Off Centre Stage to host August workshops A variety of workshops for

children will be offered at Off Centre Stage in August, following several creative arts classes that were held through July.

The program opens with a children's music theatre workshop from August 11 to 14. The session, originally slated to run over the first week of August, replaces a puppetry workshop that has since been cancelled.

Off Centre Stage says the

workshop will give children in two age groups — from four to six years, and age seven and up — the opportunity to explore musical theatre through songs, mask making and drama.

Instructor Lynne Quinn will focus on nursery rhymes and children's verses for the younger participants, while those in the

older age group will sing in and act out a longer fairy tale, the choice of which will depend on the number of children enrolled.

Simple masks will be made to add colour to the performances, and the emphasis will be on the creative process within the children themselves.

Workshop times are from 9:30 to 10:30 am for younger participants, and from 10:30 am to 12:30

pm for the older class. Fees are x\2 and $24, respectively.

August will also see a recorder workshop for children aged seven years and over. It will take place from August 18 to 21, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, and recorders will be supplied as necessary. Cost of the workshop is $12.

During that same week, a workshop for elementary school band students will be held from

10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Interested students will have the opportunity to improve their techniques and reading skills, and to enjoy playing together without normal time restrictions. Cost is $12.

To register for any of these workshops, call Lynne Quinn at 537-2116. Registrations for the band workshop should be made by August 10.

'Life on the Wicked Stage'

Not big-time but certainly a good time By FRANK RICHARDS

There were the two of them and the grand piano, and for two hours they kept the audience happy, two evenings running. It wasn't big time, but it was a good time. It was Life upon the Wicked Stage and April Curtis walked that wicked stage while Bryan Smith pounded the piano. Together, they played on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The program was music hall, vaudeville, variety, revue or whatever term puts you in mind of the old-time style. While Smith played and came up off his piano stool, April presented a piece and dashed away to change costume and role. In the traditional style they might have offered a series of running sketches while introducing other entertainers. On a smaller stage in a smaller setting to a smaller audience, they were content to fill all those roles.

The opener was Vancouver Suite, composed by Bryan Smith, wandering through the Spanish Banks, Robson Strasse, watching the children in the Park and to the North Shore by way of Pender St.

As he told me afterwards, he was there, on stage, almost the entire two hours. That would merely indicate the advantages of changing costume, unless you happen to be faced with the chore yourself.

It was a credit to the two players that an audience could sit for two hours and go home to a soft chair happy that they had seen the show.

Curtis has a delightful voice and a wide r e p e r t o i r e . M o r e significantly, she has a stage

presence that convinces you tnat she is a gamine, operatic singer and Shakespearean actress all in one.

She sang the theme song. Life on the Wicked Stage, from Jerome Kern's Showboat and then

'A credit to the two players.'

wandered through a well-chosen selection of hit songs of the past.

The first act was built around the reminiscences of a singing actress and the prompting of the pianist. When Curtis recalled her days in Shakespeare, she played an

excerpt trom the preliminaries of the death of Cleopatra.

Smith has sat at the piano in soldiers' canteens and on stages across the world, but he rarely left his seat. In the Festival of the Arts show he was out in front with a series of typical music hall skits, with all the bluster and the corn that made the music hall in years past.

Smith is well known on Salt Spring Island, as an entertainer, from his long runs at Harbour House. Curtis is probably less well-known because she has not appeared before audiences on so long a term. She deserves to be better known, because her talent is evident and very entertaining.

I enjoyed them both.

Biz and Mort Stratton

urprise party celebrates couple's golden anniversary

About 30 friends and neighbours attended a surprise party held last week for Salt Spring residents Mort and Biz Stratton, who will soon mark their 50th wedding anniversary.

The Strattons will celebrate their golden anniversary on September 2 with their family in Eastern Canada.

The party held last week on Salt Spring saw a toast to the couple proposed by Gordon Cunningham. Other highlights induced a cake baked for the occasion by Elizabeth Emmerson, and a view of Mount Baker painted by Carol Evans.

