Douglas County Readers Recognize Local Favorites
2013
©
The results are in. The ballots are counted. From FAVORITE ASIAN
RESTAURANT to FAVORITE SENIOR LIVING CENTER and everything in between, readers of The News-Review have told us who they believe are the crème de la crème in their specific category. Their choices are contained in this unique advertising section – the Reader’s Choice Awards. Last fall, we published an eight page ballot. The print version was distributed to readers who receive The News-Review at their home or in stands. An online version was also available at www.nrtoday.
com. We asked readers to choose “a favorite” from multiple businesses in specific categories. There was also a place where they could “write in” their favorite. Readers made
their choices in over 80 categories and we are pleased to bring
you the results. Ten readers won a $50 gift certificate to enjoy a shopping spree at one
of Douglas County’s favorite retailers – Fred
Meyer.
This section represents the opinions of the readers who responded to the ballot. If your favorites did not win this year, be sure to vote in the 2014 Reader’s Choice.
CONGRATULATIONSThank you for voting for your favorites on the
2013 Reader’s Choice Ballot. We asked our readers to make their choice in over 80 categories. If their favorite wasn’t listed, we asked them to write it in. This voting
process was time consuming and we appreciate the fact that you made time to let us know who your favorites are.
The reward to our readers for completing the ballot was a chance to win a $50.00 gift certificate to Fred Meyer, a Reader’s Choice Favorite.
Congratulations to our readers who are this year’s winners
The gift certificates may be claimed at The News-Review office at 345 NE Winchester in Roseburg, anytime after Friday,
January 31, 2014. Winners must have photo identification. Gift certificate must be claimed by February 28, 2014 or it will be forfeited.

Dave & Renie Pedotti moved to Douglas County in 1995
from a small town in Sonoma County, Fort Roth, California where they were sheep and cattle ranchers. In July of 1997, they purchased the restaurant we now know as Pedotti’s Family Italian Restaurant in Sutherlin, Oregon.
The food is authentic
and it’s homemade, but it’s the staff that has made this happen. Pedotti’s Restaurant employees nine people including manager, Patti Taylor, who has been with them for six years.

It’s hard to believe that it has been one year since Elaine and I took over Charley’s BBQ. We have enjoyed meeting all of the local customers, those that are from all over the country and world that are visiting Roseburg or just passing through.
We made a lot of changes in 2013. New smoker that smokes with real applewood logs which really enhanced the smoke flavor in the meat, a new counter, equipment, redecorated, added big screen TV’s, and plan to make more improvements in 2014 by adding an outdoor deck off the back of the building so our customers can enjoy some great BBQ, and cold tap beer when the warm weather returns. We also plan on bringing music back to Charley’s, where music first started in a restaurant venue. So keep your eye out for some great bands coming soon. Our “Best in the Northwest” prime rib on Friday nights continues to sell out so come early or make a reservation-we start serving it at 5pm.We offer catering to groups of all sizes and can help you with a personalized menu for your special occasion. From the entire Charley’s team thank you for your vote and we look forward to seeing you all in 2014.

Wildlife Safari welcomes new cheetah cubs Dapper and Donovan Following the birth of two male cheetahs on September 20, 2013, Wildlife Safari provided the public a unique opportunity to name each cub. Two contests were conducted from November through the end of December – one at the Roseburg Valley Mall and another for Wildlife Safari’s patrons. The names were chosen at random from more than 1,000 submissions. Dapper, which means “brave one” in Afrikaans, was named by Douglas County resident Jodi Ellingson. The other cheetah cub was named Donovan, which according to winner, Carly Redheart, is a Native American term meaning “young prince warrior”. Donovan was the name of her only son that was tragically killed in an automobile accident last year. When contacted, the Philomath resident was overcome with emotion knowing that a cheetah at Wildlife Safari would be named for her late son. “These were the only cubs born in the park in 2013,” said Carnivore Supervisor Sarah Roy, “so we are pleased that they will have names personal to our guests. These boys will grow up here and be a part of our nationally recognized cheetah breeding program, helping to ensure the survival of their species.”

