Everyone knew that Baz Luhrmann would have a lot to live up to when he decided to recreate The Great Gatsby – a novel widely held to be one of the greatest of the twentieth century. But after six years in the making, and with a glittering cast of Hollywood’s finest, the director has triumphed with this decadent take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece.

Set on Long Island in the Roaring Twenties, Fitzgerald’s tale details the excess, decadence and ostentatious glamour which could be witnessed in the era’s affluent elite. Baz Luhrmann has created the dazzling visuals to match.

In the making since 2008, the movie largely stays faithful to Fitzgerald’s original plot, following would-be writer Nick Carraway as he moves to Long Island from the Midwest, to find himself living next door to the mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Renowned for his wild and frequent parties, Gatsby is also an elusive character, who becomes a subject of fascination for Nick as he finds himself increasingly drawn into his lavish and mysterious world. Despite his

glamorous lifestyle and aloof persona, Gatsby harbours a secret obsession – a long-standing love for Nick’s cousin Daisy. Played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, the young lovers eventually reunite, but their dream soon unravels.

DiCaprio puts in a brilliant performance as the enigmatic Gatsby: charming, suave and sweetly appealing, he tackles the role with his usual commitment and sensitivity. Here is an actor who knows what Fitzgerald intended. Similarly compelling performances come from Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and her boorish husband, Tom.

Fans of Luhrmann’s earlier work will not be disappointed. Echoing the vibrant cinematic style he developed in Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet, among others, the vivid, dizzying special effects provide a colour-drenched depiction

of Fitzgerald’s classic tale. Selected to be the opening film at Cannes this year, there could not have been a better choice.

Although some have criticised for its lack of subtlety, this is a movie that should be taken on its own terms. Yes, the visuals are brash and sometimes dazzling, but this is also a reimagining of Fitzgerald’s novel that reflects the opulence and excess that was integral to the plot. And while Fitzgerald may have been critiquing the era’s vacuous decadence, Luhrmann positively celebrates it.

Supported by a high-quality soundtrack featuring original tunes from the likes of Florence and the Machine, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and will.i.am, the mixture of rap, rock and pop, blended with jazzy horns and soulful melodies, perfectly encapsulates the sound and mood of the Roaring Twenties with a modern-day twist.

Available to watch onboard now, this is a movie not to be missed.

Children and parents alike have long awaited a follow-up to the fantastic Monsters, Inc., and it’s finally here with the arrival of a prequel: Monsters University. This movie had Pixar’s second biggest opening weekend ever, taking just over $80m, but what’s it all about? Well, back are the voices of Billy Crystal as the one-eyed green monster Mike Wazowski and John Goodman as our big furry loveable friend James P. Sullivan (Sulley).

Mike Wazowski has always dreamed of being a scarer, and with some hard work and determination is accepted into the prestigious Monsters University. Here he meets Sulley for the first time but rather than hitting it off, the pair soon develop a rivalry as they compete to be the top scarer on their course and only one of them makes it into the top fraternity: Roar Omega Roar.

Only a lucky few are granted an escape to this sanctuary: they are carefully selected for their skills and experiences and sent over in a series of ‘pilgrimages’. We join the action as the tenth pilgrimage is about to embark on the crossing, among which is the Shannon family.

After an emotional start, which includes a daring prison break, the Shannons

enter a world with clean air and blue skies, but also one where dinosaurs roam just beyond the fence. We follow the family as they settle into their new home and roles in the colony. They must also contend with roaming carnosaurs, mysterious cave drawings and the revelation that the politics of the old world have found their way into the new.

This ambitious, high-budget show has a cinematic feel; it is of no surprise that it is produced by Jurassic Park director, Steven Spielberg. At its heart though is a story about a family on a remarkable journey, fighting to stay together and preserve the ideals of a brave new world. Not to be missed!

Coming up to 20 years in the business, Grammy award-winning artists Daft Punk continue to do what they do best ‘going back to move forward’. Random Access Memories is the fourth studio album from the duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. A huge five years in the making, can these robots from the future live up to the anticipation and hype surrounding their latest release?

As with many long-awaited releases, Daft Punk’s latest journey has been blighted by leaked tracks; however, Random Access Memories has risen from the flames, like The Terminator, seemingly unscathed. Using this potential kiss of death to its advantage, first single “Get Lucky” claims the most streams in a day for a single track in the history of Spotify for the United States and UK.

Collaboration is the main order of the day for Random Access Memories, a miniseries of documentaries, The Collaborators, can be found on the duo’s website, providing excellent background and further understanding of the project and its ambitions.