Before retiring to Salt Spring Island 10 years ago. Dr. Stratton was a member of the faculty of Denison University in Ohio, while

his wife devoted much time to the university library. Both are active in the island community.

The Centennial Park Comittee of the

Salt Spring Island Parks & Recreation Commission

PURPOSE: to discuss a number of problems and complaints associated with congestion at the Park

on Friday evening and Saturdays.

Committee to explore twinning An ad-hoc committee has been

formed to investigate twinning Ganges, B.C., with its namesake in southern France.

At a July 24 meeting that drew about 15 people, a committee of three people was struck to make initial contact with officials in the French town and lay the groundwork for possible ties between the two towns.

Committee members are John Scott, Irene Wright and Merle Box. Scott initiated the meeting after visiting Ganges, France, earlier this year and noting the similarities between the two centres.

Like its Canadian counterpart, Ganges. France, is a relatively small village that relies heavily on tourism and counts a weekend farmers' market as a principal attraction.

At this point, Irene Wright said, the ad-hoc committee will concentrate on contacting officials in the French village and "make overtures" about twinning. The project, she continued, could take the form of a correspondence exchange — with translations done by local French immersion students — or reach the level of personal visits.

The committee expects to have a better idea of possible twinning activities by early fall.

Galiano Island

Conference hears opinions of history

By CATHERINE LANG Eighteenth-century explora

tions on B.C.'s west coast were highlighted at the recent historical and cultural conference held on Galiano Island.

The conference, organized by the Galiano Historical and Cultural Society in conjunction with the Canadian Nautical Research Society and The Underwater Archaeology Society of B.C., drew professional and amateur historians from Spain. England, Norway, the U.S. and points across Canada.

'The Europeans were not always the prime actors in what was going on.'

Presentations on Friday, July 25, focused on the dispute between England and Spain over sovereignty of B.C.'s west coast in the 1700s. Local historian John Kenderick and Freeman Tovell , from Victoria, gave detailed accounts of events that transpired between Spanish explorer Bodega y Quadra and Captain George Vancouver during their search for the North West Passage.

Spain's motivation for the search is not clear, Kendrick said. He speculated that they were looking for a better trade route from Manila to Spain, but Russian activity along the coast was also perceived as a threat.

At that time, Kendrick added, the discoveries made by explorers were not always what had been expected. Cook's voyages in the

South Pacific, he said by way of example, were prompted by a search for the great southern continent.

A talk delivered by William Glover from Royal Roads Military College centred on navigational aids and techniques used by explorers, and discussed some of the theories and problems experienced because of lack of know

ledge and poor equipment. He said the expansion of com

merce, and the introduction of steamboats in the 19th century, forced hydrographers to make increasingly-accurate maps ot B.C.'s coastline. More precise compass measurements came into wider use during that time.

Dr. Christon Archer of the University of Calgary noted the significance of contact with natives during the era. "The Europeans," he said, "were not always the prime actors in what was going on. One has to look at the native side of exploration as well." well."

Archer noted that Spain may have perceived a threat from Russia because of that nation's association with B.C.'s Native Indians. "The king (of Spain) was astounded at the remarkable level of civilization of the North West coast," he said.

Afternoon presentat ions included the delivery of a paper by Barry Gough, professor at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, on The Hunt for the Lemalchi Pirates in 1863. The presentation was excerpted from the recent publication of his book. Gunboat Frontier.

Gough explained that his research led to a study of relations between whites and Indians, and among Indian tribes, during an episode in the 1860s when the Lemalchi Indians were sought

Kim Davis takes chainsaw to raw block of wood

Hands hold deep fascination for Pender Island sculptor

By CATHERINE LANG After working as a chef, a

heavy equipment operator, an industrial first aid attendant, and a faller specializing in dangerous trees. North Pender resident Kim Davis has taken to sculpting functional pieces of art from huge blocks of wood.

