MR. PAUL CONWAY (SPAWOOD)
Always Consider the weather and your journey in advance, especially if you don't have air
conditioning in your car. Think about whether the journey is absolutely necessary for your dog.
Make sure your dog has plenty of space in the car and isn't squashed or forced to sit in direct sunlight.
Always make sure there is shade provided: even in an air conditioned car a dog can become too hot if in full sun.
Make sure plenty of stops are taken with lots of water available to drink. Take cold water in a thermos rather than a plastic bottle so it stays cold
rather than being lukewarm. Ice cubes are helpful in a thermos for cooling too.
Be aware of the signs of overheating in dogs, which include panting, disorientation, excessive thirst, dark gums, vomiting, diarrhoea and losing consciousness.
Never
Leave a dog unattended in a car, even with the window open and water available. Take them out of the car and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade
and water or take them with you, there are plenty of places that are part of the Kennel Club's Be Dog Friendly campaign and will allow dogs in.
Search for these at www.dogfriendly.co.uk. Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather, or stand in exposed
sunlight for extended lengths of time. Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car. Whether it be in a supermarket car
park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police on emergency number 999 or the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
What to do if your dog overheats: Contact the vet immediately. Move the dog out of the heat.
Offer the dog cool, rather than cold, water for small drinks if the dog is still conscious. If possible, fan the dog with cool air.
Wrap in cool, damp towels or spray with cool, not cold, water. Pay particular attention to the head.
Cool the dog's tongue by dabbing with a cold, damp cloth.
ANNANDALE CANINE SOCIETY TRY TO HELP EXHIBITORS AS BEST THEY CAN TO PROVIDE EXTRA SHELTER.
THERE ARE SEVERAL TAPS DOTTED AROUND THE VENUE THAT ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE.
REMEDIAL ACTION WILL BE TAKEN IF DOGS ARE FOUND IN CARS.

16. DOGS IN VEHICLES ON HOT DAYS. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for
disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.
• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.
• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.
• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.
• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.
• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. • Keep the dog in the shade – take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always
have plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. • Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for
extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.
17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any actions, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. The use of pinch collars, electronic shock collars, or prong collars, it not permitted at any show licensed by the Kennel Club. This shall apply at the venue or within the precincts of the show.
18. Not for competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.
19. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the Board of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.
20. An exercise area will be provided for all exhibits. Exhibitors and handlers are required to clear up any fouling by the dog(s) in their charge immediately.
SECURITY AT SHOWS
In light of recent events the Kennel Club would like to issue a reminder to all Societies of the importance of security at dog shows. The Kennel Club understands that due to the nature of dog shows and the quantity of paraphernalia exhibitors bring it would be extremely difficult for show organizers to take on the issue of security alone, therefore we would reiterate the advice being given by the Police and security services, that everyone in the UK should remain vigilant and this applies to those organizing and taking part in dog shows. The importance of exhibitors feeling that they and their dogs are safe when attending a show cannot be underestimated. We would therefore remind you of the importance of the need for show organizers and exhibitors to remain mindful of potential dangers and that all visitors generally need to be vigilant and alert. Should you see anything suspicious or of concern, please alert the Show Secretary, or any of the Leisure Centre Staff immediately. If it is a package or bag you are concerned about, please do NOT attempt to move it or examine it yourself. Should it be necessary for the hall to be evacuated, please remember that evacuation should be carried out as speedily but as safely as possible, as in the case of a fire. It is important that you do not block the exit routes with cages or bags and follow any instructions given to you by the Show Management regarding evacuation procedures.
