I f you’ve never experienced the loss of a loved one, it’s hard to be prepared for the rush of emotions the grief journey can bring. Grieving is a process that can be very different and deeply personal for each member of
the family. Providing support to families and loved ones after a patient’s death is a crucial part of hospice care, a service which is also extended to the community. Our Healing Hearts grief support services focus on the entire family and offer focused counseling for adults, children and teens—so that every family member can find the right approach to making healthy adjustments to loss. Hospice of the Calumet Area recognizes that the grief experienced by children and teens is often a new experi-ence for them. These young people need to know that they are not alone at this most difficult time in their lives. Healing Hearts offers helpful information and support in a comfortable atmosphere for sharing feelings and experiences, struggles and triumphs. We provide support while allowing the young person a chance to learn about both the joy and pain that comes from caring deeply for others. Our groups are facilitated by credentialed Bereavement Counselors and cover a variety of topics, such as: Getting to Know You and Your Loved One, Dealing with Feelings, Understanding My Feelings, Remembering, Coping with Change and Moving On. A past participant of Healing Hearts for Teens describes her appreciation for the group; “I am very pleased with how the group is being run and so is my mom. It helps me a lot in my daily life.” Healing Hearts grief support is available to anyone in the community at no cost, whether or not they had a loved one in hospice care.

Message from the Executive Director...
T he year 2017 has begun as most years do, with hope that
the New Year will be as good as the previous one or even better. We approach our resolutions with new found optimism and enthusi-asm, though this year has been off to a rockier start than some. Many found themselves weary from the election season and the weather sure has been a roller
coaster of highs and lows, though most aren’t complain-ing about the 40 and 50 degree days or the lack of snow! The movement to repeal the Affordable Care Act has been met with praise by some and worry by others who are concerned about what it means for their healthcare coverage.
Despite the uncertainty being felt by some, Hospice of the Calumet Area is a constant in this community that you can count on to be there for those in need. One of the first value statements adopted by our founding Board of Directors was to care for individuals regardless of their ability to pay. We are proud of the fact that thirty-six years later, it remains one of our guiding values. It applies to care provided regardless of the setting, be it an individual’s own home, a nursing facility or Hospice of the Calumet Area’s “home” the William J. Riley Memorial Residence. And for the past 16 years, we have provided free support services for those with serious illnesses who are not yet hospice ready through our Transitions™ program.
During 2016, we served over 1,100 individuals and fami-lies in our Hospice and Transitions programs. Over 300 of our hospice patients made our William J. Riley Memo-rial Residence their home for all or a portion of their time in hospice care. While many believe that hospice is only for patients with cancer, less than half of the individuals cared for by Hospice of the Calumet Area were sick from cancer. Of course, we would not be able to accomplish this without the generous support of so many of you. We are honored and humbled by your kindness and support. You help us make a difference in the quality of life in the Region and ensure we will be here for those in need today and tomorrow.

I t doesn’t take long working in hospice to start looking introspectively at your own life. You quickly realize that
the majority of the patients in hospice never imagined being in the situation they find themselves. You begin to ask yourself, “What would my personal decision be if I were faced with a life-limiting illness?”
Of course, we can never know for sure what our decision will be until it actually happens, but it does accomplish one thing; it starts the ‘thought process’. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but many of the families we encounter have never thought about dying, much less about details such as where they want to be during that time, who they want around them or what needs to happen in order for their wishes to be fulfilled.
Nearly as important is that these decisions all have an in-fluence on the people around you...especially your family. The person who is proactive and eliminates the undo responsibility of the family to ’guess’ what he/she wants gives their loved ones a gift they will appreciate long after they’re gone.
One example that comes to mind is a patient we had in his late 50’s. He didn’t want his wife to be burdened with funeral arrangements, so while he was still healthy enough he made all of the arrangements himself. Also, his son had agreed to give his eulogy, but struggled with writing. In order to make it easier for him, he wrote his own eulogy for his son to read at the funeral.
Another important piece in this process is having these conversations before a crisis occurs. Since these discus-sions are difficult, it’s natural to not want to talk about them. Just remember, it only becomes more difficult the longer you wait. By having the discussion before its needed, people can be in a better frame of mind to have open and honest discussions.
Lastly, write you wishes down! Complete an Advance Directive that will carry out those wishes should you ever become unable to communicate them yourself. Then share them with your family, friends, physician and clergy.
A great website to help make this task and decisions as easy as possible is www.StartTheConversation.org. Guides are able to be downloaded free-of-charge giving step by step instructions. Many questions such as when’s the proper time to contact hospice can be found at www.HospiceCalumet.org. And as always, we’re a phone call away to answer any questions you may have.
Friends of Hospice Member Recognized for Community Service
Friends of Hospice member and Past President, Debbie Rollo, was recently recognized by her employer for her commitment and service to initiatives that better the communities in which she both lives and works. Horizon Bank held its annual recognition dinner on January 14, hosting more than 750 Horizon employees and their families. Debbie was selected by a group of her peers to receive The Burton B. Ruby Community Service Award, recogniz-ing her work with Hospice of the Calumet Area and other non-profit organizations. Debbie’s devotion and dedication to these or-ganizations come in part from her personal experience serving as a caretaker for others. According to Debbie, “Service isn’t about winning an award. It’s about being in it for the long haul; learning from others, making a difference and creating friendships that last. It’s about celebrating our commitment to serve our communities with whatever talent we have to give.”
Local Business with A lot of Heart Many people know the Hospice Artisans for the high quality handcrafted merchandise they create and sell to support patient care and family services at Hospice of the Calumet Area. The Artisans and their creations can often be found at local community fundraising luncheons as well as in local retail establishments. Heart to Heart Gallery of Munster invited the Artisans to set up their own in-store display. Gallery owners, Sally Vargo Eubank and Bill Eubank, provided their customers with the opportunity to purchase Artisan items in their store, allowing 100% of sales to be di-rected to HCA. In just a little over a year, Heart to Heart helped to raise more than $4,000! We are truly grateful to Heart to Heart for this wonderful show of support, and we congratulate them as they retire after
22 years in business. A true gem in the community, they will be missed but will always be a part of the Hospice of the Calumet Area family.

Community Corner Priority Fitness Steps Out for HCA! On Friday, November 25, Priority Fitness Training Center in Munster sponsored their first ever Thankful Hearts Relay Walk to promote a family and pet friendly healthy post-Thanksgiving activity. Funds raised from the event were designated to Hospice of the Calumet Area and The Humane Society of NWI. Many thanks to Priority Fitness owners, Karen and Jim Schutters for working hard to keep our community healthy and for helping us to Cherish Life! We hope to see you at the 2nd Annual Thankful Hearts Relay Walk in November 2017!

Leave a legacy through estate giving plans
I f you are thinking about how you can help ensure that Hospice of the Calumet Area has a secure future,
maintaining its programs and services for years to come, below are a variety of ways you can include HCA in your estate plans.
Wills Gift a percentage of estate assets or a specific sum of money to Hospice of the Calumet Area in your will.
Life Insurance Transfer ownership of an existing policy by completing a “change of beneficiary form” or purchase a new policy and make Hospice of the Calumet Area the owner and irrevocable beneficiary.
Retirement Funds Complete a “change of beneficiary form” for your retirement fund naming Hospice of the Calumet Area as a partial or sole beneficiary.
Outright Gifts Gifts of cash or other assets, such as appreciated securi-ties, (any amount) can be contributed to support current or future needs.
Cash gifts can also help build our Endowment Fund held at the Legacy Foundation.
