GUEST SPEAKER: DIETICIAN (DR. MANASIDAKE)
G rade 2 students had an interesting session with
dietitian Dr. Manasi on the topic “Eat healthy-Role of
Dietitian in making the right choice” as part of our on
going UOI healthy and balanced lifestyle. They learnt
about dietitians and their roles, healthy eating habits
and also got some tips on healthy lifestyle.
Here are some tips by Dr. Manasi for students:
Sleep well
Have warm milk before sleeping as it’s a natural
sedative.
Avoid too much sugar and soft drinks. They make
you feel sleepy.
Do not skip meals.
Eat about 5 pieces of almonds and walnuts as they
are best memory enhancer.
Drink a lot of water.
Reflections by students:
Dhruan 2-C: Today I met Dr. Manasi and learnt about vitamins and other nutrients. I had a lot of fun.
Atharva 2-C: I learnt a new term “obese”.
Ayan 2-B: Madam taught us that little amount of fat is important for us because when we fall down they
help us not to get hurt so much.
Shyla 2-B: Dietitians go to villages themselves (community service) to talk to poor people about healthy
habits as they cannot go to a clinic.
Amitha 2-A: I am very happy. She explained very nicely. We learnt so much about healthy habits.
Rithvik 2-A: Dr. Manasi told us if you want to be fit, you have to eat healthy food.

I am very proud to be an Indian but I am also very sad that so many people were put in jail, hung and
were killed. All this was done to give us a free country. But the day the Indian Flag went up,
Independence was the best day in people’s lives, especially those who fought for the freedom of India.
– Keyana Marfatia 4A
In our school, we did a fabulous activity. We had to choose any freedom fighter. I chose to become
Sarojini Naidu. We had to get information and had to present it in the class. Sarojini Naidu started
contributing towards freedom struggle by joining politics during the wake of partition of Bengal in 1905.
Thank you for organizing this activity.

IT’S INDIAS’INDEPENDENCE DAY, SO SAY IT OUT LOUD…
FOR OUR COUNTRY WE ARE PROUD!
Here are a few reflections and pictures of students
from Grade 4A on how they celebrated
Independence Day and what they think and feel
about freedom fighters.
In this activity, I was Annie Besant. She was a
prominent British Socialist, orator and a supporter
of Irish and Indian Self-rule. She influenced the
evolution of Women’s and Workers’ rights. I
enjoyed this activity a lot.

We all had a great day.
Finally it was Independence day.
We all had dressed up as Freedom Fighters,
and we were dressed fancily, not in clusters.
All were in for photo shoots
but had made lines for information loots.
After all it was a fun day
because it was Independence Day.
- Tejas Chakrabarti 4B
Independence Day at school was fun, fun, fun. It was really a great day. We played games and took
pictures. Even though the day was tiring, I can't wait for another special day like this.

The little mermaid
The little mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson is
my most favourite fairytale because it has lots of
love, thrill, magic, suspense and lots of fun. It is
the best fairytale movie and book I have ever read
so far!

FASCINATING FAIRY TALES
For our English lessons, we do a lot of researching! This is fun. Lots of
discussions on the reading that we have done or on the films we have watched!
Recently, we are studying short stories from our anthology. Also, we have been
viewing videos on The Selfish Giant and Dragon Rock. These are great fairy
tales in my opinion.
Thumbelina
My favourite fairy tale is Thumbelina by Hans Christian
Anderson. It is about a tiny little girl about the size of a
human thumb who is taken away from her family by a toad and
lives with a mouse for the winter till she finds her way back
home. She was also almost forced to marry a mole but she
helps a swallow who is hurt and on the day of the marriage,
the swallow carries her away and brings her to the pixies that
live in her family’s garden. At last she finds her home! I
learned that no matter what your size, if you have courage in
your heart, you can do anything you wish to. It also taught me
about seeing life from another perspective. Overall, I think
this story is very creative and pretty adventurous. This could
be a perfect book for teaching children that it’s not the size
that matters, but the amount of courage in your heart is what
will help you for the rest of your life.

Cinderella
The fairy tale I want to always read is Cinderella. I
like it because it talks about a young girl about my age
and how she is ill-treated by her stepmother. She is
forced to do all the work in the house all by herself
though she is a part of the family. But, at the end of
the story there is joy for all.

Aladdin and the magic lamp
Long, long time ago there lived a boy named Aladdin who
found it difficult as he lived in utter poverty. One day
an old man walked up to him and said he was his uncle.
As Aladdin had lost his father and did not know if he
really had an uncle. The next day, this uncle gave
Aladdin good clothes to wear and a tour of the city
gardens. But, this old man was none other than a wicked
magician who wanted to use the services of the boy. So,
he took the boy along with him until they reached a
mountain. The magician lit a fire and murmured some
words the ground beneath them opened. Aladdin was
afraid but the magician assured him that nothing would
happen to him.

