RARE DOCUMENT FROM 1147 MENTIONING CRUSADERS57. (Crusades) Manuscript Document recording the benefactions to a French abbey by four sons of a noblewoman, as they were about to leave on the Second Crusade. 23 lines, in brown ink, with one large initial; docketing on verso from a later date. 18x23 cm. (7x9”).

France: c.1147

Significant document written in Latin in a clear Romanesque hand, recording gifts made to the Church of St. Mary at Rozoy-le-Jeune, near Courtenay in the Diocese of Sens, including those of three, or perhaps four, brothers about to set out for Jerusalem on the Second Crusade. As related in the document, Letuisa, a noble matron from Milly, inspired by divine command, gave up her wealth and sought a way in which she might better serve God. She sought out in poverty the communities of religious women and chose the Church of St. Mary at Rozoy, where she was received into the community of holy virgins who served God there. Seriously ill with fever she called together her sons and daughters, asking them to make donations to the church, to which they generously agreed. The gifts of three (or four?) of her sons, portions of the harvest from their lands, are spelled out, and were praised by the four daughters and three further sons (all parties are named); there appeared as witnesses several officials of the church, the crusader Arnulfus (Arnulfus ierosolomitanus) and the hunchback knight Stephanus (miles gibosus). The charter closes, “This gift was made in the same year in which the four above-named brothers set out for Jerusalem for the sake of the Lord.” All factors point to this being at the time of the ill-fated and bloody Second Crusade, 1147. It is possible that the document lacks a seal, but it is believed that it may never have had one, as it is styled in a note by the scribe at the end “Hec Ö carta Letuydis Milliacensis” (This is a document of Letuisa of Milly), who may not have had a seal. The widespread washing and scouring of manuscripts during the Dark and Middle Ages to reuse the precious vellum, the cutting and use of pieces in bookbinding, and destruction in centuries of warfare, makes a document in such choice condition as this is the exception. Western European manuscripts before 1200 are scarce, and especially when so closely datable. The great majority of medieval manuscripts which remain accessible to the collector are leaves from books, often defective, or documents dealing with routine matters. By virtue of its content, the present document is quite rare and desirable. From the reign of King Louis VII (1120-1180), “Louis the Young,” who conquered Charlemagne, himself joined the Second Crusade, and later surrendered vast tracts of his land to Henry II of England. Transcription and translation available on request. With the catalogue description of The Rendells present. Fine with some normal aging and soiling.

London: J. Hooke, 1730

Second edition in English of Discorsi e dimonstrazioni matematichè intorno à due nuove scienze, but realistically the earliest obtainable. Widely recognized as “the first modern textbook of physics and the foundation of the [modern] sci-ence of mechanics,” Galileo’s Discorsi is a mathematical dialogue on kinemat-ics and a variety of physical problems (including: matter, sound, and light); it also contains philosophical components dealing with the nature of mathematics and the role of experiment and reason in science. The Discorsi replaced the Aristotelean notion of motion with a new one based in inertia and principles derived from falling bodies, projectiles, and the pendulum. “It was upon his [Galileo’s] foundation that Huygens, Newton and others were able to erect the frame of the science of dynam-ics, and to extend its range (with the concept of universal gravitation) to the heavenly bodies” - PMM 130. The first translation into English of the work appeared in Vol. II, Part 1 of Thomas Salusbury’s Mathematical Collections and Translations in Two Parts. However, nearly all copies of that volume, published in 1665, were consumed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, with only about ten copies of Vol. II, Part

London: J. Nourse and P. Vaillant, 1744

The first treatise, ‘Concerning Art, A Dialogue,’ avoids the commonplace mimetic theories and introduces into English critical discussion the important aesthetic distinction between energy (energeia) and work (kinesis) derived from Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics. ‘A Discourse on Music, Painting, and Poetry’ is notable for the supreme position allotted to poetry and for its praise of the musical-verbal symbiosis achieved in the Handelian oratorio. ‘Concerning Happiness, A Dialogue’ urges the primacy of imagination as a mode of intellection. Spine and edges rubbed; pages browned; bookplate on front pastedown and embossed stamp on title page; else very good.

