There is little doubt the theological reflections, debates, and understanding (also interpretation) of Martin Luther had a significant impact on the 16th century reformation of the church that would come to bear his name. The Lutheran Reformation was aided by the expanding availability of Bibles and other theological writings in the native language of the people. While Luther’s 95 Thesis got the ball rolling in 1517, some view Luther’s Heidelberg Disputation as the start of his popularity. A disputation was simply a formalized method of debate which sought truth in theology and the sciences and which Martin Luther was to be a part in 1518 at the University of Heidelberg. Here his prepared thesis and short proofs would offer a sort of new beginning for theology. This month’s devotion is from his twenty- eighth and last theological thesis (see above). “The first part is clear because the love of God, which dwells in human beings, loves sinners, evil persons, fools, and weaklings in order to make them righteous, good, wise, and strong. Recently Pastor Adam preached a sermon asking us, “What is your call?” As we move ahead this month with school starting and programs ramping back up, we ask that of ourselves and our community of faith at Cross of Hope. What is our call? What does God have in mind for us? Where is He leading us? I’m excited to see where God is calling our community of faith. As I write this article, our congregation is hosting our first Family Promise week. Wow! What an experience for me to eat, serve, and share God’s love with our guests who happen to be homeless. I believe Cross of Hope is called to do what was in our Gospel in July - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind”; and, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Through the Family Promise ministry, I have seen

members of our congregation showing their love for their neighbor by feeding them, spending time with them, helping them, driving them, and staying with them through the night as well as ministering to them and showing them how they love the Lord their God. It may seem odd that I shift from Family Promise to PNM, but here goes. Over the past 4-5 months our Council has been working to implement cost savings in our utility bills. We are doing so with the hope that with these cost savings, more of the financial gifts we receive can be used for social ministry, outreach, and service to God’s people. Again we are being called to love our Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourselves, not only through volunteering and programs, but also with our financial resources. Please help us by doing simple things like turning off lights and minding the thermostats. At our July Council meeting the COH Council approved doing a book study called “Unlocking The Heart”. We committed to spending 6 weeks together learning how to be disciples and share God’s love. In

Through this ministry we are the Body of Christ, engaging together fully and actively in worship. This summer we welcome Mary-Louise

Gordon-Toledo to the flower ministry, and we give thanks to Ruth Hinkel and Barb Ostby for their many years serving in this ministry. Mary-Louise is excited to share her gifts and love of the art of flower arrangement with COH. Please welcome her! She has a lot of knowledge and experience in this area that she'd enjoy sharing with you. Being involved in these different aspects of worship truly enriches our life in Christ and our worship experience. Family Promise Ministry at Cross of Hope “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took me in.” Matthew 25:35

For one week in July, Cross of Hope took these words of the Gospel very literally as we housed and fed four families from the Family Promise of Albuquerque program. Our school classrooms became bedrooms, our kitchen alcove was a daily buffet line and some of our members became chefs and chauffeurs. Thirteen people (five adults and eight children, ranging in age from 15 years to 3 months) called 6104 Taylor Ranch Road their home for a week. And our guests were grateful to do so. They

were in a safe and friendly environment and they had full stomachs. Their children had a place to play and act like children. Because this was Cross of Hope’s first-ever hosting, the undertaking was huge. All the needed supplies had to be collected. Our church members and friends answered that call with amazing generosity. More than 30 people donated mattress pads, sheets, blankets, towels, toiletries, nightlights, books, toys, dvd’s, tissues, cleaning supplies and more. And the guests were grateful for a warm bed and the smile on their child’s face as they watched their favorite movie. More than 35 people donated food for breakfast or to pack a

lunch, or provided a hot meal at dinner time with as much eagerness as might be imagined. The kitchen looked like love just blew in and filled all the shelves and refrigerators with so many delicacies. And they were grateful for satisfied tummies and the cookie crumbs on the cheeks of the children. More than 50 people volunteered their time to host, during the day or over-night, to visit with the families, to drive them to classes, haul cots, hold their babies, find the ibuprofen, wipe messy fingers, set up rooms, clean up rooms and to provide what was needed without judgment. And they were grateful because they knew they were not alone on their journey.

Family Promise is unique in that it strongly advocates and leads the families to independence rather than a continued need to rely on others for their basic needs. Four of the five adults we hosted are employed and one of these families just graduated to their own apartment! Bless you, dear donors and volunteers, for answering the call of the Gospel. Reflections on the Way

Free to Choose “Finally … whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things … And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8)

I always enjoy the end of newscasts which highlight something positive after all the bad news that’s just been reported. Helps me regain some hope and perspective. I know a few people who absolutely refuse to listen to the news. One of my clients, a self-proclaimed “news junkie,” recently announced his intention to unplug from all the extra news alerts he’d been getting, robbing him of time, energy and focus, and greatly increasing his anxiety.

I remember my grandmother once expressing her doubt that a single newscast could possibly sum up everything that happened in a particular day. Of course that’s impossible; it’s the selective presentation of any given news station. My husband,

Dave, and I often note how increasingly biased and sensational news reporting has become. Though Dave is much more a news hound than I am, I respect him or anyone who looks beyond the surface of what’s being reported and does not automatically buy into popular opinion. Better to search instead for the objective facts underlying the event, which often includes various contributors not highlighted or even mentioned in typical news reports and other media. I’m betting that much of the social unrest we are experiencing lately in this country is because many are following popular interpretation of latest events from media without exercising the choice to find out what really happened. This kind of singular, unquestioning focus can make bad situations worse, leading us to profile and assume the worst of each other. We have it bad enough in this country with acts of outside terrorism and its continuing threats without turning on one another. This reminds me of what happens on

a much smaller scale, like when a family experiences some hardship, then take their tension out on each other instead of uniting to work toward solutions and healing.