MYP
Then the magician told Aladdin to pass through the tunnel, he would then come to a path
with three ways, and he should take right and lead on until he comes to the gardens. Right
in the centre of it would be a lamp that is glowing; he should put off the light, remove the
oil from it and bring the lamp back without touching. When he reached the magician was
glad and reached out his hand to take the lamp. Pull me out first, said Aladdin but the
magician refused. So Aladdin too refused to give lamp. So the angry old man closed the
ground above him. Sobbing away, Aladdin’s hand rubbed the lamp by mistake and out came
a genie! “You are my master and I will do anything you command”, it said. “Take me home”,
said Aladdin and before he knew it, he was with his mother. He related the entire story
to his mother. She summoned the genie to bring forth those shiny fruits and food. Life
went well for a few years as every wish of theirs came true. One day, he saw Jasmine, the
daughter of the king and fell in love with her. His mother and he impressed the king with
rich gifts. Looking at this the king decided to marry his daughter with the boy. Aladdin
wished for a palace and the same was granted for the newly married couple. The news of
the grand palace spread far and the evil magician got to know of it. So one day he went
with a cart full of lamps shouting new for old. As Jasmine did not know the value of the
old lamp she exchanged it for a new one. And soon the magician transposed the palace and
the princess to Africa. Hearing this, Aladdin set out to rescue his love. With the help of
the flying carpet and his beloved monkey he found the lamp and summoned the genie to
redo the act. He then punished the magician by adding poison to his drink that led him to
death. Thereafter Aladdin, his mother and Jasmine lived happily forever.
I really enjoy reading this story again and again! It is full of suspense!

MY FAMILY TREE
In our French class, we were assigned with a project called,
“My family tree”.
I started out with my idea of a Christmas tree theme which
turned out to be brilliant. I was so happy!
On it I put circular flags, pop out pictures and the tree too
turned out to be a pop out! I also named the family members
in French; as it was my French assignment.
I had lots of fun making this Christmas tree themed FAMILY
TREE.
My work was judged the best in the class.
I feel proud of myself for this project.
Thank you Ms Rashmi Talreja!

RBKIA ELECTS NEW STUDENT COUNCIL
On the 17th of August 2015, the school faculty nominated students from grades 7 to 11 for
the respective student council posts. These students gave moving speeches and appealed to
the students to vote for them. There was rigor and excitement all around the school. The
campaigning went on for two days and on the 19th of August the students cast their votes to
select their chosen representatives to the Student Council.
After the elections the atmosphere was intense as nominees anxiously waited for the results
to be announced. The entire school assembled in the auditorium to receive the results. The
winning candidates were announced amidst cheering and clapping from excited students.
Many of those candidates that had not won were seen congratulating the winners as a sign of
concession. This was truly a democratic exercise that prepares us for our future roles in
decision making and participation in national affairs.

CAS - TREE PLANTING PROJECT.
It all started with the idea of giving back something to
Mother Nature. Then we came up with a proposal to
plant saplings in our school garden. The minute our
CAS coordinator gave us the green light, we were on
it. The first task was to find and negotiate a deal with
the nursery. So the next day I went over to a nursery
and fixed the deal, this taught us negotiating for a fair
pact and budgeting as well.
On the planting day, we (DP1) and DP2 students and
our CAS coordinators came together and went to the
gardener who guided us on the process of planting the
saplings in the pot. We all learnt how to transfer the
plant from the temporary bag to the pot, it was a new
experience for us and we really enjoyed doing it
together. The activity brought us; friends and
coordinators together, as well as closer to nature. It
feels amazing planting your own plant; you start to
have feelings of ownership. I feel this will make us
more responsible. This was a great kick start for our
CAS projects and I personally can’t wait to visit my
plant again!

GUJARATI DIVAS
O n the 18th of August the DP students celebrated
Gujarati Divas with our CAS teachers Ms. Rashmi
and Ms. Rizwana. We came early to school to help
our CAS teachers to decorate the 7th floor with a
rangoli at the entrance of the floor to welcome them
and also decorated the corridor. The event started
during the lunch break and we changed into
traditional Guajarati clothes before munching
different traditional delicacies, such as jalebi, dokhla
and ganthia in the canteen. Everyone enjoyed lunch
so much that we finished everything! After lunch
there were many activities that took place such as
the pot decorating competition, where different
groups were asked to compete in decoration of pots
and the group that would win this competition
would get a certificate. We enjoyed this activity and
we all tried our best to make an amazing and
dazzling pot with the stuff we got from home. There
was also mehndi for the girls of DP 1 & 2, which
saw girls get various spectacular designs on their
hands that were done by some ladies and they did a
job. To crown the series of events we finally had a
class where Dr. Hoskeri gave an introductory
lecture on how Guajarati was developed from
different languages. This was an amazing experience
for all of us and we learnt a lot about how the
Guajarati language has formed. We hope to have
similar events in the future.
