A note from DiGM’s Director, Deb Ashby INDEXI am proud to welcome you to the very first edition of Re-SiTE!

Re-SiTE is an online brochure dedicated to promoting UK based professional dance performance works ready for touring for outdoors, sited or site-specific contexts. At Dance Initiative Greater Manchester we specialise in developing dance for the outdoors and in unusual spaces, we want to break boundaries and offer new experiences both to artists and audiences.

We intend Re-SiTE to become an annual feature, produced by DiGM and hope that it becomes a key part of your programming processes, building an important bridge between artists/companies and promoters/festivals etc.

We received a large number of applications from dancers and companies hoping to be featured and would like to thank everybody that applied. There were many positive aspects to the work that we viewed, but we have been selective to ensure that we feature a variety of work that we feel is exciting, innovative, tour ready and offers diversity in programming options.

2012 is set to be both a busy year for Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and an exciting year for dance generally in the North West. Please keep up to date with al l news and projects on our website www.digm.org and we hope to see you at our very own outdoor festival, Urban Moves International Dance Festival in July 2012, www.urbanmovesfestival.co.uk

Thank you

The Artists: Akademi actively pushes the boundaries of where dance can appear and produces innovative South Asian dance events in unusual places. Our productions embrace and are inspired by extraordinary architecture and public spaces. We offer new experiences both to artists and audiences alike and increase access to high quality dance activity to underrepresented communities.

We create work for artists and engage the widest possible public with an art form that while rooted in classical tradition is at the cutting edge of contemporary culture and a particularly British creative force. We are a local organisation with a global perspective and worldwide connections. Our pioneering work contributes significantly to Britain’s international reputation for innovation in South Asian dance.

Our ambitious productions have included part-nerships with a wide range of collaborators eg: Initium (London College of Fashion) Bells (Theatre Tol) and Sufi:Zen (Red Earth). We perform at dance venues, outdoor spaces and festivals, and in both the private and the commercial sectors. We respond to major events such as the Queen’s Commonwealth Games Baton Relay ceremony. We promote a cross arts-led approach and reflect diversity in collaboration with circus, cinema, fashion, music and literature.

Constantly playing with styles and genres, the company has developed a unique approach and strives to create fresh and exciting work. They're highly respected and recognised in Hip-Hop and contemporary dance circles, but always aim to move forward, embrace new concepts, challenge convention and break boundaries.

Always at the forefront of the Hip-Hop Dance Theatre scene in the UK, the company work within three fields: theatre, the commercial sector and education.

This will need to be demar-cated with a rope/similar prior to the perform-ance to manage audience. They will need at least 2m behind the taxi as a backstage area which will need barriers to cordon this off from the public thoroughfare. We will also need clearance of at least 3m from the roof of the Taxi.

The Artist: Charlotte Spencer Projects’ work draws on an intricately woven combination of dance, music and visual art. Driven by inter-ests in the environment and perceptions of time, artistic director, Charlotte Spencer seeks to create work that enables all people to re-connect with the natural world. Charlotte Spencer Projects always work closely with composers and this dialogue is fundamental in the development and realisation of each new work. Charlotte invites audiences to let the performance seep into them - to engage with how it makes them feel. CSP’s work is de-signed to animate a wide range of public, non-theatre spaces. Working in the fields of art and the environment, it is important to foster an awareness of the sustainability and environ-mental impact for the delivery of every project - not only in terms of content, but how the pro-ject is managed, rehearsed, constructed, and realised. Charlotte Spencer is a choreographer based in Brighton. She is an Associate Artist at The Point, Eastleigh, supported by South East Dance, Dance Ireland and a participant on the Tour d’Europe des Choreographes interna-tional networking initiative 2010/11 which took her to choreographic centres in France, Ger-many, Poland, Ireland and Spain. Charlotte is one of the choreographers working on The Making Space programme for Siobhan Davies Dance.

The Artists: Company Chameleon was formed in 2007 by Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner.

Chameleon believe that Dance Theatre is a vital method for social change. Our work allows the viewer to experience the art of dance whilst tackling challenging subjects in inventive ways that are inclusive and accessible.