Life is hard enough as it is without our making it worse. Negative, exaggerated, or downright untrue interpretations can lead to anger, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, poor relationships, and even social violence as we have witnessed. This is not what God intended for us. The Bible is full of instruction to help us live our best lives with hope, meaning and purpose, despite hardship and tragedy. While I don’t believe we should turn away from actual truths—that’s not healthy either—neither should we allow skewed perceptions, generally operating from fear-based thinking, determine how we feel and behave.

I remember a history professor of mine once advising us undergraduates to “question everything.” His intention was to encourage us to actually think, to seek

the truth about a situation rather than blindly accept what we are told, or even how we first perceive something. I believe that’s what God wants us to do, too. He gave us free will to accept Him; therefore we are not slaves to God but free agents to think and choose, the only way we can truly appreciate His way for us. So when we find ourselves feeling empty, hopeless, or angry in response to bad news or our own circumstances, then I believe that’s our signal to look beyond. Philippians 4:8 reminds me that we have a choice on where to direct our attention and energy; that we need not succumb to instinctual fear but can instead focus our conscious minds on what is right and true, what is admirable, lovely, and praiseworthy beyond the darkness. The way I see it, I can add to the darkness in this world or contribute some light. It’s my choice; it’s our choice. And God expects nothing less.

Tim and Holly Nelson, Jenna, Spencer and Maddie return to Cross of Hope to share their experiences as missionaries in Cameroon, Africa. But for me it is much more; it has been a great way to share fellowship and

God’s word with other women who are in the same life situations that I am. One of the most important parts of the MOPPETS program are our workers. These are the lovely people who watch over our little ones so we don’t have to worry about them while we get to share…some uninterrupted adult mommy time.” August 2010 “Prayer Buddies, by Deney Perkins, Prayer Buddies Coordinator. Prayer buddies are assigned to each confirmation student and agree to pray for that student during all three years of confirmation (6th, 7th and 8th.) Your identity won’t be revealed until the end of the confirmation student’s 8th grade year.” “Boy Scout Troop 126 Eagle Holds Court of Honor, by Lois Caipen. We had an unusual number of Eagle Scouts able to attend the Eagle Court of Honor to recognize our newest Eagle Cody Cox. Our Call Committee will convene on August 4 to begin the work of seeking a Senior Pastor for Cross of Hope Church and Schools. Council is also contacting members to become part of a Transition Team that will help the Call Committee with its tasks. The Call Committee Transition Team and Council will all participate in the

meeting with the Rev. Dan Bollman on August 4 for an orientation on the tasks that need to be done as part of preparation for recruiting and interviewing candidates.” “Facts and Myths. Members and friends enjoyed the privilege of honoring eight of our members who are 90+ years of age who include the following: Betty Banks, Mary Jane Brown, Marie Cannoles, Ruth Franz, Stan Socha, Marie Sorensen, Edna Strauss and Jo Threewitt.”

“Turf for Kids, by Robert Bye. This project will save money as the natural turf had to be replaced every year or two. The natural lawn required a great deal of maintenance and had to be watered eight months out of a year. Cross of Hope Elementary School paid 60% of the initial cost. There are now two payments left of about $5,000.00 each.” August 2014 “Welcome Back Pastor Lee. Cross of Hope welcomes back Pastor Russell Lee who will be peaching two Sundays a month over the summer. Pastor Lee has led worship at various times in this congregation’s past. Most recently, Pastor Lee led a multi-week workshop on grief last fall.” “Heroes Special Needs VBS 2014, by Patty Westerfield. Thirty six youth and adult volunteers spent their week sharing God’s love with fourteen very special students. We welcomed new students and their families and reconnected with those who have come in the past. It was a great week of love and laughter.”

August 2015 “Thank You from Pastor Russ and Cheri and family. Thank you people of Cross of Hope Lutheran Church and Schools for your thoughtfulness and prayers during these last few months. We have greatly appreciated your expressions of care for my mom and for us as a family. What Do Banner Babes and Project Linus Have In Common?

Project Linus might sound like a new scheme thought up by Charlie Brown or Lucy, but it is just the opposite. Project Linus was started in 1995 and its goal is to provide security and comfort to children traumatized by natural disasters, family turmoil or illness. The National Headquarters joins with individuals or groups who will make blankets and small quilts for the

children. The Cross of Hope Banner Babes made Project Linus their charity project for this year. On a recent sewing day organized by Banner Babe Dee Gutierrez, the members got together and put together 23 quilts to send off to Project Linus. Banner Babe Bobbi Dopslaf, on her own, completed 22

quilts. These will be mailed off to the Project Linus National Headquarters in Bloomington, Illinois. The Banner Babes sponsor their annual Friendship Tea in November and the money raised from this event is used for the Graduation Quilts for our graduating seniors. Then each year the Banner Babes choose one or several charities to sponsor. This year’s charity was Project Linus. The Banner Babes who have

contributed to this worthwhile project include: Bonnie Armentrout, Kathy Bramley, Nancy Brunson, Diane Carrico, Diana Covington, Bobbi Dopslaf, Ruth Franz, Dee Gutierrez, Doris Herrmann, Sue McWilliam, Sylvia Oelsner, Carol Sabrowsky, Karen Wilson, and Jan Wormwood.

Cross of Hope is looking for someone willing to accept the blessing of stepping into the role of Design Editor for the monthly publication of the Rays of Hope. The Design Editor is a team player on the Rays of Hope Planning Team; attends a

monthly planning meeting for the upcoming publication, receives articles and gathers photos and related graphics for layout and design; uses MS Publisher, has a first draft available for editing around the 22nd of each month; makes edits to current document; and works with the Church Administrator in final stage publication with last minute details.
