Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Throughout our media production we have purposely embedded a variety of media forms
and conventions that are relevant to the genre of our opening sequence; Thriller. During the
planning of our production, as a group we had discussed how we wanted to include typical
conventions of a thriller movie, however make it less traditional, helping us gain more
attention from our audience by the sequence being less predictable.
The Title ‘THE CHALLENGE’
The title of our film was located at the end of the whole sequence, we had decided to this as
the audience would be able to have a feel of what the movie is about, and then be able to
relate to why the title is what it is. The title was a group decision, the name was chosen
after we had grasped the main aspect of the film; which was the challenge being set by the
anonymous caller. This is quite unusual for a thriller genre movie, as the titles are normally
positioned at the beginning of the film rather than the end of the opening sequence, which
is what we aimed for; having a less traditional thriller film.

A title is a one of the main features of a film, the fact that the audience would judge
whether the film is worth watching is dependent on the title itself. As a group we had
decided that we wanted our title to stand out and deliver what the movie was about in two
words to our audience, as you can see we had decided to name our movie ‘THE CHALLENGE’
we had chosen this title as the main narrative is that the main character Jake is going to be
set a variety of challenges, and within our scene one is going to be delivered to him via a
phone call. The title is located at the end of the scene which would signify to the audience
that more challenges are to come, as it would be unusual for a film to be two minutes long.
‘THE CHALLENGE’ is in capitals to signify that the challenge is going to have an impact on
scenes that occur in the film itself; this would also make the audience think that there are
going to be a variety of challenges set, maybe to the character in the sequences or other
characters are to come further on in the movie. The size of our title was not that large incomparison to other titles from our inspiration the movie ‘SAW’, we had done this so that
our titles would be different from other thriller/horror films. Another factor we had was to
make our titles bold to make them stand out at the end; this is so that the audience is able
to recognize the title if they were to see it again. To find the right font type for our film we
had to go through many different trials, at first we were going for more conventional fonts
such as ‘BankGothic Md BT’, however we had decided that ‘BlairMdITC TT’ would suit our
production and our groups aim of not being too conventional or typical when it comes to
our genre. When it had come to deciding what colour our title should be we had decided
that it should be white as we did not want to give away too much to our audience leavingthem to their own devices, to think what is going to come next. On the other hand we did
get the idea of the colouring from the movie ‘SAW’,
all the movies have the title with a neutral colour on a
black background, we had chosen to do this as our
movie was solely based on the movies from the ‘SAW’
franchise, as our character was to par take in a
marathon of gruesome challenges that could lead to
death.
Setting and location
At the beginning of our planning of our production we had decided to film our productions
in Claybury Forest, however realised that it would be easier and more convenient for
ourselves if we film inside school. As we wanted to capture typical conventions of a horror
and thriller film we decided to use the school workshop as it was dark and had an
abandoned look to it; the protagonist was kidnapped and placed into an abandoned
workshop by the antagonist who is not featured in the film. The fact that it was a workshop
followed the conventions of a real media production for instance ‘SAW’, the use of the

inspiration helped us choose what props were to be seen within the set and which props
were to be put aside.
The setting of our production connotes many different conventions of a thriller and horror
movie. The fact that the location is away from civilisation suggests that the antagonist is
psychotic, or an evil character as they know what they are doing, also the fact that no one
else is around suggests to the audience is the antagonist with the protagonist or not? The
abandoned workshop also helps build up the tension for the audience as they are waiting
for something to approach the protagonist, the fact that the clock within the location is
showing that it is midnight also adds to the tension of the scenes as the time is typical in
thriller and horror films as these are the times were killers or murderers are around or are
portrayed within movies themselves.
Camerawork and editing
As the sound person I had worked closely alongside the editor and the cameraman,
therefore a lot of ideas were shared between each of us for our particular roles, after the
ideas were discussed between us we would then feedback to the director and then decide
what ideas are going to be used. As a group we had decided that we wanted a variety of
shots within our production, as we would then have a lot more shots to work with whilst
editing.
As a group we had chosen the maximum duration of a shot to be three seconds and no
longer, most of the shots followed the 3 second limit however there were a few shots that
just ran over, we had chosen to do this as the audience would not be seeing the same shot
over and over again leading them to be more interested in what is happening within the
scenes, this would also help the group with portraying mise-en-scene throughout the
production. We did follow the conventions of a thriller and horror genre when it come to
our camerawork as our work consisted of many close ups and extreme close ups portraying
the protagonists facial expressions giving the audience a feel of what the character is going

