Career Edge registrants must demonstrate significant English or bilingual (English and French) workplace communications skills (e.g. language fluency, articulation and ability to elaborate on their educational background, work experience and career goals) during an in-person pre-screening behavioural-style interview conducted by a Career Edge Applicant Screener. Typically, Career Edge registrants have a master’s level education or higher and over eight years of professional, mid-level international work experience in their field.

Q: Who is considered the intern’s employer during the six-month internship period? Since the intern is not a full-time employee or contractor working directly for the Associate Host, during the six-month internship period, Career Edge Organization, the organization that provides the Career Edge paid internship program, has the required employment contract with the Career Edge intern and manages the intern’s payroll on behalf of the Associate Host.

While the Associate Host coach should be the first contact for any intern questions or issues during the internship period, Career Edge Organization is also available to support both the intern and the Associate Host coach to ensure a successful internship experience. Within the first month of the internship, a Career Edge Organization Client Relations Manager will follow up with the intern and coach separately to ensure that all expectations are clear and that the internship is progressing well.

Q: What are the hours of work for Career Edge interns?Interns typically work 35 to 40 hours per week, usually in line with the Associate Host’s normal hours of work for their own full-time employees.

Q: What support does Career Edge Organization provide to Associate Host organizations?During the initial intern hiring process, a Career Edge Organization Client Relations Manager will provide hands-on support to the designated hiring manager and/or assigned Associate Host coach to:

§§ Develop an effective internship posting; and

§§ Navigate the Career Edge website to post the internship opportunity, view candidate applications and process the intern hire.

Q: Throughout the six-month internship period, Career Edge Organization will:§§ Assign a Client Relations Manager as a single point of

contact for the Associate Host hiring manager and/or coach and intern;

§§ Administer the intern’s payroll and answer any intern payroll inquiries;

§§ Suggest effective, ongoing intern coaching activities to ensure a successful internship; and

§§ Provide ongoing support and consultation for any Associate Host inquiries during the internship period, such as intern payroll, intern working conditions, statutory holidays and requests to hire the intern full-time.

Q: Can the Associate Host extend a Career Edge internship beyond six months?It is possible to extend the internship term to a maximum of 12 months. In this case, the Associate Host should discuss the request with the Career Edge Organization Client Relations Manager.

Q: What if the Career Edge intern resigns during the internship period?

Since Career Edge internships are providing internationally

qualified professionals with their first career-launching,

resume-building work experience in Canada, an intern

resignation is an unlikely occurrence. However, if the intern

does resign before the scheduled end of their internship, the

intern must give two weeks’ advance written notice to both

the Associate Host and Career Edge Organization.

Q: How can the Associate Host hire the Career Edge intern full-time?

The Associate Host can hire the intern at the end of the

internship or complete the internship early and hire the

intern as a new employee. In such cases, the Associate

Host should coordinate this request with Career Edge

Organization. There are no additional fees associated with

hiring an intern full-time at any time.