Birmingham, [England]: John Baskerville, 1774

“Hunter’s Gravid uterus, on which he labored for thirty years, is one of the great artistic achievements in medicine. ‘It is indeed a remarkable book, not the least important aspect of which is the large size of the plates, which Hunter took care to defend in the preface. For him, the technical quality of the plates as of great importance; they combine descriptive clarity with beauty. The work contains thirty-four plates of different kinds; some depict several objects, others a life-size section of the human body- the female trunk between the abdomen and the middle of the thighs-”-Norman Library 6157. The Gravid uterus was the largest book produced by John Baskerville, the greatest English printer of the 18th century. “One of the great publications of world medical literature as well as a classic of book production.”-Heirs of Hippocrates 942. Choulant-Frank, pp. 296-297; Osler 3026; Garrison-Morton 6157. Mostly marginal dampstaining to every leaf and plate, largely contained to bottom corner, but in many cases at other edges, usually not encroaching upon the engraved illustration; else a very good copy of this very scarce work.

137. (Hypnotism) Bernheim, [hippolyte]. De la Suggestion et de ses Applications a la Thérapeutique. [4], iii, 428 pp. (8vo), half morocco and boards, gilt-lettered spine. First Edition.

Paris: Octave Doin, 1886

“The first part of this work is a republication of Bernheim’s De la sugestion dans l’etat hypnotique et dans l’ etat de veille, 1884, in which Bernheim views the nature of hypnotism in sharp contrast to that of Charcot, which was dominant at the time. Charcot believed hypnotism to be a pathological condition based on physiological processes, an artificial neurosis found only in hysterics. Bernheim, on the other hand sees hypnotism as a purely psychological condition, one essentially related to suggestion. His definition of hypnotism is: the induction of a peculiar psychial condition which increases the susceptibility to suggestion. This basic difference of opinion constitutes the core of the dispute that would continue for many years between the followers of Charcot (the Salpetriere School of Hypnotism) and the followerw of Bernheim (the Nancy School of Hypnotism). In the second part of the book, Bernheim discusses suggestion as a therapuetic agent. Beginning with a look at the traditional role of the imagination in healing throughout the ages, Bernheim places modern suggestive therapeutics in that historical stream. The introduction is followed by a long section on cases of specific illnesses Bernheim treated through hypnotic suggestion. This work became the basic test used by the adherents of the Nancy School and holds a unique place in the history of hypnotism.”---Crabtree 1127. --Crabtree 1127. Norman Library 211. An interesting footnote about Jenner: Garrison, (p. 629), reports that he was a “short, stout, solid, able-bodied man, yet so averse to exercise that he said he would not even walk from his front door to his brougham if he could get someone to carry him.” (He achieved 83 years of age.) --Garrison-Morton 5027. RARE FIRST EDITION OF NEWTON’S EARLY WORKS ON CALCULUS, 1711176. [neWton, isAAc]. Analysis per Quantitatum Series, Fluxiones, ac Differentias: Cum Enumeratione Lineaerum Tertii Ordinis. (approximately 9¼x7¼”), modern calf-backed boards, red leather spine label lettered in gilt. First Edition.

London: Ex Officina Pearsoniana, 1711

Rare first edition of Newton’s early works on calculus, published to demonstrate his claim to priority in the invention of the calculus. This is the rarest of New-ton’s major mathematical works, apparently printed in a small edition intended only for private distribution. Newton is today acknowledged as first to develop calculus, but during the 18th century controversy raged between the claims of Newton and Liebniz - the latter was the first to publish on the subject, though evidence suggests Newton came upon the idea first, and there were suggestions of plagiarism directed at both parties. The present volume includes Newton’s first written statement on Calculus (from around 1669), his works on the quadrature of curves and the method of inter-polation, together with pertinent excerpts from letters to Oldenburg and Wallis. Also included is the first account of the binomial theorem. Wallis 293; Babson 207; Grolier/Horblit 66b Minor scuffing to leather; light foxing; near fine.