We create and present groundbreaking dance theatre that brings histories and stories to life with beauty, force and intensity, revealing new insights and alternative views on traditional archetypes, carving a path of inspiration and aspiration for individuals and communities in society whose voice is often misrepresented or not heard.

Through the performance of our work, and through educational programmes, we support social cohesion and artistic understanding. Alongside our touring work we run workshops for young people to engage in dance and we are particularly committed to working with young men to challenge the stereotypes of men in dance and to enable young men to develop key skills in responsibility, discipline and social interaction.

The Work: Search and Find (15 minutes) - Search & Find explores the idea of connection and disconnection between people, as two pro-tagonists search for a way to find a sense of shared understanding and purpose. Fuel is currently producing work with Will Adamsdale, Clod Ensemble, Inua Ellams, Fevered Sleep, David Rosenberg, Sound&Fury, Uninvited Guests and Melanie Wilson.

Fuel’s projects with artists are varied in form and content, and happen in all sorts of places: from a spectacular dance event popping up in public spaces around the UK, to a journey across the body of a 65 year old lesbian grandmother in medical schools; from a heart-felt celebration of love in village halls, to a street party in Bognor Regis.

The Work: Electric Hotel (1 hour) Electric Hotel is a lonely, bizarre and beautiful outdoor spectacle; a uniquely designed, fly-by-night hotel brought to vivid life through dance and sound. Sitting on the outside looking in, the audience snatch glimpses of the do-not-disturb lives unfolding behind the floor to ceiling win-dows. Wearing headphones to eavesdrop on the internal spaces of the building they watch the residents in their private rooms: natural habits, unnatural fantasies and wildly eccentric housekeeping. The Artists: Marc Brew Company makes ten-der, precise choreographic material that exem-plifies the beauty of the moments shared be-tween people.

Marc Brew’s choreography draws out the un-expected physicality of each performer. Work-ing with a range of disabled and non-disabled artists his work entwines newly discovered movement, finding new ways to work with their bodies and reveals the unusual and the inspir-ing in the mundane to tell beautiful stories about being.

Marc Brew Company is committed to develop-ing innovative collaborative work that inter-weaves a physicality derivative of strong con-temporary dance technique. The choreogra-pher employs the use of line and extension, with intricate folding, placement and re-placement. This complex use of the body fused with a very human content offers audiences a clear, intricate and emotive experience. The works created by the company can be thought of as a series of physical conversations, en-counters and interventions that reflect what it is to be human.

The Work: Nocturne (20 minutes) - Nocturne pulls back the sheets on exhausted embraces and near misses in the night. It’s an exquisite contemporary dance quartet that draws you into the unseen dreams of cities at dusk.

Four dancers perform this dynamic work with two specially built double beds. The day to day of couples and domesticity, unfolds into an evening of restless dreams.

Floor required: The performance space must be wheelchair accessible. Any flat, clean sur-

face can be considered. Black dance floor is preferable. Performace space must be a hard, flat surface (concrete paving slabs or similar with no bumps and not on a sloping surface). Beds on wheels and wheelchair will easily mal-function if there are cracks, holes or bumps.

The Artists: Ragroof Theatre specialises in site-specific work, engaging and collaborating with the community in which its productions are realised. We bring our work to the heart of the community; high streets, social centres, boxing clubs, dance halls and schools. We are a col-lective of individual artists with a dazzling array of skills in dance, physical theatre, visual art, written word and curation. We explore specific subjects and communities. It is the human ex-perience and the people’s stories that are at the heart of our work.

Our work process is rooted in the personal connection made between us and the people we meet; it is a journey of learning, laced with laughter, sadness and confrontation. We invite our audience to actively engage with the work and be part of a visceral environment that cap-tures sounds and voices from the worlds we explore. As theatre-makers we are fascinated by the way that stories and memories become brighter, more vivid in the retelling. Our work is often inspired by the very smallest detail, and it is in the retelling of any story, with the added elements of theatricality, that these details, the essence of memory, come to life. We believe our work is relevant. We aim to challenge and transform perceptions, enhancing difference and celebrating change.