"Wood enhances the quality of life," said Davis, explaining that his interest lies in bringing life into sculpture.

Although the first turning point

in his multi-faceted career came 10 years ago when art instructors at Red Deer College recognized his talent, Davis only began to sculpt seriously about 18 months ago.

He now divides his time between his job as a faller and his studio on North Pender. His first studio was in Victoria, but all of his major works were completed here — including a cedar chair which is a study of his own hands magnified to five times their

original size. The detail imitating the struc

ture and lines in Davis' own hands is as impressive as the construction. "Study for a Chair Number Five" merges the backs of two hands to make a chair. When a group of plastic surgeons showed a great deal of interest in the piece, Davis was pleased. Their specialty was hand surgery and they were fascinated by the design.

police report

'The rest is hard work'

PENDER ISLAND — RCMP Cpl. Ray Thorogood said a letter from Crown Counsel in Sidney has informed him that a suspect in the killing of Wilhelmina the Goose will not be prosecuted due to an administrative error.

The Canada Goose was killed last November on Mayne Island. The file Thorogood sent to Sidney Courts was misplaced, and the six-month limitation on pressing charges for the offence has since lapsed.

"Crown Counsel expresses his deepest regrets to all the good citizens who were directly involved or who have expressed concern for this act," read the letter to Thorogood.

Thorogood said the prosecutor believed the charge had been laid when Pender RCMP called in the spring to follow up on proceedings. Sidney Courts discovered the file had been misplaced. Consequently, no charges were laid.

"I t 's very, very seldom something like this happens," said Thorogood, noting that although police only had a 50-50 chance of proving guilt, the Crown wanted to proceed with the trial.

Thorogood said that prosecution often doesn't take place when evidence is weak because the Crown Counsel deems it to be a waste of taxpayers' money.

"But this one he felt very strongly about and definitely wanted to prosecute," said Thorogood.

• A motor vehicle accident on

Mayne Island July 26 saw a Surrey man lose control of his car, sending it into a ditch on Campbell Bay Road. Thorogood said the driver lost control when he drove off an asphalt road onto a gravel road that had been oiled.

Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured, but S800 damage was done to the vehicle.

RCMP remind drivers that highways crews are coating gravel roads with oil. Thorogood emphasized the need for motorists to be cautious and to drive slowly under such conditions.

Three percent of art is romantic

Kim Davis

From Page 24

His intention in most works in progress is to create pieces that are both functional and artistic.

"Our lives are too busy being efficient. We don't incorporate, art into the things we use anymore," he said.

Davis is now working on a show of hands which he expects will take up to five years to complete. He has the rough beginnings of two of the pieces for the series — one is called Religion for its depiction of how money is worshipped in our society, and the other will be a design of a hand holding a functional clock.

Large pieces of various kinds of wood weighing anywhere from 400 and 800 pounds are the raw material he now works with. His

"Study for a Chair Number Five," for example, began as a 400-pound piece of cedar and weighed 40 pounds on completion.

Steps in the process include designing and constructing a

. maquette, or model, out of wiring and fine German clay. Producing the design for the chair was particularly tricky, said Davis, because he had to alter the structure several times before the hand would support a sitting chair position.

After carving out the rough design with power tools, Davis sculpts the finer lines with hand tools and sands everything to a smooth finish before applying several coats of oil.

" I love trees, but most people don't have a concept of living with

them. You can take the rot out. you can make them healthy, you can do surgery, and you can give people a view without taking them down," he said.

But Davis has mixed feelings about working as a faller — it is exhausting, dangerous, and it forces him to do his artwork on a part-time basis.

"If I could, I'd quit my business and carve," he said. "I 'm getting really tired of risking my life."

There is no shortage of motiva tion in Davis' overall plans. Bui he is scornful of those who think an artist's life is idyllic.

