7, the two Striders lowered the paceand dropped Yara. They then sweptto a dual victory in 52:28. Runninghis last Strider race before movingto New Jersey, Tom Bowmasterthundered to a 53:40 fourth placefinish.

Dominating the women's compet-ition, Buffy Gavigan cruised allalone to a 1:06:36 victory. ValerieGui lfoi1 and Linda Lash completedthe scoring for the Howard Countywomen's effort, with Guilfoilbreaking the 70 minute barrier andfinishing as the seventh woman.

The Howard County team wasdisadvantaged by the loss of severalkey runners, including Jon and EllenHowland (vacationing in Hawaii),Lisa Lowe (tendonitis), and BenMathews (recovering from marathon).Montgomery county won by a mere 19points, showing the difference oneor two good runners can make.

The Striders have seldom lostthe Challenge Trophy. The BaltimoreRoad Runners won the contest in1984, and this year marks the firsttime Montgomery County has won.

A total of ten teams fromthroughout Maryland participated inthe Challenge Race. Each teamneeded a minimum of 14 men and 3women to be included in the scoring.Teams accumulated points by the fin-ishing positions of its top runners, with the lowest score winning. Al-together, 219 runners (182 men, 37women) competed in the race.

Surprisingly, the usually-strong DC Road Runners did not fieldenough runners for full teams, andthe Bal timore Road Runners did notpresent a significant threat to theStriders.

PRESIDENT'S ARTICLEP. GoLdenberg

Thanks to all of you who havewished me well as the new presidentof the Striders. On behalf of allthe members , I also want to thankPhi1 Riehl for serving as Striderpresident for the past two years. Ithink we have a great club and Ilook forward to working with all ofyou to make it even better. I havealready asked the Board members tosuggest pet projects that they thinkwe should undertake. Let us knowwhich club acitivities you enjoymost and least, as well as which newevents and activities you would liketo see the Striders sponsor. If youreally think we should undertake anew event or activity, why notchampion the project yourself? Youcan be sure that the Board of Dir-ectors and I will go out of our wayto support you if you personally un-dertake a worhtwhile activity.

Someone who continues to goourt of his way gor the club isGerry Gears, who will be serving asrace director for the Clyde's racethis year. Clyde's will be onSunday, April 30, at 8 am, and onceagain there wi 11 be a one-miLe funrun in addition to the 10K. Gerryhas been hard at work for monthsnow, but he can still use all thehelp he can get. We can usevolunteers from right now up untilrace day.

By now you all know that welost the 10 mile RRCA Team Champ-ionship Race in a squeaker to Mont-gomery County. The time is ripe tomake a commitment to recapture thetrophy next year and, for goodmeasure, trounce them at BrigthonDam in September. All in all, though, I thought the race went welland we should congradulate first-time race director Jack Wilkinsonand his wife Jeanne. They did asuperb job.

At the last Board Meeting(March 7), Ben Mathews announced

that he is leaving the area for FortLauderdale, Florida. Ben is one ofthose special people who always makethat extra effort. A superiormasters' runner, he regularly turnsin times that would be PRs for mostrunners twenty years younger. Benhas also been in charge of trafficcontrol at our major races, was therace director of last year's MetricMarathon, and has served on theBoard as Chairman of the Nominationsand Selections Commi ttee. In hisrole as a director, Ben has stagedthe last two Annual Meetings- alwaysthe main social event of the Strideryear.

For those of us who areregulars at the Saturday morningBagel Runs, Ben has loyally placedwater out every week for years. Twoyears ago, when someone stole thewater on a hot summer morning, itwas Ben who gave up his next week'srun in a valiant effort to apprehendthe culprit. While the perpetratorwas never caught, we can only assumethat word of Ben's stakeout was re-sponsible for the criminal'sapparent departure from the area.

In grati tude for all Ben hasdone for the club, we have made hima Life Member. Also, the Boardvoted to pay his air fare so he canrun in this year's Metric Marathon.Ben, we're going to miss you.

TRIATHLON CONTRIBUTION

D. Tripp

When the Columbia Triathon wasoriginally founded. the Board ofDirectors of the Howard CountyStriders declined the opportunity totake an active role in the event'smanagemen t. A t the time. it wasfelt that the Strider's resourceswere being spread thin enoughwi thout taking on addi tional majorprograms. Over the years. thereality has been that many Stridersparticipate in or work on what hasbecome one of the premiere tri-athlons held in the Uni ted States.(Triathon magazine recently ratedthe Columbia Triathlons on the theTOP 10 in the East.)

This year the Board and theorganizers of the Triathlon havereached. we hope. a mutually bene-ficial agreement. The Striders willconduct the run part of the event.be responsible for timing and gen-erating the raw results data. andprovide at Least 100 volunteers towork during the event. In return.the Triathlon will make a $1000.00contribution to the Striders. Allvolunteers will also receive color-ful T-shirts. a great post-raceparty. and be eligible for randomprizes.

We Striders appreciate the Tri-athlon's recognition of our members'efforts. but now we must produce. The 1989 Columbia Triathlon willstart at 7 am on Sunday. May 21.Please contact Paul Goldenberg (730-3566) or Dave Tripp (730-4499) forinformation and to offer yourservices.