The Work: Bridges Y Puentes (45 minutes) Inspired by the Tango and migration, ‘Bridges’ celebrates the inter pollination of cultures. Current, sometimes beautifully subtle, some-times brutally disturbing and often laced with dark humour, at the heart of von Stockert’s work lie social and political observations. Creating work for the stage and site-specific locations, Tilted refuses to be categorised and aims to stretch expectations of what dance and theatre can be.

Maresa von Stockert came to the UK in 1999 to set up her own dance theatre company in Lon-don. Since then she has received wide recogni-tion for her work and has won numerous awards including a 2005 Time Out Live Award for Outstanding Choreography and the prestig-ious Jerwood Choreography Award in 2002.

The Work: SEASAW (1 hour approx.) A trail of contemporary dance, performance art and physical theatre vignettes, SEASAW is inspired by the relationship between humans and water. Whether evoking childhood memories of water-side holidays or provoking thoughts on current environmental issues such as water pollution and global warming, SEASAW wants to both entertain and challenge.

The company produces a mix of indoor touring pro-ductions, participation projects and bespoke, site specific performance.

The company has toured work nationally and internationally, including performances at the London International Mime Festival. Outdoor projects have included outdoor commissions for Greenwich and Docklands Festival, The Mayor of London Trafalgar Square Festival, London 2012 (including the only performance ever staged from Nelsons Column) and BBC London, Henley International Riverside Festival and Without Walls as well as work as aerial consultants and choreographer on a number of projects including the Opening Events for the Liverpool Capital of Culture (dir Nigel Jamieson and Mark Murphy), Peter Pan (National Thea-tre of Scotland, dir John Tiffany), Wicked Lady (New Vic, dir Theresa Heskins), Peter Pan (New Vic, dir Theresa Heskins), King Cotton (dir Jude Kelly), Little Eagles (RSC dir Roxana Silbert). The Artists: Wired Aerial Theatre are best known as the creators of bungee-assisted dance, but after more than a decade of pushing the aerial performance world beyond every imagined boundary, they are so much more than the sum of their parts.

Led by husband and wife team Wendy and Jamie Ogilvie, they are the perfect pairing of movement beauty and technical powerhouse. Based at their centre for aerial excellence, The Higher Space, in the heart of Capital of Culture ’08 Liverpool, they have built a home for every person who ever wanted to fly, but didn’t know how.

With their growing company of highly trained aerial and performance staff, they are changing the face of aerial performance through not only their site-specific corporate shows, hugely popular festival touring and spectacular new show As the World Tipped - which is one of the UK’s largest ever outdoor theatre shows- but also through investing in their community offer-ing work placements and teaching the aerialists of tomorrow through three degree modules in aerial performance available at Edge Hill Uni-versity. What Wired can offer is so much more than performers, choreographers, climbers or teachers. They are dreamers, they are achiev-ers…and they can fly.

The Work: As the World Tipped (55 minutes) A real life disaster movie performed live in the night sky! This ambitious and extraordinary piece of aerial theatre tells a powerful tale of ecological crisis. Combining dramatic film and visuals with breath-taking aerial performance, it confronts one of the most pressing issues for the planet with spectacle, humour and emotion.

Work ranges from touring stage performances, to site-specific events, interactive installations for galleries, foyers, public spaces and shop fronts as well as com-missions for other dance companies, youth and community groups (including large-scale com-munity projects). YFNS’ unique artistic vision is jointly fashioned by two artistic directors work-ing in different, but mutually complementary, disciplines; each being renowned internation-ally for their work.

Yael and Nic’s work generates of a sense of intimacy in live performance and digital installa-tion, which acknowledges the physicality and presence of the viewer. Works offer acute ob-servations on the everyday and the mundane using pedestrian movement and gesture as well as working with dancers and non-dancers as performers within digital works.

Previously associate artists with Woking Dance Festival (2010), both Yael and Nic have pre-sented their work throughout the UK and inter-nationally over the last 18 years. The company works with a range of partners including: South East Dance, Chichester University, Swindon Dance, Landsdown Centre for Electronic Arts, Middlesex University, Dance South West and Bewegungs Art, Germany.