"The whole romantic aspect is about three per cent — and the rest is hard work," he said.

after by the Royal Navy. Following the murder of two

civilians on Saturna in 1863, a Navy gunboat was dispatched to find the guilty Indians and issue a just punishment.

Several unsuccessful attempts followed their efforts to capture the Lemalchi. The chief of the tribe, Acheewun, proved to be particularly elusive, and another gunboat was brought into the search.

"The Navy watched all of Acheewun's possible haunts including Chemainus, Kuper, and Galiano Islands. Indian evidence pointed to Galiano, but that island had many natural obstacles, including thick woods, high mountain caves, and steep rocky shores that made approaches from the sea difficult," said Gough.

The natives were eventually forced down from their mountain hideout above Montague Harbour, and the trial that ensued in Victoria led to the execution of four Lemalchi, including the ;hief.

Gough concluded that assistance from neighboring Indians in the Penelukut and Chemainus tribes, and the advantage of steam-powered boats, helped the Navy capture the Lemalchi.

Following Gough's presentation, Janet Fireman from the Los Angeles County Museum gave a witty speech on an obscure 1790 play which fostered "overzealous British patriotism."

The afternoon wrapped up at the pub with a valiant rendition of a portion of the play, Britain Prepar'd— On the High Seas and in the London Theatre. Members of the Galiano Strolling Players performed some of the play's highlights, thereby underscoring Fireman's comical criticisms of the theatrical flop.

New museum to include connection with Galiano

golf notes

The form and focus of Canada ' s new national museum was explained to a Galiano Island audience during the recent historical and cultural conference held there .

Dr. George MacDonald, director of the new museum, a t tended the conference on July 25 to present a series of slides outlining plans for the Canadian Museum

'Hall will feature reconstruction of an entire West Coast Indian vill-age.

of Civilization, formerly the Museum of Man.

The new museum, being built at a cost of S250 million and scheduled to open in 1988, will include in its Grand Hall a replica of the Spanish schooner Sutil, which the explorer Galiano sailed through B.C. waters in 1792.

The national museum has commissioned the local Galiano Historical Society to build the replica and that connection was enough to draw about 80 people to the is land 's activity centre to see and hear MacDonald ' s presentat ion.

The museum director said the Great Hall will feature "na t ive people and their accomplishm e n t s , " and represent the "po in t of con tac t" between old world and new.

He added that the display will also form the platform for theatrical performances.

But while the Sutil will be featured in the Grand Hall, the replica of Gal iano 's 18th century schooner is only one item in a vast collection of art displays and technical presentat ions . MacDonald noted that the museum will en ter a " n e w era of h igh- tech" by offering at tractions ranging from an Imax and Omnimax theat re to laser disc records that will print 3-D colour photographs of museum exhibits.

The new museum, which will face Ot tawa ' s Parl iament Build ings from Pare Laurier on th< Quebec side of the Ottawa River will eventually be one of a series of archival buildings and galleries that will form a ring around Parl iament to create Boulevard Canada.

MacDonald added that the building, which uses images of glacial landscapes as a theme , was designed entirely on a computer . That technology allowed des igners the freedom to calculate sophisticated curves and forms, he said.

The building contains three floors, which MacDonald said fit together like a map. The first floor will cover the prehistoric period, the second will out l ine the influence immigrants have had on C a n a d a , and the third will document regional cultures and the growth of national institutions.

Also included in the building will be television studios and facilities for the production of educational programs. Theatrical presentat ions held in the Grand Hall will also concentrate on education.

An adjoining wing — covering 20,000 square feet — will constitute a children's museum, which

MacDonald said will focus on hands-on exhibits and models that children can use as a set t ing for videotaping. The videotapes can then be purchased as a souvenir.

Native and Inuit art collections will be emphasized in both the Grand Hall and separa te galleries. MacDonald noted that the hall will feature a reconstruction of an ent i re Wes t Coast Indian village which will be the largest , walk-through display of its kind in the world.