through at specific moments in time; we had chosen to use close ups when a scene was
becoming more intense or when the tension was building up. Other typical thriller
convention shots present within our production include P.O.V shots which shows the
position of the protagonist when he is analysing his surroundings, we chose to use this
specific shot to make the audience aware of where the character is as the other shotsconsists of the protagonist only not the location of where he is. Another shot that was used
was an establishing shot at the beginning of the scene showing where the protagonist was
and how he has been positioned, we chose to use this shot as it would help the audience
understand why the character is bleeding or they would just think that he has harmed
himself or the cuts have come out of thin air.
Whilst working alongside the editor, we had made sure that each shot would complement
the other and that we had never missed out a scene, as if we did the audience would
become confused how certain things had happened e.g. the protagonist ‘Jake’ getting up topicking up the phone, we had made sure that there was a sense of continuity throughout
the production. We had used a variety of different transitions such as fades which made the
change from shot to shot seem much smoother and better looking.
Costume and props
The protagonist ‘Jake’ is shown wearing a tattered t shirt, black shorts which have been
ripped and socks that are fairly dirty; the items of clothing are usually associated with night
clothing which signifies that ‘Jake’ has been to bed and has been kidnapped and taken to an
abandoned warehouse.
The white t shirt signifies the protagonists ‘Jake’ vulnerability within the sequence, this is
then complimented by the fact that he has been beaten and has been set a challenge by an
unknown antagonist. The black shorts portrays death and danger, the fact that further on in
the scene ‘Jake’ has been told that he has a capsule in his penis suggests that he is in danger
that could result in his death.

The props that have been placed purposely beside the protagonist ‘Jake’ and have been put
there by the antagonist; they consist of a welcome mat that signifies that the antagonist
finds what he is doing humorous, an X-ray of a penis with a marker pointing out a specific
point where the capsule is located, hammer and a chisel which is going to be used by ‘Jake’
to remove the capsule or else he is going to die or lose his penis.
How characters are introduced
There is only one character present throughout the production. The protagonist ‘Jake’ is
introduced first as the sequence begins. He is laying unconscious with his hand locked withina vice; this was done purposely to show that the antagonist has control over the protagonist
portraying ‘Jake’ as vulnerable. The fact that the protagonist is bleeding heavily connotes to
the audience that the production is a horror/thriller due to the make – up used on the
character. The antagonist is never shown within the production however the hand of him is
and so is the voice, however it has been altered therefore ‘Jake’ cannot recall who voice it is
is.

Genre and how the opening scene suggests it
Throughout our production there are many typical thriller and horror conventions
portrayed, we had made sure that they were apparent by watching a variety of professional
media productions and mirroring the conventions within them for example the use of
diegetic sound of a heartbeat and heavy breathing, also there was apparent non diegetic
sound throughout the production to add tension to all scenes. By the use of the different
sounds it suggests that the production was of a thriller and horror genre. The use of
different shots and camera movements also help convey the thriller and horror genre, as
the use of zooms and pan within different scenes signify the intense moments within the
production. The repetitive use of close ups and extreme close ups also add to the emphasis
of the feeling of the protagonist; these two shots are very common within thriller and
horror productions which also suggests that the genre is of thriller and horror.
Story and how the opening sets it up
The production begins with the protagonist ‘Jake’ being locked in a vice which suggests to
the audience that he is vulnerable and that someone has done this to him as he is battered
and bruised; this also conveys to audience that the film is going to be a horror or thriller.
The story then goes onto showing all of ‘Jake’ injuries which then makes the audience
curious about what has happened, leading to ‘Jake’ freeing himself from the vice and
analysing his surroundings; the audience know that he is analysing his surrounding through
the use of a P.O.V shot, after this shot ‘Jake’ then receives a phone call by the antagonist
explaining his challenge which makes the audience; especially the male audience wince dueto the fact that the challenge is to harm his genital area to help himself inflict minimum pain
or else his penis would just blow up.
