    1 General1.1 Introduction

The Radio Commander (RC) is the Operation and Maintenance system for the BaseStation Systems (BSS) for GSM networks. The Radio Commander is composed of twosubsystems: the Operation and Maintenance Processor (OMP) and the Operation andMaintenance Terminal (OMT). The two subsystems are connected by means of a LAN(Local Area Network) configuration. The OMP for GSM networks is connected to the Base Station Systems (BSS) by a linkthat is implemented either by means of a point-to-point connection or by the NewBridgeboard. The connectivity with remote RC is ensured by the X.25 Router whose routing table isset by installation and configuration through the configuration tool.Even if the RC system is inserted in a pre-existent network, functionality is ensured bythe Bridge module, whose configuration enables or disables access from and to hostswhich are external to the RC network segment.

    1.2 Purpose of the document

The purpose of the document is to provide all the information necessary for the correctset up of the Radio Commander. This includes checking the installed hardware (ifnecessary) and the correct installation of both the OMT and the OMP software.

    1.3 Precautions

The power supply is 220 V for all of the components, but for the US and Asian marketsthe power supply is 110 V for all of the components used on the desk and 220 V for thecomponents installed on the rack. When working with the devices observe the warning indications. During the removal of components/modules turn off the devices. Display a signboard indicating that maintenance work is being performed. The operator requires a thorough knowledge of the composition and operation of the

device and must be a qualified electrician. All devices of the RC system must be correctly turned on/off according to the relevantoperating procedures. For the OMP, the correct shutdown procedures must be executedbefore turning off the power supply of the OMP.In order to avoid damages, turn off each device when making any changes, such as theremoval and/or replacement of modules and/or components. In order to avoid any damage while handling electrostatic sensitive components, theuser should wear an antistatic bracelet grounded with a cord. All electrostatic sensitivecomponents are labelled as such.

2.1 Check Delivered SW and Licenses

You have to order some licenses before the SW can be installed:Licenses are necessary for the several SW packages (in detail see 3.7 Table of SW-Li-censes).Separate licenses are required for each client to be installed! In the following a step by step procedure is described to get the licenses from SUN.

1 Collect all the "Proof of License CertificatesThese sheets are delivered with your SW packages. Each sheet contain the fol-lowing information about the SW package: the product name of the SW package the version of the product of the SW package the rights to use and the serial number of the SW package

2 Collect the informationFor each client you need the following information: the hostname of the client the host-ID of the client (MAC-address) the product name(s) of the SW package(s) the version of the product(s) of the SW package(s) and the serial number(s) of the SW package(s)

Installation and TestRadio Commander BR 6.0

3 Request the licenses from SUNWrite an email to SUN Micro Systems to request the license files. Below yousee an example for the content of the mail.

Normally you will get the licenses from SUN Micro Systems within one day. Ifyou need the licenses very urgently, you can make a telephone call to SUN. Thelicenses will be available then within half an hour. For the telephone numberfrom SUN check the following internet page: http://www.sun.com/licensing/. Ineach case you needs a fax address or better a e-mail address, that SUN couldgive the response to you.

4 Make the licenses_combined FileSUN Micro Systems will send you back the licenses in the form of one or moreASCII files. Combine the contents of the ASCII files in one ASCII file This file must not contain a empty line The entries SERVER and DAEMON are allowed only one time in the file Transfer this ASCII file to your SUN workstation Use the tool "dos2unix" to convert the file into UNIX format (this tool works

only with a Solaris computer, e.g. the OMT, not with a Windows PC!) Rename this file to "licenses_combined"An example of a "licenses_combined" file you can see in + ......3.7 Table of

    SW-Licenses

Installation and TestRadio Commander BR 6.0

Installation Test Manual ITMNCheck Delivered SW and Licenses

5 Bring the licenses File to your OMT

Now store the file licenses_combined in /tmpb cp //licenses_combined /tmp/licenses_combined

In this way create the licenses_combined file for each client (OMP or OMT) withall the required licenses.