Slides shown at the Galiano Island presentat ion showed Coast Salish, Kwakiutl, Bella Coola, Haida and Ts imshian house fronts, and MacDonald said examples of distinctive canoes will be exhibited with each house . A 56-foot war canoe now on display at the Canada Pavilion at Expo 86 will float alongside the Sutil in the Grand Hall.

Contemporary native works are also slated for display, including a bronze mask, Raven Brings Light To Man, by Robert Davidson, and Bill Reid 's original killer whale now in front of the Vancouver Aquar ium.

On the second floor, ethnic displays will open with a Chinese-Canadian exhibit, and MacDonald said live performances will accompany many of the changing e x h i b i t s . M o d e l s p o r t r a y i n g aspects of regional history will also be found on this f loor— i.e. , a dock in Halifax, the kitchen of a prairie house circa the Great Depression, and the house of a

'Museum meant for all young Canadians in their search for identity.'

Chinese immigrant . Audio discs will provide background information.

" T h e y will tell you what you are looking at in any one of 20 l a n g u a g e s , " MacDonald said.

Canadian content will b e featured in space-age films in the Imax and Omnimax thea t re , and M a c D o n a l d sa id h e h o p e s "o r i en t a t i on" films simulating Canadian landscapes and historical scenes can be added to the collection.

MacDonald concluded that the new museum is designed to bolster confidence in Canadians , adding that he hopes it can help to effect changes in a t t i tudes . The museum, he said, is meant "for all young Canadians in their search for ident i ty ."

Two presentat ions were made to MacDonald following his slide show and talk. Andrew Loveridge handed over a copy of Galiano's biography, which he t ranslated from Spanish for the occasion, and MacDonald welcomed the contribution. " I t is exactly that kind of input we welcome very much, i ndeed , " he said.

The second gift was an edition of From Sea to Sea: Art and Discovery Maps of Canada, presented by its author , Joe C. W. Armstrong.

Two videos were shown after the presentat ions — Dream in the Making, and a history and background on the Gulf Islands produced by the islands Trust .

Island riders register show triumphs Three riders of Galiano's Maple

Styrup Riding Club confirmed their reputation as contestants to be feared by winning first place in three events in the recent Lower Vancouver Island Horse Show at Beaver Lake, Victoria.

Annie Scoones, Kate Hennessy and Yarrah Hooley all earned top positions, and placed second in most other classes. They rode horses Napolean and Japonica, with which they trained all winter. Owner and teacher Annie Scoones said "all the hard work paid off. Galiano is being put on the map in horse riding."

Approximately 100 people competed at the show. This was one of many big annual shows in South-western British Columbia. Galiano will have representation at the upcoming equestrian events in Sooke. Saanich (the largest show of the year) and Salt Spring Island.

Congratulations, and keep them shaking in their jodhpurs.

Lard tundern by! A record crowd attended the

Rod and Gun Club's third annual Thunder Mug Races on Sunday, August 3. Thundermuggers included many Galiano residents and vis i tors inc lud ing an exceptional number of RCMP friends of Rick Coulter and their families from the mainland and Vancouver Island.

Thunder King Olie Garner blasted the thunderstick and all eight race participants headed around the Montague Harbour course seated on their "mugs". Rules specify that the boats carrying the mug and rider be powered by no more than a 10 horsepower engine.

Daron Clark won the race, $50 cash from the Rod and Gun Club and a polo shirt. Scott Harold of Porlier Pass Road placed second,

winning a gas can from Galiano Garage and a polo shirt. Sidney RCMP Kim McDonald placed third, winning a polo shirt.

Overall winner of attention, especially be intrigued children, was Miss Piggy, who skiffed happily around the harbour and attended the festivities. She also enjoyed starring on the Thunder Mug float in the previous days Fiesta Parade.

The Rod and Gun Club held true to its reputation for fantastic barbecues, serving up a storm. Shirley Coulter of Montague Marina said it was "a fantastic day for everyone."