London: R. Faulder, 1794

“Paley’s Evidences was the first divinity treatise for all students. It is the epitome of eighteenth-century theological reasoning; rational, empirical, it seeks to demonstrate the truth of the Christian religion by reference to physical phenomena...He rests his case on ‘the necessity, in each particular case, of an intelligent designing mind for the contriving and determining of the forms which organized bodies bear.’” (Printing and the Mind of Man). While well represented in institutional holdings (ESTC locates 18 copies) the first edition is quite rare in the trade. RATHBORNE’S HISTORY OF SURVEYING, 1616184. rAthBorne, AAron. The Surveyor in Foure Bookes. [10], 157, 152-175, 172-181, 186-228, [2] pp. A6 (-A1), B-N6, O6(±O3), P-V6, X4. London: Printed by W. Stansby for W. Burre, 1616

The first, and only, edition of this classic of surveying, written in a highly technical style for the period, and remaining in use for over a quarter of a century. Considered a major work in the history of surveying, it was a prototype for publications that would follow 200 years hence. The first book covers geometry and theorems, the second deals with applied geometry, the third looks at surveying and related drafting instruments (with discussion of Rathborne’s ‘circumferentor’), and the fourth book discusses what a Manor is, along with its administration. The author was both a lawyer and surveyor. The decorative title page engraved by William Hole shows the title flanked by figures of Arithmetica and Geometria, a surveyor at work, and the two globes (celestial and terrestrial). Leaf O3 is a cancel with verso line 5 having “58 4/5”. Lacking A1, a blank. Owner’s signature dated 1715 (J. Whittaker) in upper right margin of dedication page. One leather tie torn off but present; occasional minor soiling and very light dampstains to contents, several leaves with top corners neatly reinforced, still a nice copy of a scarce and important book.

The description of angina appears in Lettre de M. Rougnon à M. (A.C. de) Lorry, published in 1768, and is known to survive in only two copies, while the Considerationes, offered here, is noted in only six locations in OCLC WorldCat. Blake, p. 389. Wellcome IV, p. 564. See Garrison-Morton 2886. Rubbed extremities, a touch chipped at spine ends, front joint starting; hinges cracked; light scattered foxing; very good.

BIBLE PRESENTED BY LAST EMPRESS OF RUSSIA191. (Russian) Bible in Russian, signed by Tsarina Alexandra Feyodorvna, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. 322 pp. Text in 2 columns, in Russian. 13x9 cm. (5¼x3½”), cloth stamped in gilt.

Petrograd [St. Petersburg], Russia: 1914

Bible signed and inscribed by the last Empress of Russian, almost certainly presented to a wounded sol-dier during the First World War, a common practice, though few of the gifts survived the rigors of the Eastern Front. The Tsarina Alexandra Feyodorvna (1872-1918), married Tsar Nicholas II in 1894 and bore him four daughters and a son, the hemophiliac Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. The front free endpa-per is signed by Alexandra in brown ink, along with the notation in Russian translated as “God bless and protect” and the notation “C.S 1915” (undoubtedly Czarskoe Selo - Czar’s Village - the country estate of the imperial family near St. Petersburg). There is also a rubberstamp indicating the book was presented by the Empress Alexandra. Provenance: Baroness von Billinghausen, who passed away in San Francisco in 1998. Some rubbing and extremity wear to covers, rear cover stained; very good.

TWO RARE RUSSIAN WORKS ON PHYSICS192. (Russian) lenz, heinrich Friedrich emil. [Guide to Physics, in Russian]. iv, [8], 606 pp. Text in Russian. With 11 engraved plates. (8vo) 19.8x12 cm. (8x4¾”), period calf-backed marbled boards. First Edition.

[St. Petersburg]: 1839

Rare work on physics by the Russian-German-Estonian physicist Heinrich Friedrich Emil Lenz (1804-1865), most noted for formulating Lenz’s law in electrodynamics in 1833. Besides the law named in his honor, Lenz also independently discovered Joule’s law in 1842; to honor his efforts on the problem, it is also given the name the “Joule–Lenz law,” named also for James Prescott Joule. Lenz was member of Russian Academy of Science, head of St.Petersburg University. Some rubbing to covers, spine head chipped; some internal darkening, lower ¾” of title-page clipped off, overall very good.