Some of the biggest names in music to date bring direction and narrative to this album, featuring the likes of Pharrell Williams, N.E.R.D, and legendary producer Nile Rodgers, famed for his work with Chic, David Bowie and Madonna to name but a few, “Get Lucky” is an instant hit on the first listen.

“Instant Crush” featuring Julian Cassablancas, weaves in The Strokes’ frontman’s unique flair of electronic rock pop through a vocoder, resulting in a sorrowfully haunting, yet toe-tapping composition. “Lose Yourself to Dance” again features Pharrell Williams and further scintillating disco riffs from Nile Rodgers, a slightly more subtle, smoother slide than the funked-up “Get Lucky”.

Embracing and acknowledging the sounds of the past, with a firm stance in the technologically obsessed present, “Giorgio of Moroder” begins with

dialogue detailing Moroder’s venture into music, paying homage to the unity of 70’s music and sounds of the future. Ultimately, Moroder’s destiny resulted in establishing dance music as a genre with Donna Summer.

Daft Punk’s wish to remain anonymous, referring to themselves as robots from the future (a nod to Paul Williams’ 1974 Phantom of Paradise), creates a unique opportunity, allowing the listener to enjoy their work disconnected from the reality of who they physically are.

Following their 2008 rarely acknowledged release of the ‘Tron: Legacy’ soundtrack, Random Access Memories looks to succeed in becoming a firm favourite in all music lovers’ collections. A superb mix of old-school analogue sounds, this album blends and spans most musical genres - reaching levels of theatricality in points. ENTERTAINMENT NAVIGATIONPlease use the following guide to navigate through the

wide variety of entertainment available on your flight. Look at

the handset illustration and key definitions to understand

the specific functions of the control. You can access these

keys at any time during the interactive screening.

For further information on how to move through the

interactive process, press the right arrow key on the

welcome screen and an instructional page will be

displayed. To navigate through the entertainment options,

use the up and down keys and make your selection by

pressing the right arrow key. The left arrow key will take

you back to the previous level.

KEY DEFINITIONS

LEFT: The left arrow key takes the user back to the

previous level.

RIGHT: The right arrow key is used to SELECT an option.

UP: The up arrow key takes the user to the previous

item/page.

DOWN: The down arrow key takes the user to the next

item/page.

SELECT: This button also performs the SELECT function.

START: The button labelled START performs the SELECT

function except in the case of media, where it directly

launches the application.

GREEN: This button performs the function of ‘Pause’ when

in AVOD and takes the passenger directly to the main

menu when in the interactive mode.

BLUE: This button performs the function of ‘Forward’ when

in AVOD mode.

RED: This button performs the function of ‘Stop’ when in AVOD mode.

YELLOW: This button performs the function of ‘Rewind’ when in AVOD mode.

MODE: This button toggles between audio, video and interactive modes.

SPECIAL CASESWhile in on-demand audio

ADD/DELETE FROM MY PLAYLIST: The yellow button adds/deletes a track to/from My Playlist.

While watching movies or TV programmes

STOP MOVIE / TV PROGRAMME: The red button on the handset stops the movie / TV programme the passenger is in,

and returns to the On-Demand Movies or On-Demand TV menu of the interactive mode.

RESUME MOVIE / TV PROGRAMME: Pressing START or SELECT resumes the selected movie / TV programme.

SERVICES CONTROL UNIT OPERATION

• Located on the inside of the seat you will find the audio

jack and entertainment system control unit.

• Insert the plug end of twin male connectors into the

audio jack . The male plug connector pins are sized to

fit into the audio jack in one way.

• For AUDIO-ONLY entertainment, push the mode button

that displays a symbol.

• For MOVIE VIDEO entertainment, push the mode button

that displays a symbol.

• To change CHANNELS or headset VOLUME level

press either the up or down arrow buttons next to the

choices.

• A channel number will be displayed in the small window

of the control unit, showing your selection in either audio

or movie video modes.

RAISING THE PERSONAL MONITOR SCREEN

• Lift the centre arm rest cover to expose the 8.4”

personal monitor.

• Pull up the top corner of the personal monitor, raising

it to full extension.

• Turn the monitor mounting arm and adjust it to a

comfortable viewing angle.

• Control buttons on the monitor can be used for the

following:

Adjust screen brightness to decrease.

Adjust screen brightness to increase.

The centre button should not be used.

• The personal seat monitor should be kept stowed for

taxi, take-off and landing.