Gossip mongers Waters north of Gossip Island

were dotted with boats from 6 am to 2 pm Sunday, August 3, during the 19th annual Gossip Island Fishing Derby. The event began in 1967 as a Centennial project, and was started by residents Margery and John Taylor, who are now part of the organizing committee.

Dr. Radford's field was the usual hub of activity, where about 100 people registered and set out to the Georgia Straight stretch between boundaries—the U47 bell buoy and Salamanca Point. Weigh-in back at the field was officiated by John McDonald, who provided the following results:

Banquet speaker criticizes 'flag-waving' historians

By CATHERINE LANG Close to 80 people attended a

July 26 banquet at the Galiano Activity Centre to hear a presentation by historian Selma Huxley-Barkham. The evening was one highlight of the week-long historical conference organized by Edrie Holloway, president of The Galiano Historical and Cultural Society-

Huxley-Barkham, well-known among historians for research that led to the discovery of 16th century Basque whaling schooners off Newfoundland's coast, complimented those who contributed to the "wonderful, unchauv-inistic presentations of history" made at the conference.

She said the history of non-English-speaking peoples is more recognized on the west coast than the east, and added that the conference brought to light many positive aspects of that history.

Criticizing historian Harold In-nis for his perspectives on early east coast history, Huxley-Barkham attacked what she called an example of "flag-waving" — the theory that British fishermen invented the process of drying cod off the east coast before returning to England.

Noting that the British were not on the east coast until the last quarter of the 16th century, she said they were trying to make up-for lost time by inventing a theory which pushed Spanish and Portuguese fishermen out of the spotlight.

She feels that flag-waving "is

probably endemic in all nations" and is therefore unlikely to be eradicated. However, her primary concern is with more subtle examples, such as the English "invention" of cod fisheries.

"What I'm concerned about is historical whitewashing — pretending you aren't flagwaving when you are." she said.

Huxley-Barkham, who travelled from the village of Onate Guipuzcoa • near the Spanish-French border in the Pyrenees to attend the conference, indulged with other guests in the gourmet meal which accompanied the Galiano Island banquet. Chorizo and duck in a Spanish sauce was the main entree, and evening accompaniment was provided by flutist Mary Reher and classical guitarist Brad Prevedoras.

Among those seated at the head table with Huxley-Barkham were Admiral Collier, president of the B.C. Ferry Corporation, and Gerald Panting, the president of Canada's Nautical Research Society. Captain Richard Donaldson chaired the presentations and offered toasts following the meal.

Collier gave Huxley-Barkham a copy of The Ships of B.C. — The Story of Ferries on the West Coast, and greetings from the tourism ministry were presented by representative Frank Hussey.

Hussey said the ministry would be happy to offer the Galiano Historical Society whatever help was possible, and complimented organizers of the conference on a job well done.

Nature note So where have all the salmon

gone? One bald eagle tried feasting on one of Jim Scoones'two-pound

plastic duck decoys. It swooped down to the pond at Porlier Pass and Clanton Road, and lifted the duck—as well as its four-pound anchor—into a tree, where duck and gear now sit. No sign of the eagle.

Long weekend brings visitor crunch The skies were bright but the

holiday weekend showered Salt Spring Island with visitors who flooded beaches, bars and streets — and who caused traffic jams in Saturday's farmer's market.

According to tourist information statistics, there were more people through the office this •B.C. Day weekend than last. On an average summer day, the information booth may receive 150 enquiries. The long weekend

saw a definite increase, with 177 enquiries answered on Friday, 268 on Saturday, 347 on Sunday, and 222 on Monday.

"It was incredible," said Leah Kitchen, who noted that information booth workers were kept busy all weekend.

B.C. Ferries, meanwhile, said that both the 9:25 am and 12:20 pm sailings from Tsawwassen to Salt Spring were full on Friday,

Ferry traffic increases Contrary to local reports of a

dismal turnout of tourists in June, the B.C. Ferry Corporation reports increased traffic on all Gulf Island ferry routes.