Moscow, Russia: 1791

Rare Russian edition of Musschenbroek’s Elementa Physica, first published in Latin in 1726, which played an important part in the transmission of Isaac Newton’s ideas in physics to Europe. There is no separate title-page, apparently as issued. Pieter van Musschenbroek was born on 14 March 1692 in Leiden, Holland, the son of a maker of scientific instruments. He is remembered today for his work in electrostatics, and the invention of the Leyden jar, named for his city of origin. Rubbing to covers; old Russian rubberstamps on title-page, a few leaves with short marginal tears, else very good.

Cambridge: University Press, 1904 & 1905

First and second editions of one of the greatest discoveries of modern science. The second edition expanded with approximately 180 pages of additional material. Rutherford was a physicist at Cambridge when he developed his revolutionary theory that radioactivity is a by-product of the transmutation of one form of matter into another. He also detected and named alpha and beta rays emitted from radioactive salts and predicted that disintigration of some radioactive elements would generate helium. In 1908 Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Horblit, 91; Dibner, Heralds of Science, 51. Both volume with some light wear; short split to spine edge on First Edition; very good.

Cum Indice copioso. [16], 473, [19], 4 pp. Title page and last leaf with woodcut device, plus a few woodcut decorations. (Small 8vo), calf with gilt spine, gilt-lettered morocco spine label. Second Edition.

Frankfurt: Andreae Wecheli, 1586

Extensively covers pestilential fevers, their causes, differences, and cures. Includes discussion of rabies, “puerperal” fever, and inflammatory fevers of all parts of the body, including the brain and stomach. Of particular interest for the author’s defense of the thesis that pestilence was sometimes produced by the stars without any contributory inferior causes, a not uncommon view in the 16th century medical community. Salius Diversus studied under the Naples physician Antonio Donato d’Altomare, an important Galenist. The final 102 pages of the text are devoted to an important commentary on Altomare’s De Medendis Humani Corporis Malis, Ars Medica. --Wellcome 1809. Durling 4047. Bird 2120. Parkinson & Lumb 686. SURVEY OF EARLY 17TH CENTURY SURGERY199. sennert, dAniel. Institutionum Medicinae Libri V. [32], 1324, [40] pp. Complete with the engraved title, portrait, and folding plate, and with a large printer’s device on the colophon page. (Thick 4to), disbound. Second Edition.

Wittenberg: Zachariam Schurerum, [1620]

The engraved title depicts in separate panels a doctor’s office, a sickroom, a pharmacy, a physician with alchemical apparatus, and an anatomical figure. The colophon and portrait are by Merian, and the folding engraved plate contains some 50 figures of chemical and alchemical apparatus. Sennert is remembered as the first to introduce chemistry into the medical curriculum. The section on surgery, which has been called the best survey of the field at the time, first appeared in this second edition. All editions of this work, which was first published in 1611, are considered rare. This edition not in Wellcome nor Krivatsy. OCLC locates just two copies, at Minnesota and Marquette Browned throughout, some early underlining and notations scattered within, scattered paper/tape repairs to edges of many leaves, tape repairs to closed tears on verso of folding plate, a bit of worming and reinforced gutter edge of title page; a good copy of a very scarce edition of this important work.

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1859

“Serres did research into the development of the bones and teeth in normal and abnormal fetuses and studied the comparative anatomy of a number of vertebrate organs. He noted that many organs start from a number of isolated centers, which eventually unite to form a single adult organ-an observation that he regarded as a complete confirmation of epigenesis. In his general approach to the nature of life and the harmony between the organs he was clearly influenced by Cuvier, who mentioned Serre’s work with admiration. Serre’s theoretical position was more closely akin to that of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, who regarded Serres as his collaborator.” -DSB, XII, 315-16. Spine and extremities lightly rubbed, a few nicks and small marks to spine; edges of text block lightly foxed; plates lightly foxed and each with a tiny stub tear; very good.

