Pinkard wins quilt Clara J. Pinkard of White Stone won the “America the Beautiful” quilt raffle October 18 at the Northumberland County Republican Committee Oyster Roast at Cowarts Seafood in Lottsburg. Diane Harper recently presented the quilt to Pinkard at the Lancaster Country Treasurer’s Office. The quilt was made by Martha Mathieu. Pinkard bought the ticket at Tri-Star Supermarket. The Kilmarnock Garden Club hosted 121 attendees at a recent fund raising event.

Club members and guests were treated to a delicious buffet lunch, complete with crab and cheese bites, chicken salad, mini quiches, brown-ies, banana bread, mini cheese cakes and fresh fruit before enjoying a very informative and creative program, said Genny Chase.

Guest presenter Edwin Little impressed the gathering with his creativity by making over twenty different floral designs, ranging from traditional to con-temporary, she said.

Little began his program by creating several fall arrange-ments using wheat, Osage oranges, beauty berries, mag-nolia pods, hydrangea, Austra-lian pine, bittersweet, and rose hips in a variety of styles, said Chase. He also interspersed a few garden club stories and added a little history about Smithfield, his hometown.

Little continued his program with several design ideas for Christmas, ranging from a cen-terpiece for Christmas dinner to a simple design which could be given as a gift or placed on a

mantle, said Chase. The “Lunch with Edwin”

event is the Kilmarnock Garden Club’s only means to fund the many community projects it sponsors each year.

Recently the club landscaped a Habitat for Humanity home; and awarded a $500 college scholarship to a senior in Lan-caster High School, The club members decorate the outside of the Rappahannock General Hospital during Christmas each year.

The club also offered a “Variety Table” of items for sale including books on gar-dening, cook books and land-scaping, magnolia wreaths, daffodil bulbs, iris, jams, jel-lies and gardening gloves.

The club thanked all who purchased tickets and attended the event. The club also thanked Tri-Star Super-market, The Kilmarnock Inn, Specials on Main Street, The Tides Inn - Golden Eagle Golf Course, Hills Quarter - King Carter Golf Course, Town Bistro, Swanks, Curves and The Wyndham Virginia Cross-ings Resort in Glen Allen for donating items to help with this endeavor.

The Northumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross urges families to be cau-tious when using space heaters and other heating sources and to make a plan in case of a home fire, according to publicity chairman Joan Kroll. Heating sources are the leading cause of winter fires and increase during the late fall and winter months.

Space heaters, fireplaces and wood and coal stoves can pose fire hazards, said Kroll. To pre-vent such fires, the Red Cross recommends keeping all poten-tial fuel sources like newspa-pers, matches, bedding and clothing, at least three feet away from sources such as fireplaces and wood stoves. Portable heat-ers and fireplaces should never be left unattended.

Red Cross chapter issues pointersregarding the use of space heaters

Residents should check smoke alarms once a month; batteries should be replaced once a year, said Kroll.

Among other tips, Kroll notes, never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. Turn off por-table space heaters upon leaving the room or going to sleep. Have wood and coal stoves, fireplaces and chimneys professionally inspected annually and cleaned if necessary. Those who use space heaters should place them on a level, hard and nonflammable surface such as ceramic tile, not on rugs, carpets or near bedding or drapes.

Home fires are America’s big-gest disaster threat, said Kroll. Unlike natural disasters, most home fires can be prevented, she said.
