Stu dy d es ign - 60 extracted hum an maxillary central and l ateral incisors were instrumen ted w ith K-files and filled using lateral com paction o f gutta-percha (GP) and A H Plus sealer. The teeth w ere rando m ly d ivid ed into fou r experim ental groups of 15 specim ens each. Removal of gutta-percha was performed with the follow ing devices and techn iques: ProTaper U niversal rotary retreatm ent system, R-Endo retreatment files, Mtw o retreatment files and H edstrom files. Time to reach w orkin g length and to elim inate filling m aterial was also recorded. The specim ens were rendered transparent for evaluation of the area of the rem aining gu tta-percha/sealer under stereom icroscope at 6X m agnification. Photographs w ere taken for further analysis using com puter im age analysis program. The results w ere statistically analyzed using AN O VA and Bon ferroni test. Results - The ProTaper U niv ersal retreatm ent system resulted i n a sm aller percen tage of canal area covered b y residual GP/sealer than in other group s, but a significant difference was found betw een ProTaper and M two group and betw een ProTaper and H edstrom group (P < 0.001). The M ean operating time w as m inim um w ith M two group (5.08± 0.64 min) while it was found to be maximum with hand files (7.93± 1.03 min). Conclusion - It w as con clud ed that all test techniq ues left gutta-percha/sealer remnants w ithin the root canal. The ProTaper Universal rotary retreatment system proved to be an efficient method of removing gutta-percha and sealer from m axillary central and lateral incisors.