According to Betty Nicholson at the corporation's Victoria office, ferries travelling between Swartz Bay and the Gulf Islands carried 29,127 passengers in June — an increase of 14.1 per cent over June. 1985.

Vehicle traffic on the same

routes increased by 21.4 per cent, with the ferries carrying 13.368 vehicles in all.

Trips between Tsawwassen and the Gulf Islands also increased, with 58,848 passengers (up 12.2 per cent) and 16.825 vehicles (up 18.8 percent) being carried in the month of June.

Nicholson says the increase in Tsawwassen-to-Gulf Islands traffic could be Expo-related.

down through the years

with Driftwood Twenty-five years ago • Word has been received at Wilson Marina in Fulford, from the Canadian Power Squadron in Belville, Ontario, that Edward Ashley and Thomas Milner of Ganges, and Quentin Wilson of Fulford, successfully passed the piloting examinations given recently by Rear Commander Victor Griffin. Success in the test qualifies the examinees for membership in the Canadian Power Squadron. • Classified: two bedroom waterfront home, good soil, three acres, fruit trees, ample water, lovely sheltered view on east side of the island, one-third concrete basement, furnace, 220 wiring. Priced to sell at $8,000.

Twenty Years Ago • The S.S.Beaver, a replica of a Hudson Bay Company paddle-wheeler of the same name, visited Fulford Harbour and Ganges last week. The event at Fulford included an address by Governor Sir James Douglas, aptly portrayed by Andrew Stevens.

The ship was opened to the public at each port and attracted over 1,800 people. The visit by the replica was part of the centennial celebrations on Salt Spring Island. • When members of the local Lions Club were restoring the Beaver Point School, they discovered a confederation plaque, given to the school to celebrate Canada's 50th birthday in 1927. The school is the oldest on Salt Spring, and some claim it to be the second oldest in this province.

Fifteen Years Ago • Plans to celebrate the centennial of British Columbia are in the making. A group of Salt Spring Islanders are preparing to bare all

for the occasion. They intend to mark the 100 years with a skinny-dipping session at St. Mary Lake, but will not release the time of their endeavor. • David Conover, author of One Man's Island, is scheduled to autograph his book about Wallace Island at the Driftwood Bookstore. • Tenders for construction of an addition to the hospital at Ganges were opened, and the Victoria firm of Farmer Construction Ltd. came in with a low bid of $292,066. The 15-bed addition includes facilities for treatment and physiotherapy, a lounge and dining area, offices and an elevator. Health Minister Ralph Loff-mark earlier approved the calling of tenders. • George Tully reeled in top prize at the Galiano Rod and Gun Club fishing derby with a catch that tipped the scales at seven pounds.

Ten Years Ago • A petition aimed at soliciting support for public bus transportation to and from each of the three ferry terminals on Salt Spring Island is circulating the island. With the endorsement of four island groups — the Community Society. SPEC, the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club

• Despite a strike by the Office and Technical Employees Union, B.C. Hydro has sent out bills to customers. The amount, however, is an estimate, and not the full total. The company said the estimates would be brought into line following the next reading of customers' meters.

• HMCS Porte Quebec berthed in Ganges Harbour for a visit. The ship, a unit of the training squadron in Esquimalt, was on a routine training cruise, bound for Vancouver.

Five Years Ago • Pacific Mobile Homes of Victoria is creating a 100-unit addition to the mobile home park on Brinkworthy Road to help relieve the housing shortage on the island. • An $339,000 expansion project at the Vesuvius Bay ferry terminal will get underway in mid-August. • Voting is expected to be finished by the weekend on a new contract between the B.C. Ferry Corporation and the B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers Union. The two sides reached a settlement last Thursday, ending the threat of a strike by the ferry workers for the holiday weekend. The union had served 24-hour strike notice earlier in the week.
