District-Governor’s Newsletter - 1 -
Message from the DG
Good morning all and welcome back from Christmas and into the New Year –
I trust all are fully rested and ready for an inspiring 2013.
Each year in January we focus on Public Awareness – sadly the message of
our wonderful contribution to the world is not heard by as many as we would
like. Whose fault some may ask – I believe we all share the responsibility to
carry the message into our communities.
We can do this by wearing our Rotary Badge every day, including Rotary as
part of our conversations with friends and family, posting Rotary activities on
our social media pages, inviting friends to join in our Clubs’ activities such as
fundraising, vocational visits or special fun meetings. At a Club level,
celebrate Rotary’s birthday in February with a party in the park and include
as many non-Rotarians as you can.
Recently Marg and I were in a movie theatre when an End Polio
advertisement was screened. In the darkness, we heard voices recognising
the presence of Rotary and the work we are doing on a global scale. These
advertisements are result of our District’s successful application for almost
$15,000 in grant monies from Rotary International. To ensure our funds were
spread into the far corners of D9670 we will soon be seeing the famous
Rotary message displayed on the sides of heavy transport vehicles plying the
roads from Bourke, Cobar, Dubbo and the Hunter Valley.

Message from the DG (Cont.)
At time of writing, many parts of our country are being ravaged by the
nemesis of summer – bushfire. In Tasmania, with home losses in the
hundreds and communities destroyed we can only imagine the horror
and suffering of our fellow Aussies during this difficult time. If you or your
Club are in a position to contribute in any way, please see below a letter
from my friend and colleague District Governor James Wilcox advising his
District 9830 appeal.
The role of Rotary following disasters is that of rebuilding lives and
communities – At the end of this summer we may need to asses our
position as a District with the view to taking a broader outlook to support
those communities who may be in dire need of help.
Margaret and I are looking forward to meeting with you at
Magic of Rotary Conference 22, 23, 24 March – at The Glasshouse, Port
Macquarie. To register:
http://www.9670.emc.com.au
for the Conference to remember.
So my friends, until next month stay safe, stay happy and enjoy Rotary.

Group Study Exchange
L to R Meredith Cameron, Belinda Latimore, Samantha Wolfe, Nicole Bailey, Kate Cavanagh, Chris Roach (team leader)
The Group Study Exchange team to D1090 in England leaves on February 10, 2013 and will be away for 5 weeks. The team was welcomed by the Rotary Club of Mudgee Sunrise on Saturday, November 24 when they gave their presentation to the Club and many non-Rotarian visitors. This was very well received.
We wish them a very successful exchange and look forward to greeting the team from D1090 when they arrive on March 11, 2013.
ShelterBox on standby to help in Tasmania and New South Wales
ShelterBox stands ready to respond to the devastating bush fires that have swept through south eastern
Tasmania. The small communities of Dunalley and Boomer Bay have been almost completely destroyed and 126
properties burnt to the ground.
NSW-based ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members & Rotarians Greg Moran (DGN D9650), Scott Jarman
(President Rotary Club Nelson Bay D9670) and Lynn Jarman (D9670) are on standby to fly to Tasmania if
required, with pre-positioned stock from Melbourne.
ShelterBox Australia Communications Officer, Mike Greenslade said, "We have been in touch with the State
Emergency Service in Tasmania and made them aware of the resources we have on offer. Greg is coordinating
efforts and has also contacted emergency management in New South Wales, where serious fires are sweeping
the countryside and threatening homes. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported but our hearts go out to
those who have lost property and livelihoods”.
In February 2009 Victoria was devastated by the country’s worst ever bush fires. Estimates suggest that around
900 homes were destroyed, leaving around 7,000 survivors registered for assistance with the Red Cross. 79
ShelterBoxes were successfully delivered to the fire-ravaged Whittlesea area.
Yours in Rotary,
Scott Jarman President Rotary Club of Nelson Bay

Rotary Foundation Raffle
Greetings Fellow Rotarians,
The District 9670 Foundation Raffle is one of the major fundraisers for our District Foundation this year. If all
tickets are sold, the Foundation would raise in excess of $60,000 – Just imagine the good that would do in our
world.
This year’s prizes include $3000 worth of travel from Harvey World Travel Toronto, $1400 value 7 nights family
accommodation package in a Poolside Cabana at “The Palms At Avoca” Avoca Beach, The New Apple IPad Wi-fi
(value $539) and $200 BCF Gift Voucher (Boating, Camping & Fishing).
Once again this year, funds from the sale of Raffle Tickets will accrue Foundation Points for Clubs. What a way to
raise Foundation Points so that a Paul Harris Recognition can be awarded by your Rotary Club. What a great
opportunity, particularly for smaller Clubs to earn these points and reward the Service above Self of a fellow
Rotarian or community member.
One of the great honours we can bestow on a Rotarian is to award a Paul Harris Recognition and the only way a
club is entitled to make this award is to donate $US1, 000 to Rotary International. In every Club and community, there is a special person who more than deserves this award. Through this raffle we now have an opportunity, to
raise these funds without interfering with our regular club fundraising activities.
Additional books are available and the returning date for the tickets is not until 28 February 2013.
Prizes will be drawn at our District Conference at Port Macquarie in March, 2013
If your Club needs additional books, please email me on [email protected] or phone 0404969473 at any time

Has your club ever thought about having your own (Rotary World Community Service) RAWCS project?
Here is your chance with a wonderful opportunity! You can’t buy love but you pay heavily for it.
