Early success in learning to read brings emotional and behavioural advantages.

A good reader is confident, has a good self image, is comfortable at school and

is socially acceptable. Children who fail to learn how to read usually suffer

negative effects, such as the loss of self esteem, the inability to cope with other

subjects, antisocial behaviour, loneliness, depression. It is vitally important that

every child learns to read.

We all learn to speak, it is a natural occurrence. However not all of us have

learnt to read. it is difficult for a fluent reader to understand the enormous scope

of conceptual development to understand the black marks on paper and

interrelate them with speech sounds to communicate the meaning of the text.

At some point, regardless of the method of teaching, children must grasp and

make use of the concept that units of print correspond with units of speech. This

principle may be learned along with or after the accumulation of sight word

vocabulary. Whatever method is used a child has to be able to decode the

unknown words that he/she will encounter in the early stages of reading. The

child has to have the concept and skill to translate the printed symbols into

speech sounds and into a form of language that is familiar and already

understood. The child has to learn the specific correspondences of letters or

group of letters to specific speech sounds.

This workbook teaches children to hear and identify phonemes and letter-sound

relationships and phonic patterns. Letter-sound correspondences are taught

intensively and systematically.

Rhyming repetitive patterns help to consolidate and expand childs knowledge of

spelling patterns.

Illustrations are visually stimulating, they enhance the words, they aid the recall

of phonetic patterns, they act as a bridge between the auditory, visual and

language associations.

The words are printed in different fonts to prepare the students for reading any

kinds of books.

The activities are designed so that they can be used with or without the self

checking LUK tray (box). The words may be connected with their matching

pictures, or the pictures with their matching words, words can be copied under

or next to the pictures.

The LUK tray (box) can be used to self check after each activity has been

completed or the LUK box could be used independently without using a pencil

(see page IV ...how to use the miniLUK).

Some children learn better when they are not distracted by writing, they loose

the automatic recall and reading fluency.

The lid of the miniLUK tray (box) is divided into 12 blank squares, the base isdivided into 12 numbered squares. There are 12 numbered tiles to work with.

How to use the miniLUK System.

Step 1.Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 into the blank squares on the lid ofthe miniLUK box.

or

Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 on the table ready to be used.

Step 2.Choose your worksheet (page).

Step 3.

Pick up tile number 1 and place it under or next to the number 1 picture.Find the word bag. Next to the word is a number. Find this number on thebase of the miniLUK box. Place the tile number 1 onto that number. Pick uptile number 2 and place it under number 2 picture. Find the word bat.Next to the word is a number. Find this number onthe base of the miniLuk box. Place the tile number 2onto that number.Repeat the same procedure until all 12 tilesare in the box.

Step 4.The tiles are in place, the task is accomplished. Close the lid and turn the LUKbox over sideways. Open the lid and a pattern will appear.

Step 5.Match the pattern in the box with the pattern on the bottom of the page. If thepatterns match, well done! You have not made a single mistake! If the pattern isnot quite correct, but is recognisable, you have still done a good job.

There are 2 ways how to use the miniLUK:

Use the LUK box as you go. Work out the problems one by one. Look for

the answers in the answer box, find the code number (next to the answer)

and place the tile in the LUK box as described in step 3. You dont need to

write the answers, just placethe tiles in the LUK box.

OR

Write the correct word to each picture, join the words with the matching

pictures. When finished use the miniLUK to check the answers.

The advantage of the LUK system is that the student can work independently, check

his answers and correct his mistakes.

The student will experience satisfaction from work well done when viewing the

completed LUK pattern.

The student does not need writing skills to learn to read and spell.