6 How to put the licenses_combined to your OMPRegarding that the OMP has no floppy drive, there are several ways to put yourlicenses_combined file to your OMP: You has the possibility to use any SUN workstation in the LAN, to transfer the

licenses_combined file to your OMP per ftp. You install first an OMT (which has a floppy drive) and afterwards you install

the OMP until the SUN Solaris 2.6 Operating system is completed. Now youcan create and transfer your licenses_combined file per ftp from your OMT tothe OMP. (This is the recommended method, see below.)

iYour OMT must be installed, before you can store the licenses_combined file on it.

iUp to now, only the OMP needs above mentioned licenses!

    2.2 Installation of OMT

This procedure is intended to provide informations on how to install the Solaris 2.6 oper-ating system and the RC application SW on an OMT Sun Workstation. (For further infor-mation about the OS installation, refer to Solaris 2.6 System Administrator's Manual). With reference to the release documentation, check that you have all necessary CDs foryour installation. If there a NIS server is used, check whether the NIS client is installed (is a part of Solaris2.6 installation). If you have several CD-sets, all of the OMTs can be installed at the same time. EachOMT can installed in the same way (as described in this procedure).

This procedure is used in the following cases: for first time installation of the operating system; when the system is unable to work, or cannot perform a boot as a consequence of

an unrecoverable situation; The following installation works as well for CPUs with more than 400 MHz. Therefore nospecial CD is necessary anymore.

i You must be a superuser (root) for the OMT to perform all the steps in this procedure.

i Because of the OMP has no floppy drive, we recommend, that you first install one OMT(the OMTs have a floppy drive). From the installed OMT you can then transfer your file"licenses_combined" to the OMP. The OMP must have installed with the OperatingSystem (SUN Solaris 2.6) for this transfer.

i Be aware: In the procedure are some very long commands, which you have to enter ina UNIX terminal window. Be aware, that these commands can extend over severallines in this manual!

i Be sure that the tray of the CD-ROM drive is not blocked while the whole installationprocedure, because of sometimes the tray opens automatically, triggered by the instal-lation routine.

Prior to installation, check that you have all required licenses for the SW to be installed(see PROC: Check Delivered SW and Licenses). With reference to the release documentation, check that you have all necessary CDs foryour installation. If there a NIS server is used, check whether the NIS client is installed (is a part of Solaris2.6 installation).Make sure that all physical devices (tape units, external disk devices, communicationunits, printers, ...) were powered on before starting with the installation procedure.Make sure that the Jumper (P601) must be installed on clock board.

This procedure is used in the following cases: for first time installation of the operating system; when the system is unable to work, or cannot perform a boot as a consequence of

    an unrecoverable situation;

The following procedure describes the installation of an OMP with a console/terminalDEC VT100 (without a graphic card).

i You must be a superuser (root) for the OMP to perform all the steps in this procedure.

i Be aware: In the procedure are some very long commands, which you have to enter ina UNIX terminal window. Be aware, that these commands can extend over severallines in this manual!

i To evaluate a value on the installation screen use the cursor buttons on the keyboard. To select the value use the [ENTER]-button or the space key.

i Be sure that the tray of the CD-ROM drive is not blocked while the whole installationprocedure, because of sometimes the tray opens automatically, triggered by the instal-lation routine.

i For the first time only and for Server 4500 only:Verify that the disk board has been inserted into slot 3 of the server; otherwise thepositions of the disk board and of the lower I/O board must be inverted: place the diskboard into slot 3 and the lower I/O board into slot 5.

If the message The RC system is up in this logfile appears, the application hasstarted successfully. As an alternative you can use the messages displayed on the console to checkthe OMT application start-up. For this you have to open a console window in theCDE. At the moment the output during the start-up are: OMT: RC System is coming up ... OMT: Layer started - 0 OMT: Layer started - 1

OMT: Layer started - 3 OMT: The RC System is UP.

Only after the message "RC System is up" is displayed a GUI or CLI sessioncan be started. At the end of the FIRST activation (after a SCRATCH installation), the OMP andthe OMTs listed inside the ium_configuration.cfg have been registered in RadioCommander (according to /var/RC/install/omcconf.txt) so that it is possible tostart the network editor in order to fully configure the OMC.