The earliest of the booklets, Lesseps’ letter to the London Times in 1855, dates from the beginning of his efforts. Actual ground was broken on 1859, and construction lasted for ten years. Fifteen of the booklets date from the period of construction, as engineering, political, social and economic challenges were successfully, if not easily, dealt with. Most with rubberstamps of the Franklin Institute Library, some other markings, several with labels affixed, a few with pencil ownership signatures of Prof. J.E. Nourse, U.S.N. Chipping to may of the wrappers, other wear; overall very good.

“Trousseau, great clinician of the Hôtel-Dieu, made important advances in the treatment of diphtheria, typhoid, scarlet fever and other conditions. In his book he emphasized the value of bedside observation. He supported the doctrine of the specific nature of disease and realized the significance of Pasteur’s work on fermentation. On pp. 112-14 Trousseau describes the phenomenon in tetany which now bears his name. This is produced by pressure upon the arm sufficient to stop the circulation; the result is a sudden contraction of the fingers and hand into the so-called ‘obstetrical position’.”--Garrison-Morton 2221 & 4830. Heirs of Hippocrates 1635. Bumps, rubs and chips to edges of boards; original free endpapers pasted to new free endpapers; foxed lightly throughout; very good.

Schloss-Hotel, Heidelberg, [Germany]: June 3, [1878]

Mark Twain is sojourning in Heidelberg for several months, amusing himself and earning some money from lecturing - his experiences there were recounted in A Tramp Abroad, published in 1880. Desirous of some copies of his own books, perhaps to use in preparing his lectures, he writes to his English publisher: “My Dear Mr. Chatto: Won’t you please send me a paper-covered copy of ‘Innocents Abroad’ & ‘Roughing It’ - & oblige Yours Faithfully, Samuel L. Clemens. Love to Conway.” A few edge chips, very good.

[New York]: The Library of Facetious Lore, [1927]

Attributed to Ming Dynasty historian Feng-Chow Wang. “It is accepted belief that Wang Feng-Chow wrote the manuscript as an instrument for revenging the death of his Illustrious Father, which was said to have been caused by the treachery of the Prime Minister’s son, the younger Yen. The historian know of Yen’s addiction to facetious tales, and his avid love for them. He was also aware of Yen’s incurable habit of moistening his fingers while turning the pages of a manuscript. Wang Feng-Chwo deliberately composed a series of facetious episodes which would delight the depraved taste of the younger Yen. The pages of the manuscript he saturated with a deadly poison and sent it to his father’s assassin.” Spine sunned, light edge wear, short crack to front hinge; very good.

ARCHIVE OF LETTERS FROM ILLINOIS FRONTIER WRITTEN BY NATHANIEL WYETH’S BROTHER

223. Wyeth, JAcoB, Jr. Archive of the American physician who accompanied his brother Nathaniel’s 1832 expedition to the Oregon country. Collection of 22 Autograph Letters Signed (approximately 60 handwritten pages + integral stampless address leaves); 20 by Jacob Wyeth from Galena, Illinois, to his brother Charles in Baltimore, between January 5, 1833 and May 8, 1835; one from Nathaniel Wyeth in St.Louis to Charles Wyeth, March 1834; and the draft of a letter from Charles to Jacob in May 1834.

Galena, IL, etc.: 1833-1835

Important archive of letters written by the brother of explorer/entrepreneur Nathaniel Wyeth, who started out with the latter’s expedition to Oregon in 1832, only to abandon his brother’s party after they survived a battle with the Indians in the wilds of present-day Wyoming, and trek back to Missouri. After making his way via New Orleans to Baltimore, where his brother Charles, a merchant, lived, he almost immediately set out for the frontier once again, to practice medicine in the Mississippi River town of Galena, Illinois, in a still undeveloped mining region which had been little more than a trading post when the first steamboat had called there in the 1820s. These letters chronicle the two and a half years of Dr. Wyeth’s life, from his arrival in Galena, six months after abandoning his brother’s expedition. During these years, he struggled – with a loan from Charles - to establish a medical practice in a frontier town close to the future city of Dubuque and the southern border of what would be the Wisconsin Territory. Also during this time, he married the step-daughter of John Scott, former U.S. Senator from Mis-souri and niece of George W. Jones, future U.S. Senator from Iowa, but despite these illustrious relations, Dr. Wyeth could barely make ends meet. He blamed his barebones existence on his family - his parents, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and three brothers – Nathaniel, Charles and Leonard. They, in turn, had not forgotten how, as the only brother to be given an expensive college education, he had wasted his years at Harvard (his father’s alma mater) by the “dissipa-tion” of alcoholism and consorting with “lewd women”, nor how he had “deserted” Nathaniel in the mountains of the wild West. (Charles outlined this unhappy history in the draft of one acrimonious letter to Jacob, included in this archive, which he probably never sent). Jacob’s let-ters record in detail how difficult he found it to make a living as a medical practitioner, especially after he proposed marrying a young woman of great social stature but little wealth. When his

