language. In conclusion I think that the use of the monolingual dictionary
brings you closer and faster to the learning English because you see yourself
involved in an English medium and when you are in and bilingual dictionary it takes
you back a little in your learning English.
5. Yes, there are sometimes. For example when I am reading sometimes I can
understand the meaning depending the context, or I try to figure out the meaning
through the formation of the word (two words together, etc.), also when I am
reading a practice Toefl or in any other kind of test we are not able to use dictionary
and I just attempt to decipher.
6. Yes, I see difference. In my dictionary I have another kind of symbols for
pronunciation and a simplest definition, more specific that on the book.