O n August 9, 1959, two days after the
infamous Roseburg Blast, Harvard Ave. Drugs opened its doors for business. Although the store was not quite ready for the public, owners Phil Kaser and Florence Groshong felt compelled to be available to help a city reeling from a devastating dynamite truck explosion that left fourteen people dead and many more suffering serious injuries.
Harvard Ave. Drugs official
“Grand Opening” occurred one month later in September. This pharmacy / gift store featured Oregon’s first Drive-Up Prescription window. The only days of the year
that Harvard Ave. Drugs was closed were Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. Otherwise, they were open 7 days a week from 9AM til the last prescription was filled. A pharmacy cannot be open unless a pharmacist is on duty, so Phil was at the store everyday from opening to closing. Florence worked weekdays from 9 to 5. Jo Kaser, Phil’s wife, and their three daughters would bring dinner to the store each day. While Phil ate his dinner and visited with the girls, Jo would work the front counter.
After a few years, Harvard Ave.
Drugs was able to add an employee and more as they grew. Today that number stands at more than twenty.
In the early 1970s, Florence Groshong wanted to retire. Phil & Jo purchased her share and the Kasers became sole owners of Harvard Ave. Drugs. The store doubled in size when they knocked out a wall and remodeled. Another remodel took place in the 1990s. This coincided with the retirement of Ron Noel, owner of West Side Pharmacy. The Kasers purchased his store’s inventory and, thankfully, acquired Ron’s staff and loyal customers.
Harvard Ave. Drugs has always been located at the same address. In the beginning, though, they had to share the building with other tenants. The success of their business prompted the continual expansion of the store and they now occupy the entire building. Phil and Jo are still very active in the business but are enjoying the fruits of their labor by working part-time.
Hanson Jewelers
In 1952, after a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, Alf Hanson graduated from
Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls with a degree in Watch-Making and Clock Repair. He found work in the Myrtle Creek branch of Gosline Jewelers, where he honed his skills and managed the store.
In 1953, Alf married Dolores Bartley. The business grew and prospered until Glenn Gosline decided to close the Myrtle Creek store in 1960. However, instead of closing the store, Alf and Dolores purchased it and changed the name
to Hanson Jewelers. Alf expanded his skills into jewelry repair. Hanson Jewelers soon became known as a full-service jewelry store. In 1982, Dolores’s brother Frank Bartley retired from the U.S. Army and he and his wife Jeredith joined the family business. Frank had graduated from the Columbia School of Gemology, and had a diamond diploma from the Gemological Institute of America. Frank and Jere were a comfortable fit into the business, allowing Dolores to pursue a vocation in Bookkeeping and Income Tax Preparation. Their arrival also allowed Alf to gradually spend more and more time away from the store, and finally, to retire.

In 1986, Hanson Jewelers became a member of the Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO), linking Hanson Jewelers with over 800 other independent jewelry stores across the country. The IJO organizes buying conventions twice a year, offering seminars on a wide variety of topics critical to running, and growing, an independent jewelry store. It was the IJO that first encouraged Frank to travel to the diamond capital of the world, Antwerp, Belgium, to buy diamonds directly from the diamond cutters. This has become a twice-yearly trip for Frank and an integral part of Hanson Jewelers. Many, many customers in Douglas County, and as far away as the United Arab Emirates are wearing diamonds purchased for them in Antwerp by Frank.
In 2001, a second store was opened in Roseburg Town Center on the corner of Jackson and
Cass streets. For the next five years Diana Denton managed the Myrtle Creek store, Dorothy Bare managed the Roseburg store, and Frank and Jere floated between the two. In 2006, the decision was made, with much soul-searching and trepidation, to close the Myrtle Creek store and focus all of their attention on growing the Roseburg store.
We love being a part of the Douglas County community and enjoy helping you with your jewelry needs, whether it be a new item of jewelry or the repair of your existing jewelry. Roseburg, Oregon, Reader’s Choice — Friday, January 31, 2014 The News-Review, Page 27
Sherm and Wanda Olsrud have been in the grocery business for almost 50 years – starting in Eugene and then moving into the Medford, Klamath Falls, and Roseburg areas. In 1967, the Olsruds bought the Thunderbird Market on Jacksonville Highway in Medford. Seven years later, they purchased a store at the Shasta Plaza Mall in Klamath Falls. An additional store in Medford and the opening of a store in Roseburg followed in subsequent years.
The Olsrud’s grocery business
continues to quietly support many local activities including 4-H, FFA and many others. They attend the Jackson County, Klamath County, Tulelake/Butte Valley, Josephine County, Siskiyou Jr. Livestock and Douglas County auctions. Each year, Sherm enjoys reading the “thank you” letters from the 4-H and FFA members who have sold him their beef, swine, or lamb. After the auctions, the animals are processed and the meat sold in the local store.
Over the past seven years, the
Olsrud’s have donated a semi-truckload of food to the Umpqua Community Action Network. This tradition also extends to the Medford and Klamath Falls communities, where, since 2000, the Olsrud’s have donated semi-truckloads of groceries to area food pantries.
Sherm, Wanda and their son
Steve remain deeply committed to Medford, Klamath Falls, Roseburg and the surrounding communities. They strive to give their customers what they want in a friendly manner at a good price. Sherm says, “If you shop with us you will save money.” Steve is quick to follow with “Buying right means we can sell it right.” The Olsruds wish to thank the good folks who continue to shop and work at Sherm’s Thunderbird Markets and Food 4 Less. They look forward to continuing their support of the communities they serve.

AmeriTitle is proud to be voted the Reader’s Choice Award for “Favorite Title Company”. It is rewarding knowing you value the fact that AmeriTitle is the ONLY title/escrow company in
Douglas County who examines, produces, and provides all its title products and services locally—not outsourcing jobs to Eugene/
Salem/Portland or foreign countries. We are also the ONLY title/escrow company in Douglas County to provide local collection escrow services; we do not ship your account out of county to a
third party; we service your account locally, as we have for the past 28 years.
Thank you for valuing our strong ESCROW team who work tirelessly to provide you the best in service and knowledge to ensure a successful real estate closing. We are proud of our
community; therefore we partner with many local non-profits through financial contributions and hundreds of employee
volunteer hours to help make our community a little better place to live and work.
Remember, you have the choice of which real estate title and escrow company to trust with your next real estate transaction—
choose the one voted number 1, AMERITITLE.
