1 Year Foundation Courses at Read Dance and Theatre College

Why train at Read College?

Our full-time vocational training has excellent, proven track records. Over the last 4 years, a full100% of our Musical Theatre graduates have secured places at top UK Dance and DramaColleges for their further training, giving them the best possible start to their career. Our exam

results are also exceptional - 100% success rate with 70% of those being Distinctions.

Our Foundation Course in Musical Theatre offers students aged 17+ the chance to train with someof the top tutors in the theatre industry, whilst at the same time rigorously preparing to audition at3-year colleges. Our course is not biased towards dance, acting or singing - we take students withstrengths in different areas and tailor their training to suit the colleges that they are more likely tobe auditioning at. That said, all of our students are trained as ‘triple threat’ performers during theiryear and are required to train in a balance of all three disciplines of Musical Theatre to maximisetheir chances of getting into college and to broaden their future employability.

Students work towards the ATCL Level 4 Diploma in Performing (Musical Theatre), awarded byTrinity College London, which is accredited as the equivalent of 1 st Year Degree studies.

Regular visits by tutors from leading Drama Schools and Dance Colleges, and by top industryprofessionals such as performers, directors, and choreographers, are an integral part of thecourse, leading to our excellent examination and college entry results.

Course Content and Structure

The Foundation Course in Musical Theatre at Read College is a 1 year, full-time course runningfrom Monday to Friday for 36 weeks. Students benefit from at least 27.5 hours of contact time withtutors every week.

The aim of the course is that students will graduate having been offered a places or places at 3-year schools, and so our curriculum is broad and balanced equally across all three disciplines ofmusical theatre. The timetable is also flexible to allow students to be trained specifically for theschools that they are most likely to get into. For example, students who are strong vocally buthave less dance experience will be offered more acting classes to give them the best shot atschools like GSA and Mountview. On the other hand, those who have more experience in danceand less in acting will have a broader range of dance disciplines on their timetable to help themwith auditions such as Bird, London Studio Centre and Millennium.

Our students are trained by leading industry experts in their field, and the weekly timetable ofclasses also includes Audition Preparation, during which students will be advised on where, when

and how to apply; what repertoire to use; what styles to expect; what each school is most likely tolook for; etc. Guest teachers from top schools also provide a valuable insight into each collegeand what to expect from it.
