Based on standardized installation cutouts we have separated the exterior insert from the interior latching mechanism. The result is a modular system, that allows for a variety of possible combinations. The Latches can be used in RH and LH applications.

Concial square inserts according to RIC/UIC

The International Union of Railways (UIC), founded in 1922 is a worldwide organisation with presently 194 registered members.The UIC functions as an acting Committee of a State Treaty established in 1886. It defines and sets standards for railway carriages for the cross-border railway traffic.

In 1922 several European railway companies established an agreement with the same aim. The presently 27 participating European railway companies (except Great Britain, Ireland and Finland) are also being taken care of by the UIC since 1982.

As adviced by the UIC, the entry of all locks and latches must have a diameter of at least 18mm.

The basics of the conical operating insert is shown below.

Materials for our hardware - 1 -Zinc Die, Polyamide, Steel and Stainless Steel

GDZn Zinc Die CastThe refined zinc alloy we are using for zinc die casting has the description

ZL 0410 (ZL = zinc alloy)This alloy is used less and less in hardware for railway equipment due to strength durability reasons.In addition to the tensile strength of 210 N/mm² the endurance strength, hardness and flow properties are more unfavourable compared to materials made out of steel. The ultimate strain, that is also lower, affects the safety against overloading. Although, compared to processing it is less expensive. The clean surface can be chrome plated, matt or glossy, as well as black or colored E-coated. We are using the alloy ZL 0410 for swinghandles and partially for quarter-turn housings. For inserts we always recommend steel.

Polyamide PA 6 and PA 6 GF (Glass Fiber)Polyamide PA 6 and PA 6 GF are used in different qualities. By adding glass fiber the rigidity, hardness and strength are increased. An example for high-quality material for functioning parts is

" Durethan® " (registered trademark by BAYER)Durethan is self-extinguishing and UL94 rated. Higher glass fiber content enables better ratings. With the polyamide the thermal load has to be considered. Due to smoke emissions during a fire, parts with a weight of 50 grams or more are subject to DIN 5510 - preventive fire protection in rail cars.

Band EN 10111 - DD1For quarter-turn housings, inserts and other turned and milled parts, we are using cold-drawn free cutting steel (this is a special type of steel) quality description

The above-mentioned stainless steels are corrosion-resistant. These materials are not brittle because they contain very little carbon. Therefore, they remain ductile and elastic, but hardening is not possible.The stainless steel 1.4404/AISI 316L is marked "L" for "low carbon" content. This stainless steel alloy consists of only 0.03 % carbon (compared to 1.4401/AISI 316 with 0.07 % carbon).The stainless steel 1.4571/AISI 316Ti is an exception. Due to its high Titan it is the most corrosion-resistant among the above-mentioned materials.

Hardened stainless steels are more wear-resistant on the surface and the tensile strength is significantly increased.Due to the higher carbon, but smaller nickel content hardened stainless steel is less corrosion-resistant.

Materials and their use for railway vehicle manufacturing

Plywood (Multiplex): 10 - 18mm, is used for interior construction and reinforcement.Particle board / chip board: 10 - 18mm, is used in secondary areas that are not visible.Solid wood: 10 - 18mm, is used in visible areas for decorative reasons.

Aluminium Sandwich, up to 60mm, is used for flooring, and also for partitions. Thick walls are being constructed sound-absorbent with this material.

Aluminium boned, honeycomb plated, 3 - 4mm, are used in ceiling areas for lining. The lining is also called Vouten (it´s the transition from ceiling to wall lining).

GRP, glass-fiber reinforced plastic, 3.5 - 10mm, is used whenever special forms for thin materials are required.

Stainless steel, 1 - 2mm, is used for interior construction, e.g. in lining of cabinet doors, usually in combination with massive wood or plywood.

ESG, toughened safety glass (single panel), 3 - 8mm, is used among other applications in partitions.

Aluminium-, Steel and Stainless Steel Sheets, 1 - 4mm for electrical cabinets as well as cases and housings for electrical power supply and air conditioning.