Page 62

medical practice foundered, he dreamed of adding an apothecary’s shop and dental practice to his “business” – more costly ventures which Charles warned him against, and was unwilling to finance. All this took place at the very time that Nathaniel reached the Pacific coast on his first expedition and then set out on his second – ventures that never generated the enormous profits for which he and his family had hoped, but gained Nathaniel the awed respect of his parents and brothers – not including Jacob, who complained that Nathaniel had slandered him by telling tales of the Doctor’s wasted youth to his fiancee’s illustrious relations. Jacob, in fact, felt that he had been wronged by all his family – complaints he continually sets forth in these letters, to-gether with a lame defense of his earlier behavior and repeated promises to Charles that he had turned over a new leaf. There are also inadvertent hints of Jacob’s deeper psychological prob-lems, particularly intriguing because Nathaniel himself sometimes complained of suffering from similar fits of the depression which both brothers called “the Blue Devils”. A few brief excerpts from the letters follow: 1/5/33, 3pp.: I reached this place 29th inst. after one week’s delay in St. Lewis, the Mississippi being full of ice above that place. The boats had ceased running by reason of which it became necessary to seek a passage in the Mail Stage, which leaves but once a week for this place. My medicines are behind in care of Mr. John-son who will forward them by the earliest opportunity…He as well as the gentlemen of this place hold out great encouragement to my settle-ment in this place. There are at present 3 physicians be-side myself. * 6/27/33, 3pp.: Mr. Sublette has called on you, no doubt you were pleased with him. He has misinformed you uninten-tionally about my situation [when return-ing from the overland expe-dition]. When I left him, in two days after parting, I positively had no meat and was informed he had none to spare and from motives of delicacy did not ask him for any. No doubt he would have supplied me, but I preferred to take my chances for he had been very kind to me. He was right however when he said I eat like the devil, there is no mistake in that. I joined the temperance society soon after I arrived finding that most of the respected people advised it… Mr. Sublette has again gone out toward towards the mountains. Under such arrangements that he cannot fail of amassing immense profits if he escapes with life, but unless

he retires shortly I entertain no doubt he will eventually perish like all others who have pursued that dangerous occupation too long. I see Capt. Vandenburgh has met his fate in the mountains. I left him well in the rendezvous, as likely to live as anyone there. He was brave to extreme. * 9/12/33, 3pp.: It was with great pleasure that a letter came to my hands advising of the present safety and speedy return of our Brother, but I confess a doubt never entered my mind that such would be the event…My future prospects are more flattering than they have ever been at any preceding period. Since I wrote to Father, my earnings have increased to over 1,400 Dolls… You must be aware that under the circumstances in which I was placed $100 would go but a little way towards establishing me. Everything is so very dear in this place. My office is a build-ing by itself and it was to be entirely furnished and my horse cost me eighty Dollars, Franklin stove, thirty, Bedstead sixteen besides bedding… COMPLETE LISTING OF THE LETTERS, WITH EXTENSIVE EXCERPTS AND ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY, AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Generally in fine condition.

Books can appear at auction as quickly as 30 days and generally not more than 90 days following consignment. Commissions vary between 10% and 15%, depending on the selling price of an item. These commissions encompass all related costs including insurance, storage, cataloguing, illustrations, etc., except shipping. Payment is sent within 20 banking days of an auction.
